Press’n our buttons

Just a quick post to keep things ticking over. I guess most of the conversations on here at the moment revolves around what the press has to speculate about on any given day. So please feel free to join in the melee and see what comes out of it once things become a little clearer (We actually sign someone)

  1. Who said its all down to the free advertising? I certainly didn’t so don’t be embarrassed for me. Use your energy to go and learn to read.

Simple fact is that the growth overseas is in a big part down to the exposure they get from being associated with NUFC. Think about it; Sports Direct opened in New Zealand and the next thing we know we went there on a pre season trip! Incredible!

  2. Eric poor Carver lost his job don’t you feel any sympathy for him ? He saved the club from relegation and guided us to a remarkable 15th place finish. I would love to read your article thanking him for his service 🙂 He did his best with a very **** team and not investing in player’s will only make us even worse.

  3. John was a fan of the club and one of us mate. Mc won’t do any better either. Another yes man.

  4. Firstly, Aussie, that wasn’t a comment from me and he specifically says ‘I bet’ which indicates it’s a guess, not a statement of fact.

  5. I feel sorry for Troy. He must be really heart broken losing Pardew and Carver only to see McClaren take their place.

  6. Stem: I think I have written enough about Carvs and Stoner to get me banned for life on here – I have even bored myself when I look back at a couple of posts 🙂 However, I am not going to judge McClaren the way I did Ugly John. I knew Carvs was a train wreck (and only Troysta couldn’t see it coming) but I will wait and see what Stevie Mac can do. Just give me a couple of new players before NUFC come to Milwaukee. Is that too much to ask?

How on earth is it right that West Ham pay only £15m for a stadium that cost £275m that will increase their competitiveness 100% and they also get to keep all the money from selling their old ground?

    Talk about a stitch up!

conservative guess bud, how much would you say his sports direct has made over the last 8 years, of free advertiseing hes had so far, and the fat twonk thinks the club still own him money.

  17. mmmmmm SD turnover £2.7bn pa to generate net profits of £180m.

    http://citywire.co.uk/wealth_manager/share-prices-and-performance/share-factsheet.aspx?InstrumentID=173641

Here’s an interesting article that suggests costs for anywhere from £1000 to £4000 per board pitchside.
    http://soccerlens.com/football-advertising/11782/

Unfortunately nobody knows what returns you get for every advertising £ spent. However, looking at SJP they would raise by that data maybe £500k per game. Maybe £10m pa.

So apparently MA saves £10m per year on his advertising, but that advertising generates well over £1bn of sales world wide. Which is where the majority of SDs profit comes from.

That’s over £1000 return on every £1 spent. Has to be the best advertising model on the planet. Wonder if it’s valid.

  22. What a miserable bunch of canutes most NUFC writers are these days…focussing on the players we have “ALREADY” missed out on…

Just think of the number of players last summer than fans were complaining about us missing out on and how many actually succeeded! The huge number signed by the likes of Sunderland and Villa yet pretty much every one of them was terrible. Demands of a huge bid for Michu only to see him go on loan and then flop…

Most signings made already were probably in the pipeline for months.

As always, I’ll wait until the transfer window closes to judge our business.

      (Quote)

  23. TAE whilst I agree that had we sold the advertising boards in the conventional manner we may have generated something approaching £80m. I reckon that it would have been a lot less 8 years ago, but nonetheless a significant sum. I don’t for one minute believe that the return from those boards would have generated over a Billion per year in sales to SD. Which is what your majority of his profits coming from the boards argument implies.

  25. Blimey…terrible maths…who on earth thinks that NUFC could just magic up £500k per game simply by replacing the SD advertising??? For chrissakes, look at the advertising revenues of the other clubs around our size, they aren’t that different!

read a piece about 2 or 3 years ago that said the advertising was worth 10 million per season, so hes on the mark with his 10 million per season and prob worth a little bit more now was a couple of years back i read it

  27. My last sentence was “I wonder if it’s Valid” Seems fair. I did not suggest all £2.7m of turnover came from the boards. Your argument was the majority came from it. I’ve been generous and assume only £1bn came from it. Hence The figures. I wonder if other advertisers in the EPL get the same response. £1000 sales per £1 invested. Just seems wonderful if they do.

      (Quote)

  28. TDS the link I quoted shows stoke getting up to £3000 + per board. In order to try and see if TAE made any sense I upped the value of the boards and scaled back the clame of the returns. It still seems fanciful, hence you disbelief.

sports direct made 100 million or so not a billion like you trying to say i said

      (Quote)

  30. They made £180m Profit from a turnover of £2.7bn. In order to make the profit you have to have the turnover. Sales. The boards must generate half the sales to generate half the profit. You can’t have the one without the other.

      (Quote)

  31. If you are suggesting that you meant that £10m worth of board advertising generated £50m in Sales that is far more reasonable, might even be conservative. But that’s not profits.

  32. and were do you get the 1000 pound for every pound of advertising maybe you should get ya pen and paper back out and try again with ya maths

      (Quote)

  33. What advertising though? Look at total advertising revenue for the likes of us, Everton, Villa and Sunderland and it isn’t that different to ours.

The quote on that link is “As a rough guide, Stoke City offer boards from £750 to £3,500”. How many do they have? How many are at £750 and how many at £3,500?

The figure is madness quite frankly.

Advertising might be worth £10m a season but that includes all the other sponsors that we have. It makes no logical business sense for Mike Ashley to miss out on £10m a year in revenue if it’s worth that. If it was, he should get the £10m into a company he owns 100% and spend £10m from a company he doesn’t own 100%.

      (Quote)

  34. I saw an advertising expert on TV a while ago saying that the exposure SD get from NUFC is worth £10m in today’s world. Although I’m sure people on here know more than him.

      (Quote)

  35. If our advertising revenue was significantly below the likes of Everton, Villa and Sunderland, then it would make sense. But it isn’t.

The reason companies pay to sponsor boards isn’t to get the 50,000 fans in the stadium to buy the product, it’s to be seen by the 100s of millions that will watch it all over the world. We’re not going much more or less watched that any of the other clubs in the PL outside of the top 5.

Who cares? His credentials? His angle? I can find an ‘expert’ for virtually everything I want online if I do a search for it.

It’s only worth £10m if another company (or companies) would be prepared to pay £10m for it. So show me a similar sized club who has an extra £10m revenue for advertising compared to us.

      (Quote)

  37. TDS Whether £10 is accurate or not is irrelevant to the discussion. The question is can advertising boards alone be responsible for the sales which generated the majority of SDs profits. My guess would be not.

No. 100% they cannot. That’s an absolutely tiny part of their marketing machine.

      (Quote)

  41. TAE

A bit more, yes. It wouldn’t surprise me that we were the most televised out of the top 6, but that might just be the sliding scale where Everton and us would be ranked 7th and 8th maybe. So maybe we get a few more than other clubs. But we still don’t get European matches and we will still got a lot fewer viewers globally than one of the big 5 clubs. Spurs will get more too, but the other 5 will get WAY more because they’ve all won things recently.

      (Quote)

  42. liverpool are about the same as us in size of ground and fan base i think they get 20 million a year from there advertising

      (Quote)

  43. Most of SD growth is in Europe and Asia. PL football is huge over there and SD adverts will have been seen 6th most out of all the Division. That means it’s seen by hundreds of millions of people! I reckon that’s worth a hell of a lot to Sports Direct. It is worth what someone is prepared to pay for it and if it plays a big part in generating millions and millions of piunds worth of sales it is worht a lot of money to Sports Direct.

      (Quote)

  44. TAE – Liverpool also win cups regularly, have been runners up in the PL recently and are historically the second most successful club in English football.

      (Quote)

  46. im not sure if liverpool on the tv more than us, if its about lvl, is our advertising not worth what theres is in reality

      (Quote)

  47. TAE – My mistake mate, thought you meant we should be getting the same as them!

Thing with advertising exposure though, is that you’re only really getting it at our home matches, so shouldn’t that make it worth about half as much as Wonga pay? I know there’s more of it, but kit sponsors are far more visible in reality – they’re actually part of the fabric of the best bits of football, i.e, goals, celebrations etc.

Wonga pay us naff all, so working out what SD owe us is a murky business.

      (Quote)

  48. TDS – I am beginning to think you’re just pig headed and won’t see the real argument because it will mean you’re wrong.

It’s not about fan base. It’s about global exposure and because the PL is so huge and watched by hundreds of millions of people in Asia and Aftica ect SD are getting huge amount of exposure.

If it was down to fan base The bigger clubs would take more of the TV money share, but they don’t!

      (Quote)

  49. STUART

The bigger clubs CAN’T take more of the TV money base because that’s not what the Premier League agreement says. I’m sure they’ve tried in negotiations though.

When there’s a match televised all over the world and it’s Man Utd v Chelsea, how many worldwide viewers do you reckon they have? Newcastle v Villa? Not so much…

      (Quote)

  50. I think I said for years that we were losing out on £8-10mil a yr revenue due to SD getting it for free, though a few disagreed with me. Its ok saying there is no guarantee or proof that other companies would pay that kind of money for the advertising, but there is no way we will ever know because Jabba will not rent the space out because he wants it for SD.

  51. http://www.evertonfc.com/news/2014/10/30/everton-reveal-strong-financial-results

“The Club’s sponsorship, advertising and merchandising revenue also increased from £7.6m in 2013 to £8.4m in 2014, boosted by the long-term support of key partners such as Chang and Kitbag.”

In what world are we missing out on £10m a year when Everton don’t even get that IN TOTAL?

Some of you guys are living in the cloud cuckoo land when SBR was the manager, we signed some of the best players in the world for big money and the Champions League was the minimum target.

      (Quote)

  52. TDS – Why aren’t you reading? Advertisement is only worth what a company will pay for it and a company will only pay depending on the returns they get from it. Now, before Ashley bought NUFC SD weren’t known outside of the UK. In fact all the publicity they’ve had from Ashley’s association with NUFC has completely changed their international brand awareness. In fact ita quite hard to put into words the difference it’s made to them. So to SD it probably is worth £10m a year. Maybe not to somebody else with other circumstances but to SD I would say so because it’s revolutionised their brand.

      (Quote)

  53. STUART

You’re entirely subscribing SD’s global growth to the advertising at NUFC? I think you’re somewhat overselling our advertising space! And if NUFC were to tell SD that it would cost £10m, why wouldn’t Everton say they’d do it for £9m? Villa for £8m? Sunderland for £6m?

You’re just plucking a figure out of the air, and based on your very limited financial and business knowledge, deciding that it sounds reasonable because SD has been making huge profits. But as you also well know, if SD can buy something cheaper elsewhere, then they will.

Our shirt sponsor gives us around £6m a year I believe. You think advertising around the ground is worth more? Exposure from shirts is massive compared to advertising around the ground! So no way would they pay £10m for that when they could sponsor our shirts for £6m.

      (Quote)

  54. TOONDARNSARF

  55. TAE

No club outside of the top 6 has a shirt sponsor paying £10m so in what world do we get £10m for something that is clearly worth less than a shirt sponsor?

Things are only worth what others want to pay for them. Supply and demand. So why would we be able to sell something for £10m if other clubs would sell a near identical product for much much less?

      (Quote)

  60. TAE

Of course it can be compared! It’s a superior marketing product. Shirt sponsorship is worth more than advertising hoardings because the exposure is massively greater.

Why would I pay £10m for advertising on hoardings at NUFC if I could pay £8m and guarantee the shirt sponsorship at any PL club outside of the top 6? The latter is worth considerably more to a business!

      (Quote)

  61. TAE

You can’t tell. Unless you run a marketing/advertising company and can analyse every single marketing activity that both companies have undertaken, run surveys in each of the countries that they operate in and gain access to specific financial details that show the profit gained in each country.

And…it doesn’t matter! See post 146. Things are only worth what others are willing to pay for them. Doesn’t matter a jot how much you or I think they are worth.
