Newcastle’s Champions League hopes handed fresh boost as top-four rivals reveal injury blow

Top-four rivals Manchester United have announced that Marcus Rashford looks set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up a muscle injury.

With 28 goals and 10 assists in all competitions this season, the England international has been their talisman of late, but was forced off in the closing stages of their 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday.

The club says he’ll be unavailable for ‘a few games’, putting him at risk of missing crucial league games against Nottingham Forest, Brighton an Spurs, with Luke Shaw also ruled out of tomorrow’s Europa League clash with Sevilla.

With the stakes so high and the gap between 3rd and 5th so small – just three points as things stand – this could be a real blow for the Red Devils and good news for Newcastle in our pursuit of Champions League football, with many believing it’s now a three-horse race between ourselves, Man Utd and Spurs for those final two spots.

Spurs are also managing a long injury list, with Rodrigo Bentancur, Emerson Royal, Ben Davies, Yves Bissouma and Ryan Sessegnon all sidelined.

Here’s Man Utd’s official update on Rashford’s injury situation:

Marcus Rashford will be unavailable for Thursday’s UEFA Europa League quarter-final game against Sevilla because of a muscle injury.

‘The forward was withdrawn in the 80th minute of Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League win over Everton at Old Trafford and immediately headed to the dressing room for treatment.

Subsequent assessment of the injury suggested that Marcus will be unavailable for a few games, but is expected to be back for the season run-in.

‘The England international’s absence is a disappointment given his red-hot form this season, with 28 goals in all competitions. But there will also be relief about the prospect of his return for important games in the final weeks of the season.’
