Newcastle facing fresh competition to sign Kalvin Phillips despite Man City boost – Report

Football Insider are reporting that West Ham have joined Newcastle United in the race to sign Manchester City outcast Kalvin Phillips in January.

Phillips has been heavily linked with a winter move to St James’ Park, with a loan move touted to hand him more game time ahead of the Euros in Germany next year.

It seemed like Newcastle were the frontrunners for the 27-year-old, but it’s believed West Ham have now thrown their hat into the ring after Man City made it known he is free to leave.

The Hammers are currently having issues with the long-term future of Tomas Soucek, whose contract expires in 2024, and may view Phillips as an ideal replacement. They also had a bid rejected for the England international prior to his £42m move to Man City last summer.

It’s clear his future lies away from the Etihad, but it remains to be seen if we’ll pursue the midfielder, with Al-Hilal’s Ruben Neves another option now the Premier League vote for ban on related-party loans went in our favour.
