Coloccini’s red rightly overturned, but the FA still baffle….

Madley's madness
Madley’s madness
So the good news is that Fabricio Coloccini has had the red card that was shown to him on Sunday overturned.

Common sense has prevailed regarding a decision that was quite frankly ludicrous.

Whether or not it was a penalty for a forceful shoulder charge is debatable, but a red card offence? Never…

Of course it won’t change the result even though the feeling among many including myself was that it would probably have ended differently had we maintained eleven men on the pitch. It’s all irrelevant now anyway. But I’m glad that common sense has been used. There are moves underway to get rid of the so called “triple penalty” for instances such as this for next season with a new, more common sense approach, being favoured.

It’s long been argued that conceding a penalty is, by its name, a penalty anyway. But this is where the common sense should come into force. Was it a dangerous challenge? Not in this case. Was it an obvious goalscoring opportunity? The FA seem to think it wasn’t.

Anyway I guess it’s all down to interpretation of each rule but it’s the punishment that needs looking at. Had this appeal failed we’ve conceded a penalty anyway, had a man sent off and also had him banned for, in this case, an additional game. It’s over the top and should be looked at not just because of this but also throughout football.

What doesn’t sit well with me is that the FA have now charged us for failing to control the players in the aftermath of what has proved to be a wrong decision. So how dies that work? Do the FA not understand that the players may have felt a sense of injustice at an incorrect decision? Are they not allowed to even vent their frustration or argue their point?

It seems not and it appears that players should just accept what a referee says – no matter how wrong it may be.

  1. As ever, there’s never any sense or logic when it comes to the FA.
Perhaps critical decisions such as these, should be reviewed live by a 4th referee, such as in rugby. The technology is there and only adds seconds.
Ref’s are human and do make mistakes. But their mistakes shouldn’t be allowed to change the outcome of a game.

  2. Exactly BB. when a penalty decision has been made, it would perhaps take less than a minute to review and after all, too much time is already added on for free kicks so whats the harm in it……? So what if it does slow the game down by a few secconds, as long as the correct decision is made, and even more critical, the correct team wins the day.

  3. I think we already know the team that starts on Saturday – same as for the Mackems with Anita for Colback. The question is is Tiote fit enough to last the game and will he be taken off if he gets another yellow or we are losing after 60 minutes? I think any of these 3 scenarios are possible/probable and we have to have a plan B.

The plan B should probably be moving Sissoko to the middle and letting Gini do what he did in the last home game when he scored 4. Bring on either Thauvin or Aarons for Tiote.

I think we can beat Stoke but we have to assume Tiote will not last the whole game and plan accordingly. Gouffran as a defensive midfielder should not be part of that plan 🙂

  4. The Mackem game is now spilt milk under the bridge. We aren’t going to change the FA rules so why even think about it.

  5. From my perch here in the USA, I’d say the ref was either a racist or colonialist. He denied our black guy Wini a penalty when pulled down by a white guy, then awards the penalty to the white guy when he gets a shoulder. Colbeck points out the error at each end and gets booked for defending Wini, the black guy.

  6. 4th offical the way to go i said that last year, dont see it wasteing time meself, the ref has the time to restore order, then get the opinion of the 4th offical in his ear.

      (Quote)

  7. TAE: I could dissect it more if you want by pointing out that Beeguy says the Ref might have been Colonialist. Uh. How?

      (Quote)

  8. Awards a penalty to a white guy who was shoved by a er… white guy. The whole comment is Adam Sandler-esque in its non-comedic value.

      (Quote)

  9. BEEGUY
<<<<<<<<<<<<< is still convinced the ref was bent meself but had not look it at from your angle 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  10. TAE: he is bringing race into something that has nothing to do with race. He doesn’t seem to understand what Colonialism is. And it is simply not funny. If there is a joke there, I don’t see it.

      (Quote)

  11. I mean, if you are going to bring race into this discussion where it obviously doesn’t belong then at least make it funny. BeeGuys’s comment added nothing and my brain hurts from even thinking about where his mind is at to think that was in any way funny. Same with you TAE. You usually are entertaining but I don’t get you on this one.

  12. And TAE: you can tell me to lighten up if you want, but I am not upset. Rather, I am dumbfounded by the stupidity of that comment.

  13. Just makes me feel more angry about the result to be honest. Would have been better if they said it was the right decision.

  14. As I said before I was so rudely interrupted. It is cliche time – no crying over spilt milk, water under the bridge, get back on the horse, what goes around will come around etc.

  15. you can’t blame anyone but collo – he gave the pen away (which it was) with a daft tackle/barge inside the box.

the ref then has to decide whether it’s a sending off or not & he makes the wrong call 😐

collo put him in that position – it’s his fault.

it wouldn’t surprise me if we end up with another sending off this saturday – it’s a regular for us these days.

collo was the last man which should tell ya the fa did not think it was a foul in the 1st place or they would not of revoked the card, the refs were ya should be pointing the blame and shoulder to shoulder competeing for the space is not a foul

  17. TAE: can you explain what was humourous about Beeguy’s comment? Just wondering? If it is funny then tell me how it is funny because this dude don’t know how it is funny. You, dude, obviously don’t get irony either.

      (Quote)

  18. Beeguy I think your living in the 1950’s in America where communist’s couldn’t get a job in Hollywood or anywhere else. I don’t think football’s like that over here. Although you do have a race issue there and the ref did seem racist towards black players. Or it could just be the ref was paid off and Colocini fell right into his trap. Cattlemore got nothing and was white. Still it changed the game in Sunderlands favour.

  19. @24 and @25: did the FA say it wasn’t a foul or that Elliot would have got there so Coloccini was not the last man and therefore it wasn’t a red card? They should clear it up, but they won’t.

  20. ERIC SYKES
collo was the last man and if the fa revoked it should tell ya everything ya need to know

  21. I fear for us against Stoke. They’re a very tough team with lots of hard nuts and we’ll be desperate for the win. I wouldn’t play Tiote either. After 5 years he still hasn’t stopped leaving a heavy foot on every challenge. Liability!
If we try to press them back we’ll never score and they’ll do us on the counter. We’re only good at the counter ourselves so invite them on to us.
My very imaginative team would be to leave the front 4 alone and play:
    Woodman
    Janmaat Mbemba Dummett Mbabu
    Anita Colo
    Sissoko
    Perez Gini
    Mitrovic

      (Quote)

  22. TAE: they said it wasn’t a red card. That could be because Elliot would have got there anyway and it therefore wasn’t denying a goalscoring opportunity. The other interpretation is that it was not a foul anyway and therefore could not have been a red card.

      (Quote)

  23. ERIC SYKES
i recorded the game on sky i did not think it was a foul live and after i played it back 20 times i still saw no foul i saw 2 players shoulder to shoulder competeing for the space,im no fan of collo but this time it aint his fault in my opinion

      (Quote)

  24. Georgio: why would you play Woodman? 18 year olds never play in the PL except in extreme emergencies. Have you ever seen him play? I haven’t. His record is a few reserve games and I think 11 games in the 4th division for Crawley Town or somebody. How did it work out with Alnwick last year, who was also an England Youth Player?

      (Quote)

  25. It was still a silly mistake that Colocini made and I was very angry with him at the time. I just have a terrible feeling in the summer we will go after another striker or midfielder rather than strengthen or defence.

      (Quote)

  26. TAE: I am not asking about your opinion (don’t take that the wrong way). I am wondering what the FA are ruling because they don’t explain themselves.

      (Quote)

  27. ERIC SYKES
collo was defo the last man so if the fa thought it was a foul the card would of stood 😉

      (Quote)

  28. Eric – the kid’s a very very good prospect. Every one who’s seen him says so. He’s no Jack Alnwick.
Tubby Elliott’s 3rd choice for us and for his country. In my mind, he’s slow and not very mobile. If he’d come out quicker there would have been no pen and no red card. When he’s beaten he makes it look like he had no chance when really he was poor. I just feel he’s proved to be not good enough.

      (Quote)

  29. Now follow me on this. From the Ref’s viewpoint he called a foul on Coloccini, which the FA presumably said was wrong. He could not have seen from his viewpoint that Elliot would, or would not, have got there (unless he had super-human depth perception). The only explanation is that there was NO FOUL, NO PENALTY, NO RED CARD. Although the FA have not explained themselves.

      (Quote)

  30. TAE: I will do a Troysta on ya. You still haven’t explained what was funny about BeeGuys comment.

      (Quote)

  31. Georgio: I don’t know man. I am just saying that 18 year old goal keepers never get a start in the PL except under extraordinary circumstances so we are stuck with Elliot.

      (Quote)

  32. And also… to see the game in terms of colour like BeeGuy did is inherently racist. It never occurred to me to think that there was any racial undertone to the Ref’s decisions and I question the thought process of someone who did – pathetic joke or not.

      (Quote)

  33. TAE – It is irrelevant whether Colo was the last man or not. That is not the law. The law states if the defenders denies a clear goal scoring opportunity then he shall be sent off. It is very feasible that the FA thought it was a foul but decided Colo didn’t deny a clear goal scoring opportunity. Personally I am still of the opinion that if that collision happened in the corner it would have been a goal kick and play on.

      (Quote)

  34. Colo was reckless with the challenge but it seems so was the ref. With 11 men we could of still drew or won. It was never a sending off due to Elliott’s position. Elliott would of either gathered it or deflected it with his outstretched legs

      (Quote)

  35. Mark I thought we were jinxed the second Troy said we were definitely going to win today. Last time he did that was against Leicester under Carver and we lost 3-0 with Williamson getting sent off.

  36. Ashley is as hurt just as much as anyone 😎 He stands to lose 129 million pounds next season on a premiership place but he sure has alot to learn about running a club.

      (Quote)

  37. Well it’s as clear as mud. If they are saying it’s not a sending off then it must be cause no foul took place 😕 If so, it couldn’t be a penalty can it.

      (Quote)

  38. Kimtoon: I think I said the same thing @39. Doesn’t get us the fKin 3 points though.

Saw Sammy helped out your team yesterday. How about us sending Cardiff Willo, Gouffran and Taylor?

  39. Bristol City are only a point of the relegation zone at the moment. Yeovil could get relegated 3 times in a row.

I saw that Sammy miss too, hard to believe.

  41. Stem, Georgio, Lean times for me as a supporter at the mo, both the Toon and my home team in the ***** and the national team will most likely flunk at the Euro’s 🙄 🙁

  42. I can hack a penalty. I think it was weal bug can see why it was given.

The red was over the top but then you have to think of the ref being put in that position. It happens.

It’s more a failing of the rules. I mean why are we charged when essentially the players were actually protesting about something for which they were actually found to be right?

Still it’s a nice little 40k for the FA Christmas party fund I guess

      (Quote)

  43. On the performance I’m not overly concerned as I believe we’re playing better now than we have for ages. We can control a game, cause issues in attack and threaten.

It’s at the back we struggle. Colo is taking flak for a lot of it but look at other areas. Janmaat is often out of the game halfway up the pitch as the attack breaks down and nobody steps in to cover him, mainly Sissoko.

      (Quote)

  44. So my question then is this… What happens to the ref? He has been proven wrong. He basically cost us 3 points with his proven error. If that was a pen, and I’m not going into if it was or not, then Cattermole on Gini must have been a pen. I think it was. So that’s 2 errors, then no yellows at all for Cattermole and Colback left on crutches, so that’s probably at least 4 serious errors… And nothing happens to the ref? He should be fined heavily and stopped from refereeing for a number of games. At least 3 game ban.

      (Quote)

  45. At the risk of going against the grain, I don’t blame the ref for his decision. We all have benefit of action replayed, slow mo and multiple angles on challenges – the ref gets a split second.
In my opinion there was no reason for Colo to be SO forceful in that challenge. Granted Fletcher went over like he’d been shot, but Colo has the experience to know better than to make a challenge like that in the box.
All he needed to do was shield the ball and protect his keeper – who was clearly getting to the ball first. Let Fletcher shove you in the back instead & win the freekick or get him possibly booked instead.

      (Quote)

  46. Sharpy: unless Trelford Mills Madley somehow had superman vision and depth perception I don’t understand how he knew Elliot wouldn’t get to that ball. It is also not like he played a blinder for the rest of the game either. If you allow Cattermole to run riot then you are not doing your job. He warned him twice and didn’t issue a yellow card. Cattermole was diving into tackles all day.

Dubai Toon: he will probably get the same punishment as Howard Webb who missed the kung fu kick by De Jong in the World Cup Final FFS 🙂 He then reffed in the next World Cup as well. Maybe if there had been a decapitation in Brasil he might have given a yellow.

Webb was a Policeman as well 🙂

      (Quote)

  47. Eric – I’m not saying the ref had a good game, and I said decision not decisions. But as you watched that challenge really time, before the replays – how many peoples first reaction was ‘oh ****, why have you done that man Colo’. I reckon most would have thought penalty & he could be off here like.

  48. Talking about coppers, I will tell you something that I might have said before but I bet you all knew happened anyway. I was back in Newcastle in April and had a few beers with someone I grew up with and played cricket with. He had been a sparky at Brenkley Colliery and then joined the Police when it was closed. For 10 years he would travel the country on Police surveillance of NUFC fans. His job was to infiltrate at the pubs where our fans were and to blend in. According to him, this involved having 6-8 pints before the game and to look for troublemakers. After a while he said he got known by the fans, especially for his signature wresting move to take the offenders down. When we got into Europe he took his wrestling move to Milan and Amsterdam and was pretty proud that he was getting a free holiday to places that he would probably never get to otherwise. His career ended with a heart attack and now a full pension at age 50. The most shocking thing he said was that the Police had a quota for arrests and if they hadn’t met it for the year they would just arrest the usual suspects and make up a charge. Sure, the regular hooligans had probably done something anyway, but he said the Police just fabricated the exact charge.

      (Quote)

  49. Sharpy: I was in a pub with about 20 NUFC fans and there was just shock when Coloccini got the red. Nobody could believe it.
