Alan Shearer is backing Newcastle United to “bounce back” from two defeats last week, feeling “more than confident” we’ll beat AC Milan.
Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, our former number nine also believes Borussia Dortmund will “do a job” on PSG in tonight’s other Group F fixture. Should the Ligue 1 side fail to win in Germany, we would finish 2nd in the group and progress into the knockout stages with a victory over Milan.
Shearer think we are “totally different” on home turf and hopes we’ll be boosted by the return of Sean Longstaff and Callum Wilson, feeling the crowd will also have a big role to play in what he expects be an “electric” atmosphere under the lights.
Here’s what he’s had to say ahead of the 8pm kick-off at St James’ Park:
“It’s a huge, huge game. It’s totally different when you’re at home – you’ve got the backing of the crowd and they’ve got two players back in Longstaff and Wilson, who came on for the last 25 minutes (as Spurs) and looked decent, so I imagine they’ll be involved.
“Milan have got a few injuries as well, so I’m more than confident that Newcastle will bounce back (with a win) on Wednesday. The atmosphere will be electric again.
“Of course it’s not in their hands – even if they win it might not be enough – but the likelihood is that Dortmund do a job on PSG, because I’m not sure they are a great team.”
Let’s hope he’s right!
