✍️  Guimaraes signs! – Full details, official picture & Eddie Howe’s reaction

Newcastle United have announced the signing of Brazilian international Bruno Guimaraes!

The 24-year-old has agreed a four-and-a-half-year deal at St James’ Park and will wear shirt No 39 – the number of the taxi once driven by his father.

He arrives from Ligue 1 side Lyon, becoming our third signing of the January transfer window after Kieran Tripper and Chris Wood arrived from Atletico Madrid and Burnley, respectively.

The club say it’s an undisclosed fee, however Lyon have released a statement saying he’s cost us €50m (£42m) plus bonuses, suggesting this may be new club record signing for NUFC!

The highly-rated midfielder has recently been linked with big money moves to Juventus and Arsenal and was part of the Brazil side that won Olympic gold last August.

Here’s the club confirmation, followed by what he and Eddie Howe told NUFC.co.uk after sealing the move…

Eddie Howe on Guimaraes:

“Bruno is a hugely exciting talent and has been one of our primary targets so I’m delighted to secure him.

He strengthens the group immediately ready for the challenge ahead.

“He has been one of the standout performers in France and is a full international for Brazil so I have no doubt our supporters will really enjoy watching him.

We look forward to welcoming him to the club on his return from international duty.”

What a signing this looks to be. A real statement of intent and the sort of well rounded midfielder who can pick a pass, do the dirty work in front of our defence and break forward with the ball.

Welcome to the Toon, Bruno!

  1. Not to mention it will be easy for Geordies and Saudis alike to put his name on a shirt – was “Bruno G” at Lyon (the last name is a bit hard to spell 🙂 )
