  1. Cheers for the thread Kim. Be good to get some new blood into the back line. Still want a proper renowned CB signed mind…

If I find a video of Mbemba, do you want me to add it to the end of your article?

  2. Thanks Kim for some reason I think Chancel will be a good player for us, I like what I have read about him, so here’s hoping.

  3. Can’t find much of his defending, but he’s certainly better than our current lot in the opposition box!

  4. Get him signed then go full tilt for Austin, Two proven goal-scorers would be an awesome window for us………..

  5. Kim – good article. Seems a big (ish) fee for a relative unknown, but from what I’ve seen of him, he looks good. I’m happy to go with him as the club seem to be getting right at the moment – if we can get this lad, Austin, Aymen and the young Dutch winger then what a window that would be!!! 😯

      (Quote)

  6. I have to say that having watched the highlights from the game last night – if we only had enough money left for either Austin or Aymen – we have to get Aymen – or a CB should I say.
We looked shambolic at the back again last night – especially with crosses into the box … absolutely woeful. I have honesty never see a weaker set of defenders.

      (Quote)

  7. Sharpy – We have had the same central defenders since we were in th Fizzy and our best one now 33 so ain’t getting better! I’m not totally convinced at left back and I certainly don’t rate Williamson and Taylor is never fit. That’s why we need two new centre backs. Let Taylor and Colo be back up and **** Williamson off. Last season we looked like conceding every time someone crossed the ball into our box.

  8. Lee Ryder wrote a article about kemen and didn’t no he was captaining France under 19 in Europe what a total idiot saying we haven’t seen him all summer..

      (Quote)

  9. Stu – is that Mbemba plus 1 or Mbemba plus 2 mate?. I think plus 1 would do this window to allow us to look at Lascelles – get shot of Willo and keep Colo & Saylor while 3 new CBs bed in – Lascelles, Mbemba and possibly Aymen.

Also I’m really chuffed that we are looking to sort out Aarons contract – along with Woodman & Armstrong apparently.

  10. I agree that we still need another CB, as it’s foolish to think that Mbemba will automatically be able to slot in as a solid Premier League CB. He’s 20 (maybe) and coming from Belgium. There’s almost always an adjustment period coming from another league, and Belgium clearly a step below just about any other league where we’re scouting for players. Granted, he did get some CL action, but that was only a handful of games. If we could get Abdennour in, he could start the season with Coloccini, then bring Mbemba in when he’s ready or when the inevitable injuries hit. Williamson needs to go to clear out a squad space, and I wouldn’t lose any sleep if Taylor goes, either. Not sure where that would leave us with the homegrown quota, though.

All that being said, picking up Boetius would be exciting, and I wouldn’t complain if we pick up Austin, even if it does mean losing Cisse.

  11. No, just the Congo load plus 1. If Lascelles is good I’d let Taylor go. He’s just no good playing only 10-15 games a season. So we’d have Colo, Lascelles and two new CB.

Not too sure about Aarons and his contract. There was something in the Guardian but local journo says nothing imminent. The better he plays, the better position he is in. I always thought he had great potential so I really can’t understand why they didn’t offer him the going rate and that would negate any risk of him leaving next year for a few set by tribunal.

  12. Stuart & Sharpy: Timmy-the-hoof didn’t help either. He never came out of his 6 yard box for anything (except a hoof) and when he stayed in it for a free kick he watched as the ball sailed into the net. He was f-cking **** for 6 months and nobody would say it. Hopefully, it was because he had the two useless lumps in front of him (or was it?). Coloccini is very good with his footballing skills, unfortunately that doesn’t always translate to good defending.

  13. The Dutch CB at Celitc could still be an option as well I reckon. I think they wanted to keep him to ensure they got into the CL then might consider selling him having secured the money it brings and the attraction of CL footy for any replacement

  14. Asim: don’t get me started on Lee “cut and paste from The Daily Star” Ryder. To say his writing is formulaic is an insult to Alan Oliver, the king of “insert name here” journalism. Lee never does any actual journalism, never writes anything original and never breaks any stories. I sort of find myself wondering what is the point of him?

He did get to have a nice trip to Milwaukee, California and Oregon although he must have spent most of it at the bar for all we learnt about the team, McClaren and the coaches.

  15. 5 things you never knew about “insert something here”. Then proceed to list 5 things every NUFC fan knew already.

  16. Eric – yeah, it’s a valid point you make about Krul like. Most successful defences have a commanding & vocal keeper behind them. Krul is a quality shot stopper but that’s about it.

Soccer Sauce: toon agree fee for Matip club don’t really want to part

      (Quote)

  18. Sharpy: that may be why the Dutch national team have him in for penalties and not for the rest of the match- they know his limitations?

      (Quote)

  19. Matip missed training y/day and today

Toon enquired about Shaqiri but no bid yet

  20. Ice: Have you seen Shaqiri? If we get him I might even give the fatman some credit – he is a very good player.

      (Quote)

  21. I am much happier with McClaren. He can actually talk without sounding arrogant (Pardew) or stupid (Carver).

      (Quote)

  22. ES agree good player, yes I have seen him play a number of times, very tricky guy and can cross a good ball tends to work back a bit too

      (Quote)

  23. Everyone is saying we need another CB. We have Lascelles who has palyed in preseason and looks a good prospect. With Mbemba, Colo and Taylor thats four sell Williamson. If the two young lads are good enough lets get on with it could be centre back pairing for years. Aarons and De Jong are like two new signings so we need another striker maybe and the Dutch winger then I will be more than happy. If we then sell for example Sissoko then we need to replace

      (Quote)

  24. ES Pardew would have taken all the credit for these signing and told how he got them over the line, man was a arsehole

      (Quote)

  25. If we end up getting Matip, it would be very much like the Mitrovic transfer. It seemed certain he was heading to Porto, but in the end it seemed like they were confident of getting him all along. I’d all but forgotten/given up on getting Matip, but that would be great. Could be a good pairing with Mbemba, too, since Matip has plenty of height, right?

      (Quote)

  26. Ice – really?! 😯 could those 2 really come off?!. Matip has always been my preferred choice for CB.
I’m not going to get carried away with those rumours, because they are doing well in this window (though a bit slower than I’d like). The Mitrovic deal provided to me that the Gini signing wasn’t just a fluke. Mbemba will be another cracking catch – so I’m happy to see what happens thereafter.

      (Quote)

  27. I know I have been critical of NUFC in the past 6 months, but who wouldn’t have been? Dog turds were better than us, and that is being kind to Mackems / Troysta. Now we have 3 new first team players and hopefully a couple more. If Aarons and de Jong get fit we may actually have a team that is worthy of wearing the black and white shirt.

And the Chicago Cubs might go to the play offs – the earth has spun off its axis and I don’t know what to make of it.

  28. shakiri went from basel to fc bayern, then to inter. he’s 5′-2″ in his doc martens but is fast, tricky and has a great left foot. would cost us a canny penny though

      (Quote)

  29. ES SM has just said fans will be shocked with the next “signings” as they off peoples radar, the mind boggles

      (Quote)

  30. Watch out mind – Matip and Mbemba both Africans. Would create a massive black hole in our defenseman come the ACON. Although Colo would be gone by then and hopefully replaced with another top defender from somewhere a bit closer to these shores…

      (Quote)

  31. MM: he is 5-2 wide as well. Here’s a cliche for you – I don’t see many people complaining about Messi’s height 🙂 Shearer is only 5-11.

      (Quote)

  32. MM £15/18 mil they say they want,he’s just knocked Stoke back so they must have struck a deal with the club

      (Quote)

  33. AND: all we were asking for was a statement of intent after last year. We have just made one and that will hopefully lead to us getting more of the players we want.

I said it before, but what else can Fatty do with his 4th billion? He has enough yachts and private jets FFS. Now he needs a good football team.

      (Quote)

  34. Shakiri would be a high profile signing, but I do like the look of that young Dutch winger as well. Aarons & Perez look really good down the left – Sissoko is right at the minute, but who backs him up? – Obertan. Maybe we need to be looking at a right sided wide man rather than another lefty.

      (Quote)

  35. Sham – steady on now mate. We are going the right way, but the new players need time & McClaren and his coaches need time to get their ideas across – especially the defensive set up.
We are making good signings and making ground on those around us – but the widow isn’t shut for them either don’t forget.

      (Quote)

  36. I knew he was fast but I didn’t realise what a class player Aarons really is. He seems to be using his left foot a lot now as well and I thought he was right footed but he genuinely looks two-footed. If he can avoid another injury I think he should be one of the first names on the team sheet the way he is playing atm. I seriously think he has the potential to be BETTER than Sterling. Why not? Sterling is overrated and unlike Aarons he usually blasts his chances over the bar.

  37. S the tale goes toon have offered £13 plus one of two fringe players for Austin, waiting for reply from QPR

  38. DJG: it is great for us to play pub teams – Portland number 2 🙂 I am happy that we seem to be signing good players. I still haven’t given up on Cabella, there is something there.

C’mon Fatman. We will probably never win a trophy or get to the CL but give us some hope.

  41. Sharpy I’m going for an early call for final position next season: 8th.

We have not finished shopping yet and we have a better coaching set up in my opinion. Not to mention the increase in confidence and team moral these changes must be having. We are nailed on for a much better season. 🙂

  42. williamson should of been sold in jan by then its was blatant he wernt dealing with the high balls in to the box any more

      (Quote)

  43. Ice – I’d offer them Riviere on a loan deal as well mate. He could save them a bob or two this season looking to replace Austin. If it works out they have extra coin next season (if they get promoted again) – if not, they have money to strengthen in Jan.

      (Quote)

  44. I’m not sure this is a good thing, but there are a lot of players we should be happy to offload to QPR, especially if it helps us get Austin. If it’s true that they’re choosing between Bigi and Vuckic, that’s fine – does anyone really see them breaking into the first team this year?

      (Quote)

  45. Sham – I think we will have a better season, and we have better coaches and hopefully 4-6 new players (better players) – but things aren’t going to be fixed over one summer in my opinion mate. If we can get 8th I think that would be a fantastic season based on the last 2 & all the changes we have made.

  47. Only way I can see us signing another CB is if McClaren wants to shift out one of Taylor or Colo. I still expect our back 4 options to be Mbemba, Colo, Taylor and Lascelles with Dummet and Good the likely next two.

I’d obviously be happy with another exciting signing though.

I wonder what first team players will leave though…

  48. It might take a while for the new coaches to get their point across and it might be a bit of a struggle early on. I have a feeling we might have a slow start but once the new players settle and they understand and get use to the coaches style and what they want we could do ok.

Patience is the key next season.

  49. Stuart

That’s a fair comment. Another reason that I’d be surprised to see a huge turnover of players.

Don’t think patience is particularly well stocked here right now though…

  54. On topic:

“The latest news is that he has been to Paris to sort out a work visa…..”

I don’t think that’s quite right – I think it would have just been a travel visa that he was sorting out, not a work visa. He will be travelling to the UK on a DR Congo passport and would therefore have needed to obtain a visa to simply enter the country and take his medical.

This is how it was reported on the Anderlecht-online website
    ( https://www.anderlecht-online.be/fr/article/129774 )

“Chancel M’Bemba a eu son visa hier à Paris afin de pouvoir se rendre en Angleterre pour rejoindre son futur club”

    which translates as:

Chancel M’Bemba got his visa yesterday at Paris in order to travel to England to join his future club.

In any case, it isn’t the player’s responsibility to sort out the work permit – it’s the responsibility of the new club to submit the application AFTER they’ve signed the player, and that has only just happened. It normally takes 3-4 weeks for an application to be approved (it took 4 weeks when we signed Curtis Good) and I imagine it might take even longer in the case of M’Bemba because of the problem caused by the DR Congo’s low FIFA ranking. If people are expecting to see him turn out against Southampton on 9 August they may be disappointed, because I don’t think his work permit will have been approved by then, unless the club are somehow able to get it fast tracked.

      (Quote)

  55. TDS – I don’t think 5 players of high quality would be as bad as last season even while they were settling in, but expectations could be higher this season and rightly so. But to see their potential it could take until next season.

Chris – To be fair, who cares whether he’s getting his visa or work permit in Paris, London or Congo?

      (Quote)

  56. Chris@69, Fair enough, just passing on what was reported in press. What you say makes more sense.

      (Quote)

  57. I’m pleased with the news that Aarons intents to stay put and sign a new deal. It’s also good that we are looking at this young Dutch winger and building for the seasons ahead under McClaren. But I will be surprised and a bit disappointed if we were then to loose Kemen.
I don’t see AC Milan as one of Europes super powers – but he would probably have more chance of winning something in Italy with them than with us in the PL.
I think it would largely depend on how McClaren sees the lads future with NUFC.

  58. I may be wrong here but I thought four non-EU players was the limit at the club we must be very close or over to that limit,if that’s the case next signings must be EU players, ime sure someone on here will know the imfo
