Press’n our buttons

Just a quick post to keep things ticking over. I guess most of the conversations on here at the moment revolves around what the press has to speculate about on any given day. So please feel free to join in the melee and see what comes out of it once things become a little clearer (We actually sign someone)

Those new players are around here somewhere!

  1. You’re right. Clearly shirt sponsors are worth nothing because Northern Rock failed. Obviously that’s the reason. All of those huge companies paying PL clubs massive money to be on their shirts, they’ll all fold in a few years, you watch…

What hits me when I’m watching the games? The football. Unless you’ve got a bee in your bonnet about SD and you’re the sort to grumble about it all the way through the game. What about the NUFC shirts on people as they walk around town? The photos in the media? The interviews? And so on.

Your arguments are simply dumb. I’m out.

  2. Trippier signs for Spurs. At least 12 teams in the PL have at least 1 in already and here we are failing to even get an Assistant Coach through the door. Come on Board, get busy!

  3. <<<<<<<<<< but i might have a bee in me bonnet about the club loseing a revenue source, that could be an extra player bought each season but some just aint seeing the big picture 😯

  4. if hes runing the club as a bussiness aint ground advertiseing part of the clubs bussiness so he should be coughing up the going rate with say a 10 per cent discount, would have no prob with his crapy advertising then, after all bussiness is bussiness

Nice deal they pulled off there.

  6. Virgin offered us 10 million person and we didn’t even give them a chance to renew the deal. Why not ? SD should pay something for advertising the stadium is absolutely covered with the sports direct. From the top of the stadium to the dug out seats and dressing room etc.

      (Quote)

  7. TDS – You say we all know that if SD could buy something cheaper then they will. Well I’m sorry to have to tell you this, but you can’t get much cheaper than FREE!!!!

As for my limited knowledge – You’re right, I’m not an expert in global advertising. I’m only going off what a global advertising expert said on TV. I know we shouldn’t listen to these experts and we should just believe people like you but eh ho. I also remember an article in the Joirnal saying they’d also spoke to an expert and they said £8-10m. Suppose they’re wrong too.

By the way, that’s what it’s probably worth to SD, not anybody else, just SD!

  8. Charnley is gambling again.
We have needed reinforcements for years, merely to stand still. We almost got relegated last season, but Charnley reckons McClaren is a safer pair of hands than Pardew and Carver, and will cut his transfer cloth to suit…expect to see few movements in the transfer market. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Williamson in the squad at the start of the season…

watched a doc on that just before the Olympics it was good for athletics but no good as a footie stadium that was claiming surpose to have a **** view for football

  10. they never told the dude that designed the stadium that they wanted to use it as a footie stadium after the Olympics so the seating all wrong according to the dude that designed it

  14. Yeovil Town are even signing players (Ben Tozer). Somebody was telling me the transfer window was not open, I forget who, but other teams seem to be doing business.

Now, the club have bleated on that the new head coach would only have a limited role in transfers and that the main drivers would be Carr and Charnley. If that’s the case, then why do we need much input from McClaren? I admit it would be better if he did have a say, but their whole plan was for Carr to make the recruitment decisions.

Furthermore, in the article Kimtoon posted @165 Gibbo says that McClaren hasn’t had a chance to watch the squad. Admittedly, it would be nice if he had a few training sessions but equally they have an audio-video room to review last season, supposedly a worldwide scouting network that I assume would have countless tapes of our targets – and doesn’t Stevo have a f-ing DVD player or computer at home that he could burn a few games on and watch at night? Fatty probably sacked the computer technician as part of his cost cutting so nobody knows how to work the equipment 🙂

  15. Here’s an article on our goalkeepers:

    http://cominghomenewcastle.sbnation.com/2015/6/19/8814797/Newcastle-United-goalkeepers-krul-eliott-alnwick-woodman-darlow

It is not bad but they fail to mention a few things:

That Timmy was always wanting to hoof as his first option and never hit any of our players.

That Alnwick should never have been near the first team and whoever was in charge of assessing our backup goalies did a really bad job.

That Woodman is 17 and goalies don’t tend to play until they mature a bit.

That Elliot had some “mystery” injury that was never really explained, much like injuries to de Jong and Aarons.

      (Quote)

  16. I think what I am saying is that there is just so much misinformation and mismanagement at our club. They tell us one thing and do another. From the appointment of Carver (did it again Mark 🙂 ) to having Alnwick anywhere near a PL side to the Physios and Doctors. They misdiagnosed Jonas’ ******* cancer FFS and then wouldn’t pay for the treatment.

It all smacks of incompetence. If it was an isolated issue then fine, but it is at every level.

      (Quote)

  17. And on Stuart’s and TAEs issue about billboards. Every other team has electronic billboards that switch during the game to maximise revenue. We have fixed Tat Direct signs and don’t even attempt to look for other sponsors to bring more money in. It might only be a couple of million but Fatty is drilling his own well at the training ground to save money and you would think that revenue for the club would be just as important.

      (Quote)

  18. Also, you know Carr was an abject failure as a manager, right? Giving him total say in recruitment therefore might not be the best idea.

Alright, rants over. My car was towed and it put me in a bad mood 🙂

  28. Maybe those who are interested can look at this http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1905424

Far too boring for my tastes. I’m not in the least bit interested in Ashley’s money or what what advertising does. I watch football; I don’t watch advertising boards.

Nor do I care what newspapers say. Although I find what newspapers do to suck readers in very interesting. One of a print journalist’s skills is reading blogs. That way they get a feel for the audience and can tailor an article to cater for that need.

Thus you (the blogger) reap what you sow. And it all feeds back into one big self-sustaining loop.

… I bet (had to toss that in because it covers you against all logical arguments against your point … apparently. Or maybe a 😉 or a 😆 will do it as well).

      (Quote)

  29. Just read the conclusion to that report. Makes no frickin sense to me at all. They could do with an editor as well. It always astounds me why academics publish papers that they haven’t had edited, especially those who are publishing in a second language.

But I guess that’s an issue for somewhere other than on a football blog 😆

  31. BrisV @188: have you ever read the replies to the Chronicle articles? Their writers would slash their wrists if they took notice of their readers.

I think what you are referring to is click mining or whatever the name for it is. However, there is so much bile directed at the Chronicle “journalists” I doubt they get too much actual feedback.

Then there are The Mirror and The Mail where your IQ goes down a point reading each article and hits about 80 after reading a few of the readers’ comments. Most blogs and newspaper comments sections make you fear for the future of mankind. And don’t get me started about twitter…

      (Quote)

  32. AMF: I don’t think there is any doubt about the fact that NUFC are being shortchanged by Tat Direct’s free advertising. The only question is the amount and 10 million a year seems very high to me. 3 or 4 maybe is what would be paid on the open market but it is probably worth most to a company like SD. The rest of the world is not as cynical or aware about the relationship between SD and NUFC as those on here.

We are not an elite club but we do have a following so the advertising is worth something and we get paid nothing.

      (Quote)

  33. Chris G likes to point out that there is not 34 mil sitting in the bank, but says it is only about 18 or 20 mil. He forgets:

    1. the accounts closed June 30th of last year and we are just about there for this year when more money would have been accumulated… a lot of money.

    2. last years accounts included a massive ONE TIME PAYMENT of an overdraft, so this years profit will likely be much higher.

    3. they offloaded and let go quite a few players so the wages will probably have gone down as it stands for the coming season.

    4. the new PL TV deal is guaranteed money.

We have loads of money in the bank at the moment. Much more than the 34 mil that people bandy about. We also know we are guaranteed a future revenue, the only question is whether we will commit to spending it.

My job is a Financial Planner (I have a masters degree in financial planning), the intricacies of NUFC accounts bore me but I can see the big picture and that is we are generating shed loads of cash.

      (Quote)

  34. I keep seeing the dissecting of the accounts but that is not seeing the wood for the trees. People have talked about the free advertising (including me) but it misses the point that we are throwing off massive amounts of profit anyway and it is there if we want to use it. A few mil lost to SDs free advertising, an interest free loan or cash in the bank not generating interest (from Chris G) is neither here nor there in the big picture.

  35. David Ginola is expressing his strong desire to be a manager. Maybe one day in the future he’s destined for the toon.

      (Quote)

  36. Don’t be ridiculous
To start with he would want control of his players comings and goings. As would any coach/manager worth his salt.
Secondly, London is the big draw and he is more likely destined for spuds.

Where have you been anyway, I thought we would have had your words of wisdom on Stevo by now? I have said I will reserve judgement unlike I did on the last one because I knew he would fail miserably, and I was proved correct.

  39. And Troysta: instead of having a cheap dig, why not comment on what I said about the NUFC finances. Agree or disagree, but you would rather just do some of your childish “banter”.

  40. Haha. Psychs calm down my little angry garden gnome. 😆

I e been very busy lately, besides, the close season bores me.

Player speculation drives me up the wall.

Regarding McLaren. He’s as I predicted when he was being touted by those wanting rid of Pards. More of the same. A steady premier league coach. Spouts exactly the same football clichés. I guarantee you will be wanting McLaren sacked within 12-18mths.

I believe he’s a safe pair of hands but will need backing and with the right backing, within our resources could get us in the top 7 and fight consistently for a Europa spot. That’s down to Ashley keeping his promises though.

    Bootsy.
I will be back next season if I see real ambition in the summer. I’m not hopeful.

In the meantime, Ginola builds up a fantastic reputation with Spuds and moves to Barca amd wins everything in sight and then the time will be right to lead us to European glory.

  48. Troysta: I am not angry in the least I just sensed you might be ready to go on a wind up. I don’t really care what you believe, I think what I said about the club’s finances is close to the mark and I will be happy to make my point to Chris G. I still see that you haven’t disputed anything I said.

If McClaren has us playing awful football I probably will turn on him as I think we deserve a bit of excitement. You know, like the players at the top of this blog brought and for most of that time we weren’t a rich club.

I am glad you are back on, but we both know you like to go on a wind-up 🙂 I have actually been driving myself bonkers reading too many articles on newsnow and the comments on The Chronicle.

      (Quote)

  49. Stu – I bet you gave him both barrels then based on all the **** you give him on here!!.

Kim – why is that embarrassing?. Have you read the headline or what Round actually said?. He wants a head coach job, not a job for the head coach – what’s the problem with that?!. He’s not saying he doesn’t want to come because we’re a **** club or the set up is all wrong or whatever. He just wants the main gig – good luck to him.

      (Quote)

  50. Sharpy, Neville sounded out and says no, Zenden says no and now Round as he wants the main gig apparently. So basically if the next one approached comes in he’ll know he’s,what 3rd choice? It’s embarrassing that a club like ours can’t tempt guys to coach us.

      (Quote)

  51. Kim – I’m really not bothered about Neville at all, he has no prior coaching experience at all, so what would he actually bring?!. Zenden is linked with Liverpool, which would mean him coaching at a higher level – can’t blame him for that and Round wants a top job, likewise can’t blame him for that either. This is something that happens at every club you know.
If McClaren picked the phone up to Lee Clark or Steve Watson and offered them the job, they would take it – even if they were 15th choice. But McClaren is looking at his options, but there’s nowt else to talk about at the mo, so god forgive an opportunity is missed

      (Quote)

  52. Sharpy , Zenden is not off to Liverpool mate, he ruled them and us out in an interview the other day. The point with the coaches is that we want the best we can get, Steve said that himself, he has approached the guys in question so obviously rates them even if you don’t. He will now have to look at 4th 5th possibly 6th choice and that is not a good start imo. Sharpy you can make all the sarcastic comments about god forbid we have something to talk about all you like, but why are we in this lousy position of scraping the barrel for talking points? You should try writing a thread mate, it’s a fecking nightmare at the moment. 🙄

      (Quote)

  53. Kim – so if Zenden has turned down Liverpool as well then maybe the guy just isn’t ready to get back into coaching – there’s nowt we can do about that – that isn’t a fault or **** up of the clubs, but if they don’t ask the question they never know – of get accused of lack of ambition or not going for the best. It happens in football and all I am saying is that we shouldn’t make such a big deal about it. The people have gave there reasons and they are valid & fair – the only people belittling the club at the moment are the fans that I can see. Anyone who has something different to say gets ‘well you write an article’ – thank you but no.
I apologise if you post and I don’t reply, I’m on half nights and am off to work now so am no ignoring you or ran off in a huff or anything like that 😉

      (Quote)

  54. Sharpy,
You should try writing a thread mate, it’s a fecking nightmare at the moment. 🙄
Does not = you should write a thread, was merely a statement, as in it’s difficult with so little news at the moment.

As for fans belittling the club, good for them/us/me, they are reaping what they’ve sown. Treat your paying customers like mugs and whoa betide, if my M&S undies fall apart at the first wash you can bet I’m gonna tell all and sundry that the company is pants 😉
