Tottenham Hotspur vs Newcastle United preview, team news, tickets & prediction

Spurs will continue their surprise title charge in a top-table clash with top-four hopefuls Newcastle United when they lock horns on match week 16 of the 2023/2024 Premier League season.

The Tottenham Hotspur stadium will be the stage for this fixture between two clubs competing at the very top of the League. It is a match which will likely have huge ramifications on the Champions League places as well as the title race, so it is one match to keep an eye on.

Life under Ange Postecoglou is good. At least, so far, it has been. After an almost four-year period where the team played less than desirable football and had deviated from the Tottenham Hotspur way they had been accustomed to previously, the feeling of the old Tottenham has been restored at the club.

When he was asked about what he did to change the mentality around, Postecoglou credited the players and their willingness to adapt quickly to a new, upbeat style of play almost immediately.

“It is a credit to the players; they’ve really bought into it, and they’re really tight as a group.

“You see that because of the manner we are winning games. It is not like they’ve been easy. Any of them. Apart from the football, which I think has been good, the resilience and the character, they want to change the destiny of this football club, and that’s what they’re trying to do.”

It’s easy to say that the lack of European football this season has been a contributing factor (no European games equals more time on the training pitch to adapt to Ange’s style). It has, but the improvements to the team were already apparent in the preseason, with the Spurs growing from strength to strength from that point forward.

Last season, Newcastle were able to beat Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, but the north London outfit will be looking to show the Geordies that things are different this time around.

Even with the presence of UEFA Champions League football, Newcastle have avoided a significant drop-off. A solid defensive record, a number of clean sheets and a string of good results have shown them to not only be one of the best teams in the country but also on the continent as a whole.

Last season, Eddie Howe’s men were seen as overachievers, but in this campaign, they are proving that this once-great club has risen from the ashes and is a part of Europe’s elite again.

The match against Tottenham will be a difficult one, considering how good Spurs are, but the Magpies will not back down either in what promises to be an intense affair.

Team news

Manor Solomon and Ivan Perisic are the longer-term absentees with Meniscus and Cruciate Ligament injuries, respectively. They will not be expected to feature for Spurs until next year at the very least. Club captain Hugo Lloris, Ryan Sessengnon, Alfie Whiteman and starting left-back Destiny Udogie are the other players who are on the injury list at this time.

For Newcastle, Eliot Anderson, Harvey Barnes, Alexander Isak, Jacob Murphy, and Sven Botman are currently injured.

Lineups

Spurs will once again run out with their strongest team, barring any injuries or suspensions. Micky Van De Ven, who has taken to Premier League football like a fish to water, will continue his strong central defensive partnership with Christian Romero. At the same time, Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr will form their formidable midfield partnership.

They will be hoping that Son Heung-Min and James Maddison are in top form against Newcastle, as their offensive contributions will be critical for the end product.

Tottenham Hotspur: Vicario, Porro, Romero, Van De Ven; Davies, Sarr, Bissouma, Kulusevski; Maddison, Richarlison, Son.

Newcastle will be looking for their second straight-away win at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium and will run out with a team strong enough to make that happen.

Their assist machine, Keiran Trippier, will be starting from right back as he usually does, while Bruno Guimaraes will partner with Joelinton and Sean Longstaff in midfield.

After the rollercoaster of a season that was for Anthony Gordon, the young English forward is finally showing his prodigious talent. He has become a key player in the Newcastle set-up and will look to be a constant threat down the left for the Magpies.

Newcastle: Pope; Trippier, Schar, Lascelles, Burn, Joelinton, Guimaraes, Longstaff, Almiron, Wilson, Gordon

Prediction

While Spurs will try to control possession of the ball and pick out holes in the Newcastle defence with their passing, Newcastle will be looking to press with intensity, force turnovers higher up the pitch and counterattack at pace.

Both teams play with an urgency and intensity that makes this clash a must-watch for neutrals.
