Andy Howe’s scout report reveals exciting notes on Sandro Tonali & key reason he was signed

With Sandro Tonali now on Tyneside and officially a Newcastle United player, it’s been interesting to read reports on Eddie Howe’s plan for the Italian midfielder.

According to The Telegraph, it was Andy Howe – Eddie Howe’s nephew – who led scouting reports on the player, with their piece revealing some of the notes collected on the 23-year-old talent.

They reveal that we wanted another ‘technician’ in the middle of the park, but one who could also bring ‘athleticism’ and ‘vision’ to the side. Tonali ticked all of those boxes, with Andy Howe’s reports also praising his ability to ‘take the ball under pressure’ and ‘play through opposition lines.’

It’s believed the Italian will help us ‘unlock tight defences’ who come to St James’ Park to sit deep and frustrate, but also cope well when more adventurous sides press from the off. Not only is he press-resistant in possession, it’s believed scouts also hailed his ability to press, with him often leading the charge at AC Milan, highlighting his ability on and off the ball.

It’s also hoped he and Bruno Guimaraes can compliment each other and interchange in games, making it tough for opposition midfields to pick up our ball-playing duo who may often drift from No 6 to No 8.

His passing range, pinpoint accuracy, quality from set pieces and ability to move the ball forward also impressed scouts. It’s thought he will need to become ‘stronger and fitter’ to cope in Eddie Howe’s high-energy side, but plans are already in place to raise these levels over pre-season.
