Newcastle United are fighting to finish in the Premier League top four. With just a few games remaining, the Magpies are trying to hold off Manchester United and Liverpool from overtaking them in the standings. Manager Eddie Howe has done wonders in his first full season in charge of the club, but the season will come down to the final three matches.
News and rumours are already swirling over the potential player signings Newcastle could make if they finish in the top four. A large transfer kitty could be at Howe’s disposal if the team can qualify for next season’s Champions League. The squad would need upgrades in a few areas to fight on four fronts in 2023-24. Moreover, the Magpies need some new high-calibre players as they transition from a low-to-mid-table team into one of the Premier League’s elite clubs.
Newcastle have three massive Premier League games left this season. Fans are debating whether the Magpies can obtain enough points to hold onto a top-four place. Fans can use the bonus registo Betano code before betting on Newcastle’s remaining league fixtures.
One player rumoured as a potential target is current Chelsea attacking midfielder, Joao Felix. The Blues signed Felix in January on loan from Atletico Madrid. The Portuguese player was surplus to requirements in Madrid having failed to fit into the defensive style of Diego Simeone’s team.
Felix has looked impressive for Chelsea, although his goals and assists have left plenty to be desired. The Portugal international has three goals and zero assists in 14 Premier League appearances. His current transfer value is €50 million. Atletico paid Benfica €127m for Felix in 2019. The Spanish club would want to recoup some of that fee. Chelsea paid €11m in a loan fee for Felix’s signature in the second half of the campaign. Chelsea are rumoured to make the deal permanent, but they would likely want to see the transfer asking price come down.
RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai is another player Newcastle are tracking. The Hungarian international joined RB Leipzig in 2021 but dealt with injuries for months before making his debut.
Since arriving in Leipzig Szoboszlai has played 88 times, scoring 18 goals and assisting 22. Szoboszlai came through the Red Bull set up previously playing for FC Leifering and Red Bull Salzburg. At one point this season, Szoboszlai assists six goals in five consecutive Bundesliga matches. Szoboszlai would help ease the burden on Bruno Guimaraes as the team’s main creative player. Szoboszlai is valued at €40m. His contract runs until 2026, and Salzburg will receive 20% of any sale by Leipzig.
Left-back is a position Newcastle are desperate to address this offseason. While Dan Burn has been a solid starter, the club is looking for a left-back to equal the play of right-back Keiran Trippier. The club signed Matt Targett in 2022, but he has struggled to hold down the position.
Arsenal’s Keiran Tierney is likely to join the club in the offseason. Tierney has had a limited role at the Emirates this season. The Scottish defender is valued at around £25m. Tierney arrived at Arsenal in 2019 but has struggled to make regular appearances due to injuries and form issues. This season, Tierney has appeared in 25 matches for the Gunners.
