New Sandro Tonali fee emerges – Newcastle set to sign AC Milan star for surprise price?

Newcastle look set to sign Sandro Tonali for £52m plus bonuses, according to a new report from The Mail.

Last week, both Fabrizio Romano and The Athletic said we’d struck a deal with AC Milan for around €70m plus bonuses of €5m; which is around £60m plus £4m in add-ons.

However, it’s now claimed we’ll pay more like £52m plus add-ons. This comes after The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards revealed last night that the figures being mentioned were more than we’re expected to spend on his signature.

The Mail also reveals that Milan had been looking for a bigger fee for the 23-year-old and had previously discussed a part-exchange deal with Chelsea; who have ended up flogging most of their fringe players to the Saudi Pro League.

The Athletic revealed last Tuesday that our opening bid was €50m (£43m), so a fee in the region of £52m could actually make more sense? Either way, it can only be good news for the club if we have negotiated a lower price for the Italian maestro.

Tonali is currently away at the U21 European Championships – where he’s managed two assists in two games for Italy – and is expected to be announced as a Newcastle United player later this week.
