Early contender for most ridiculous comment of 2023 as pundit makes Eddie Howe claim

Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has made a ridiculous claim that Newcastle should consider ‘sacking’ Eddie Howe if we qualify for the Champions League this season.

Since his arrival, Howe has turned a relegation threatened team into top-four contenders in just 12 months and will be in serious consideration for manager of the season should we keep this form up.

But speaking on our long-term future, the ex-Liverpool and Nottingham Forest man believes that our ownership may want to bring someone new in with ‘pre-established European pedigree’.

As a fairly young manager, Howe still has a long way to go in his career and to deny him the opportunity of managing in Europe and developing his game even further just seems absolutely nonsensical.

The fact Collymore suggested this because of our ownership, who have proven to be very level-headed and have backed Howe since day one, suggests how truly out of the loop he is.

There is no doubt that the 45-year-old head coach will be given the opportunity to take this club as far as he can and hopefully remain in charge for a very long time. Here is what Collymore had to say on the situation:

“Newcastle United may be one of the only clubs able to hire and fire their manager at will and that’s because they have endless amounts of money to spend.

“Don’t get me wrong, I know Eddie Howe is doing an absolutely phenomenal job there but if the Magpies do qualify for the Champions League, I’m sure the owners will at least have the conversation about sacking him and bringing someone else in with pre-established European pedigree.

“In terms of Howe’s experience of managing a club competing on multiple domestic and European fronts, he doesn’t have any. Maybe the owners will say ‘he’s done so well, we’ll give him a chance’ – but I do really believe they’ll consider parting ways in favour of a manager who has the experience that Howe lacks because if you’re Newcastle United and suddenly you’re in the Champions League, why on earth wouldn’t you consider going out and trying to bring in a top, top manager?

“I think it’d be incredibly naive of Newcastle United’s owners to not consider sacking Howe if they qualified for the Champions League.”

  1. Another buffoon pundit who talks rubbish, these so called experienced managers he’s talking about can only win things by spending vast amounts on star players . Howe will break that mold in the same way as another englishman who built his team his way. Brian Clough the only real coach who gained European cups. Hwtl

  2. Collymore needs to stick with what he knows – beating up women and watching people have sex in cars.

  3. Stan Collymore & Gabby Agbonglahor are the two most stupid pundits on the planet, why are they given air space?

  4. People like this wife beating POS keep overlooking the same thing. We don’t need a “top top manager” because we already have a top top top top top manager. Mourhino wouldn’t have got us top 3 without a billion to spend and triple the wage bill, and probably not even then.

  5. Reynolds claims Collymore said that he

    What Collymore ACTUALLY said
“I’m sure the owners will at least have the conversation about sacking him and bringing someone else in with pre-established European pedigree.”

Of course they will have the conversation, you imbecile. They will discuss every possibility to try to improve the clubs results.
At the end of the season it would go something like “do we think Eddie is doing a good enough job, or should we get someone else who has actually managed in Europe?”
“He’s doing a great job – keep him!”
“OK, all agreed , we keep Eddie!”
It would be commercial negligence if they didn’t at least have the conversation.
I suppose that’s the difference between a fan and someone who has actually run a business.

  6. Big companies generally like to be prepared for just about any eventuality they can think of.
When I worked for a large company overseas, once a year we would have to complete a contract analysis report which included things like Risk Analysis. In that report we would identify possible issues with the contract in the coming year. It would include things like what we would do in the event of a natural disaster, or if the country we were in got in a war with the UK, or what would our options be if the pound crashed, or strengthened (depending on the currency we were paid in.
We would also prepare a succession planning document, the idea of which was to identify available replacements in case a critical member of staff (Contract Manager, Head of Engineering, etc) was hit by a bus tomorrow.
With very few exceptions, we were not actually HOPING they would be hit by a bus, it was just a question that had to be asked, JUST IN CASE.
It’s something you do as a matter of course.
