At one stage last night, Spurs looked set to close the gap between themselves (5th) and Newcastle (4th) to just two points.
After two quickfire goals at the Etihad, they went into the second half 2-0 up over Man City, only to lose 4-2 in the end thanks to a second half masterclass from Pep Guardiola’s men.
With that result in mind, Newcastle now have a huge chance to extend the gap between 4th and the chasing pack, knowing a win over Crystal Palace would send us EIGHT points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham after 20 games played.
What’s more, Manchester United threw away two points ahead of their trip to Arsenal as Palace’s Michael Olise scored a 90th minute equaliser on Wednesday, while ‘big six’ contenders Liverpool (9th) and Chelsea (10th) will take points off each other this weekend as they meet in Saturday’s early kick off at Anfield.
Here’s an updated Premier League table following Spurs’ 4-2 defeat from a position of real promise last night, followed by the fixtures to look out for this weekend:
Wednesday 18th January: Crystal Palace 1-1 Man Utd
Thursday 19th January: Man City 3-2 Spurs
Saturday 21st January: Liverpool vs Chelsea (12.30pm) – Crystal Palace vs Newcastle (5.30pm)
Sunday 22nd January: Arsenal vs Man Utd (4.30pm)
Monday 23rd January: Fulham vs Tottenham (8pm)
After Tottenham’s tough trip to Fulham (6th) on Monday, they face another Premier League meeting with Man City over the same weekend we face an out of sorts West Ham at St James’ Park.
So, when you consider the fixtures, our form and the ongoing struggles of Spurs, Liverpool and Chelsea, tomorrow’s trip to Palace is a huge chance to boost our top four hopes and extend the gap to eight.
