From France: Newcastle join Arsenal and West Ham in race to sign Ligue 1 star

According to reports in France, Newcastle have entered the race to sign Monaco midfielder Youssouf Fofana.

This comes from L’Équipe, who claim that ourselves and Arsenal are showing interest in the 24-year-old; who has been identified by West Ham as a potential replacement for Declan Rice.

The defensive midfielder is expected to leave the Ligue 1 side this summer should a ‘reasonable offer’ arrive. With the player entering the final 12 months of his contract at Monaco, it’s thought a bid in the region of £30m would be accepted.

This isn’t the first time we’ve been linked with a move for the 6ft 1′ French international, as Football Transfers released an exclusive last week confirming our interest.

It remains to be seen how the imminent signing of Sandro Tonali impacts our pursuit of another midfielder, but reports suggest we are still in the market for an out and out No 6 able to play in that deeper role. As The Atheltic revealed over the weekend, Tonali is expected to play on the right side of our midfield three.

Fofana has been capped 10 times by his country and made eight appearances in the Europa League last season, playing 47 times in all competitions.
