Newcastle United secured another win in our second pre-season of the summer against Championship side Barnsley today.
Andy Carroll made it two goals in two to give us a 1-0 lead at half-time at the club’s Benton training base, but that was cancelled out by a Tykes equaliser early in the second 45.
Jacob Murphy then did brilliantly to win a penalty with 15 minutes left on the clock and stepped up to convert the spot kick, handing us a 2-1 win.
Heres’ the XI Bruce went with to start, seeing Jeff Hendrick make his first outing in a black and white shirt:
(4-2-3-1): Darlow – Krafth, Fernandez, Clark, Dummett – Hayden, Shelvey – Hendrick, S Longstaff, Ritchie – Carroll.
The following changes then came from half-time onwards.
ON – Mark Gillespie, Florian Lejeune, Javier Manquillo, DeAndre Yedlin, Jacob Murphy, Christian Atsu, Miguel Almiron, Allan Saint-Maximin, Dan Barlaser and Henri Saivet
OFF – Karl Darlow, Federico Fernandez, Ciaran Clark, Paul Dummett, Matt Ritchie, Sean Longstaff, Jeff Hendrick, Andy Carroll, Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden.
Another win and some confidence boosting goals for Carroll and Murphy – not that this can detract from our desperate need to sign a striker!

I’ve always hoped Murphy would come good with him being an NUFC fan, I really hope he gets the chance to stick it out and battle for a place this season.
