Ex-NUFC star fails medical as ‘heart defect’ scuppers shock move to Italy after 14-goal season

Just a few days ago, former Newcastle United striker Loic Remy was pictured in Italy and being presented as Benevento’s big new signing following their promotion back to Serie A.

The 33-year-old was set to pen a three-year-deal after his surprise release from Lille this summer, however it’s suddenly emerged from Sky Italy’s Gianluca Di Marzio that the deal is OFF.

This comes after the second part of the Frenchman’s medical is believed to have flagged up worrying “heart defect”, something which saw his proposed move to Liverpool fail in 2014 for the same reason.

Slow news day? Perhaps, but it’s interesting to see that he’s just actually matched his best goalscoring season since his stint at St James’ Park in 2013/14, scoring 14 goals (including one in the Champions League) for 4th place Lille.

With that in mind, you’d think many at LOSC would’ve been frustrated to see him leave on a free after 21 goals in 54 games with the Ligue 1 side and his best season in 6 years, however it may come as an even bigger blow for Italian minnows Benevento – a side who looked set to secure what would’ve been a shock move and decent coup had he passed medical checks.
