Walking the dog.

Just taken the dogs for a walk in the lovely morning sunshine and got to thinking about possible outcome at Newcastle and wondering about what Ashley is up to. Bearing in mind that I think he is a rational businessman not some petty thieving antichrist out to make Geordies miserable). Here’s what I came up with.

Out for a walk!
Out for a walk!

Obviously management realise that cheaper players live in continental Europe, therefore they choose a coach like De Boer, Tuchel, etc who has experience with such players and can implement a whole-of-club playing style. They also want somebody who can turn Newcastle into something akin to an Ajax style academy. The relationship with coach and DoF works as planned (ie they decide mutually on the type of player they want.), They bring on youth players, and sell for great profits to finance new purples.

[Now for the bit where everybody groans]

Let’s suppose that Ashley is being very canny. He’s taken a few risks (some worked, some didn’t) but he now has the club stable in the mid-upper half of the table but moving into profit and able to finance itself. The 5year plan has finally come to fruition, a few years later than projected. The coach has kept the desired stability within the required parameters (what some call lack of ambition).

It’s now time to embark on the next 5 year plan – moving to the new level, expansion into new markets, raising the club brand (and SD’s with it). It’s a couple of seasons on from the coach appointment. Almost every team in the PL has a vast debt, but Newcastle are rolling in tv profits.

They are cashed up and almost completely immune to any changes in the world economy. His investment is secure and ready to pounce when the opportunity arises.

This to me seems a reasonably rational scenario. Probably not right (and let me hastily add that I’m neither yaying or naying at it here), but it’s an alternative way of looking at what’s gone on, rather than the blind accusations of greedy, filthy, pig-dog, ambitonless, rip-off asset-stripping piece of ****.

Unfortunately for fans, it’s a more of the same for a few years.. I doubt whether we are factored into the long-term plan.

Just thought I’d share that little thought with you.

  1. Stu, Are you honestly saying Palace are a bigger, better club than us 😯

Re , Colo & Krul not sure mate, two seasons back I think 😕 as for Sissoko, maybe he don’t want an extension, after all his hearts with Arsenal isn’t it ?

  2. Well this is the Toon after all so I see people have latched into the most cynical explanations. The far more likely scenario is that their top choices aren’t available until the summer. So I assume people would prefer the club hire a lower quality manager now that is only marginally better than Carver? That makes no sense to me

  3. Stu, Indeed they are, so what?, give it time and they will go on a bad run, let’s see how much they rate him then.

  4. @71 “Fact is we need strengthening in two vital areas, until that’s addressed it’s gonna be a problem for anybody.”
That is exactly what some of us were saying while others were pointing the finger at Pardew… 😆

  5. With regards to players signing extensions, first they have to want to, you can’t force a player to stay longer if their heart is set on say Arsenal, Chelsea or PSG as in the case of Debs, Ba, and Cabaye, Christ alive Cabs even went on strike to force a move 🙄 If we showed a modicum of ambition things might be different .

  6. Solano, he didn’t have the injury to Saylor or the absent Mbiwa when he persisted with Willo though . Also knowing our weakness in defence played us on the defensive for 70 mins a game and tried to snatch it in the last 15/20 mins by which time we were usually losing anyway 🙄

  7. Stu, I’m nowt if not balanced 😆 I see the same as you with regards to jabba and his mindset, but I do not share your love of Percy I’m afraid.

  8. Kim – his record speaks for itself though.
Obviously capable of utterly horrific runs but it still reads –
    10/11 – mid-table with no striker
11/12 – 5th with Williamson forced to play all season.
12/13 – relegation battle, squad couldn’t handle Europa (see Everton this season)
13/14 – mid table, having been in the hunt for CL @ Xmas
A decent bit of investment over the years could have seen our average manager do slightly better.
Now we are lumbered with a below average manager and a below average squad. Very worried that only means one thing 😥

  9. The worst thing about Pardew’s reign was when the chips were down, they were DOWN. Soft-underbelly on losing streaks and within games we were liable to just collapse.
Hopefully that can be something Carver can fix!

  10. Interesting read ST. I know I’m in the minority but I think having a director of football making the final decisions on personnel is the way to go. No way do managers have enough time to do proper evaluations, due diligence and scouting of players. Plus many are self interested to make decisions for the present rather than what might be in the I terest of a club long term.

It strikes me that the manager with total authority is pretty much unique to the Premeir League. It’s obviously much different in Continental football as well as in North American sports

  11. are we better off without Percy.?

In the long run, hopefully. lets see who we get in the summer.

      (Quote)

  12. Solano, Yep with more resources he may well of done better, but the losing streaks were really a worry, he seemed totally lost/stumped for a plan b at times. I really hope Carver can get a good few points for us and him.

  13. The Toon v Palace game will be mighty interesting now, question is who will the Percy lovers back on the day 😆 Their love for the Toon verses their overwhelming desire to say “told you so” will nigh on kill em.

  14. Hope we can close on Dele Alli. Can we also pay extra money and cancell Lascelles loan deal now?? If we dont want a new CB, lets bring him back and put Curtis Good and Remie Streete in the mix. At this point with de Jong back, this is our strongest line up:

    —————————Krul————————-
    -Janmaat-Coloccini-Good/Lascelles-Santon-
    ——————-Abeid—Colback——————
    ————————Sissoko———————-
    ——Ayoze Perez—————-Sammeoi——
    ————————-de Jong——————–

  15. Ready to pounce when the opportunity arises Brisvegas mate? Ready to pounce on what? The next cheap head coach? And what will the price be in terms of our final place in the standings this season? Do you fancy 14th? We are a poorly organized club with no football plan going forward. The money means nothing if it’s not spent properly on the club and that is not going to happen under Ashley.

      (Quote)

  16. Don’t get carried away Cholo @94. Streete and Good are untested at the Prem level. We need a good CB as soon as possible before Colo is finished. Willo already is finished. We’re hopeless at the back and have been for ages. We have a -9 goal difference for a reason mate.

  17. Wake up and smell the coffee mates. It’s Carver and the bottom half of the table for this season. Exciting times ahead. 🙄

  18. So if we end up getting relegated, will the Parsnip haters get the blame for that too??

      (Quote)

  19. Its not the parsnip haters that couldn’t find a new manager.
Its not the parsnip haters that don’t have a footballing plan for the club.
Its not the parsnip haters that wont spend the many millions in the bank to strengthen the team.
The senior management of the club is a joke.
    Reap what you sow *******

  20. This isn’t down to hating or defending Percy as BB says. It doesn’t matter a fig that Pardew is gone. He is a poor to average manager at best. What matters is we’re still stuck with a pillock as owner. A pillock with a lot of money and no football plan whatsoever. That’s why we bounce around all over the table. And that’s what we’ll continue to do with Ashley. And almost all of the bouncing will be in the bottom half.

      (Quote)

  21. BB – Its the Pardew haters who couldn’t understand that removing Pardew would lead to this. Anyone with half a brain knew the club would do the easiest option to them and that’s Carver.

G2 – You are correct, there is absolutely no football plan, just a business plan and they do not always go hand in hand.

      (Quote)

  22. I see the Pardew haters are blaming everyone but themselves. As predictable as the regime. 🙄

    YCMIU 🙄

      (Quote)

  23. Stuart – the club may have taken the easy option in appointing JC, but at what cost ?
The fat **** has taken on another gamble, with no opt out if it all goes pear shaped.
Exceedingly foolish high risk ‘management’. ( I use the term lightly 👿 )
Would he take such risks with his own baby **** Dirt ❓ Of course not.
The last thing I want to see is relegation, but if that should happen, I don’t think I would care less. In fact I would probably have a very good laugh.

      (Quote)

  24. Troy – There is nothing to blame the Pardew haters for.
He left of his own free will, with the blessing of the owner.
What is the point of drifting along aimlessly in the premier league anyway.
Its of no benefit to the club or the fans. Totally pointless existence.
Perhaps you are happy to follow that model for the foreseeable future with Percy at the helm. Good for you. Wooo Hooo. Whatever.

  25. Your best bet is to hope and pray Carver does a better job than Parsnip.
Wouldn’t want to upset your obvious apathy would we.

      (Quote)

  26. Well all said and done Carver untill the end of the season is what we knew would happen. Garde will be installed in the summer I think , with 1 of his own choice of assistant and the rest of his backroom staff is already at the club.Carver , stone and Beardsly will be kept on and Woodman will join Pards at Palace in the summer leaving us needing a new goalkeeping coach. I just hope Carver gives a few of the young lads game time between now and the end of the season

  27. The funny thing is right, 52k fans turn up to supposedly support the team (not the regime) -cough- 😳
Well I was at the match last week v saints, and there was a distinct lack of support from 3/4 of the home fans. Infact I have NEVER known it to be as quiet as that ever.
Hats off to the Lads in the Strawberry corner, because they were the only ones making any noise whatsoever.
    Embarrassing.

      (Quote)

  28. Not bothered a jot about Woodman.
Firstly he is grossly over weight, and secondly, and more importantly he has made no improvement to the goalkeepers we have anyway.
After all these years, Krul still cant kick straight and has failed to push on and fulfil his potential as a number 1 international GK.
    NEXT.

  29. I very much would like to know why Peter Beardsley hasn’t bothered to complete the qualifications for his pro licence.
Obviously happy enough with his lot I guess, with no interest in being a ‘head coach’ .

      (Quote)

  30. BB @ 111
I’m not particularly bothered about the possibility of losing Woodman the goalkeeper coach.
I’m more concerned about losing Woodman the goalkeeper.
I suspect that Pardew wants Woodman Snr at Crystal Palace so Woodman Jnr goes with him.

      (Quote)

  31. I think the Carver appointment is ok as long as there is truly someone decent waiting in the wings to take over come the end of season. It’s sensible to keep some sort of continuity. Given that there was no guarantee that Pardew would do any better than Carver, it’s pretty much ‘as you were’ until later.

I only deal in facts. You brought all this on by your hatred. No wonder he left. You demanded it for years so now you’ve got it. Deal with the consequences of your actions and take responsibility.

  33. The goalkeeper position could soon get interesting.
After his recent performances will Alnwick be offered an extension to his contract which ends in June ?.
With Darlow coming in from July we will have him, Krul and Elliott vying for the number 1 position. None of them will be happy to be third choice.
Wonder which one will head for the exit.
Elliott enters the final year of his contract in July and his sell on value will be around £2m.
Krul has a contract to June 2017 and his sell on value will be around £10m.
Anyone think Ashley will cash in on Krul ?

  34. If Carver gets us relegated will he get the chance to get us relegated from the Championship as well? Hard decisions ahead for Ashley.

  35. Bris – If the past has taught us anything it’s that there won’t be someone decent waiting in the wings.

  36. i see jabba has loaned rangers 10 mill.lets hope he is nearing the end game with us,we can only hope.

wow theres some on here going on like they give 100% backing to percy from the moment he walked in the door. 🙄

  37. I see 2 or 3 journo’s are saying we are waiting for Steve Mclaren in the summer. That makes more sense to me than De Boer. Wouldn’t mind too much if it was Mclaren but it’s far from certain he would leave Derby if they got promoted. I genuinely think he would have more money to spend at Derby than NUFC and he would have more control there, especially after getting them promoted. If he doesn’t get them promoted then it becomes a lot easier.

      (Quote)

  38. Terry, he wants us both imo, he won’t leave us for them and I reckon if he could get his fat hands on more ailing clubs he would .

      (Quote)

  39. Bris – It’s not as you were though, is it? Our dislike of Pardew can’t hide the fact he IS a better manager than Carver.
I’m really worried for us if we lose to Hull.

  40. Solano, maybe he is, maybe he isn’t. I haven’t seen enough of Newcastle under Carver. I’ll make that assessment in a few games time.

  41. Kim

Why do you believe Pards IS a better manager than Carver?

How does anyone know? Give the bloke a chance.

He’s coached them for years and under many managers. He’s now got an opportunity to demonstrate what he’s learnt from those managers.

He might get more respect from the players than Pards. He might play better football which is what you’ve demanded and said Pardew never produced. He might be more tactically aware.

He might be none of those as well, but to state today, after 3 games that Pardew IS a better manager (coach) than him is writing him off before he’s had a chance.

    Give the bloke a break.

  42. Everything, absolutely everything about NUFC these days is depressing. Hard to find words to describe it.
Rangers fans will soon find out what I mean. Palace too when one of Pardew’s good runs stop and they crash into the Championship.

  46. Troy why are you ignoring Kim and why wont you back Carver until the summer? His our caretaker so surely you want him to do the best that he can ?

I remember reading it, phone crashing and then went on this thread again. Clearly never said by you. 😉

For the record, I don’t have to deal with any consequences. Ashley has that privilege. It’s really not my problem what happens under Carver.
I think I might really enjoy the 2nd half of this season in some kind of perverse way.
