£6m deal now in serious doubt with club unlikely to trigger transfer clause – The Athletic

It looks like Martin Dubravka’s stint at Manchester United could be pretty short lived.

According to The Athletic, the Red Devils are highly unlikely to sign the Slovakian on a permanent deal following his deadline day loan move to Old Trafford.

An obligation to buy at £6m exists in his current deal, but this clause will only be activated if he starts a ‘high’ number of Premier League games – meaning a permanent move now looks highly unlikely to happen.

He’s behind David De Gea in the pecking order and hasn’t even travelled with their squad to face Sheriff in the Europa League tonight, so his ‘dream’ move hasn’t gone to plan so far, with him also benched for last week’s defeat to Real Sociedad.

Saying that, it seems most of us saw this coming. The 33-year-old left Newcastle after falling behind new number one Nick Pope, yet he’s joined a club where game time will be equally hard to come by.

The likelihood he returns next summer makes a mockery of our decision to do them a favour – especially when you consider how they behaved in negotiations for Jesse Lingard last January – but it seems Eddie Howe preferred to keep the player happy and sanction a move he was clearly pushing for.

Here’s a snippet from The Athletic’s piece, which explains why it’s highly unlikely that Manchester United trigger the £6m clause included in Dubravka’s loan move:

Dubravka appealed because he is a Slovakia international and Premier League No 1 last season, and wanted a switch after falling behind Nick Pope in the pecking order at Newcastle.

He has arrived on loan for a fee of £2million ($2.3m), which turns into an additional £6m obligation if he starts a certain number of Premier League matches. But the figure is high and unlikely to be triggered.

  1. Can’t even understand why we did any business with them after the Lingard fiasco.
Dubravka has gone down in my estimation….prefers to warm his backside on the bench at Man Utd rather than us.
Could understand if he was going for first team football.
