On the brink?

The neverending story of Newcastle United.
It was all going swimmingly until the start of the transfer window….

As the 2011/12 Premier League Season approaches kick off the neverending story of Newcastle United has yet again taken another twist and turn.

With the somewhat surprising news that Joey Barton has been transfer listed but as a free has set Toon fans into a frenzy of What? Why? Who?

The fluctuation of debate is diverse, from people asking themselves and others why has Joey come out and said this only now so close to the season beginning, to why should footballers be treated any differently from any other normal person in the workplace slagging off their employer.

Grumblings will have now been heard nationwide, whether that is from the TV, Radio, and Internet message boards and word of mouth – Newcastle United is yet again the talking point of football in the media. As fans start to prepare for another bashing from opposing teams the club yet again can only muster up a two-line statement on the situation, which as usual will outrage the majority as we have seen in the past that transparency in communication is a very major weak point for Mr Ashley and supposed Chief Executive Derek Llambias.

It’s not the first time that the transfer window has brought Newcastle to the forefront of unrest between players and owners. We all know what happened in January so lets leave that as is. The summer transfer has led us to the departure of Kevin Nolan with both player and club coming out with conflicting opinions on who is to blame. Then we have the situation with money. Is it there to spend on players? Or are we being conned into a false sense of hope?

It seems to me that players within the squad are more than happy to keep their mouths shut but then you will always have the stronger characters that are willing to stand up for what they believe. Joey Barton and Jose Enrique have vented their frustrations at a time when as a club you would think we should be rallying together for what is likely to be a difficult and hard slog of a second season in the Premier League.

You also have players such as Wayne Routledge who has kept quiet whilst away on loan duty then come back to training with a frown of how he is being treated and again sort of speaking his mind on twitter by agreeing with Enrique. You begin to ask yourself what is really happening behind the scenes and are we ever likely to find out?

I ask, are people going to forget this little Joey Barton debacle if quality signings are made within the next few weeks to support our seemingly thin squad after the increasing number of unhappy players leaving? Well, if recent weeks are to go by, then we will have fewer players than what we started with even with the four signings.

However, you have to hand it to Newcastle United fans, as a group we are always going stick together with our team now matter how divided opinion is. But people will argue and argue until their blood pressure reaches the sky about our owner and his running of our beloved club but being on the brink of another disaster is always around the corner for Newcastle no matter how hard we try to forget past misdemeanours and get on with what we are to believe as a happy ‘well spirited bunch of lads’.

Thanks to Ethi-toon for sending this in.

  1. I can deal with the likes of Barton, Enrique and Routledge going, its when Graham Carr leaves thats when i’ll start to believe we’ll be truly fook’ed

  2. Some of these middle order players should be brought down a peg or two. David Pleat has said on TalkSport today that this current situation cannot continue and I think he’s right. Only the top 5 clubs can afford to be held over a barrel by top players, the rest will find it impossible, the British lads will be replaced by foreign imports and the Brits will have nowhere to go because championship clubs cannot pay the wages. I think this could be the start of a major re-balancing in football…..clubs have had enough of paying hollywood wages to TV soap quality players

  3. Look, there are ton more crocked players available and after the window closes the squad can be filled out with frees. You can bet your last penny that MA will give AP enough to assure NUFC survive by a point or on goal difference – MA cannot afford the high cost of relegation. The clean out will be complete by next summer, and then the Lyon model will be in full swing unless the agents and healthy players blackball Newcastle.

  4. In amongst all this b0ll0cks some fans point the finger at the club, some at the management, some the board, and some at the player. Who knows whose bl00dy fault it is, and to be honest, who gives a fook. The fact remains that there is unrest at the club, otherwise nobody would be talking.

It doesn’t happen at any other club as frequently as ours, does it?

Sort it out Ashley, you fat useless cnt!

  5. HTB@2 I was thinking exactly the same myself about Graham Carr. Now Joeys saying he thinks he might hang around and see out his contract. What good is that for the fans and club he supposedly loves. He shouldn’t have a choice If it was up to me I would give him a written warning about his childish mutterings on twitter and if he continued I would sack him.Don’t get me wrong I can’t stand the current ownership,I think they are slimier than a bucket of snot and don’t trust them at all ,but the longer Barton hangs around taking the pi$$ will do nothing but harm for the club. As far as Pardew is concerned to say it’s a shame for him as some people have said and it as nothing to do with him is a joke.He as been in cahoots with them leading up to the sacking of Houghton and as been ever since.

You really haven’t thought this through have?

I’ve said for months we won’t attract a decent striker because we don’t pay good enough wages. Strikers quite rightly demand bigger wages as goal scorers are a premium.

Unless we break our wage structure we will not get one and if anyone can’t see it then they are
    in fantasy land.

That is why I scoffed when the dreamers believed we would get Gervinho, gameiro and zoggy.

You clearly believe we will get a decent striker but I’m afraid you’re wrong. The players out of contract, injury prone players and disgruntled players appear to have been snapped up already, by us.

So why don’t you get realistic and face the obvious we won’t pay enough to attract a decent striker.

  18. has non of u ever thought about what Joey is playing at. First overall, with now beeing a free agent he can get any club and demand a nice sign on fee as no transfer fee is envolved. If no suitable offer comes in for him then of course he will stay. The only other option for us to get rid of him and stop distracting the squad would be we pay off his contract aprox 2.5 mill if we want him out now. This then still leaves him a free agent collected 2.5 mil as indemnity payment and on top for any club he sings on for he gets a hefty sign on fee and a decent wage. Joey is not daft he knows how to play his cards.

shrews mag that was possibly one of the most stupid comments i have ever read.

    1) forget astronomical amounts bla bla bs u & others go on about. im a semi pro player – think im ok at football. I get couple hundred a week. You may now not shrew but it is not easy to be a pro footballer 😯 and to get a cap for your country. Whatever he is on its the going rate.. stop comparing a footballers salary to ours – filmstars and other sportsmen would laugh at JB’s salary.

    2) are you a proffesional in any way shape or form shrews mag? well if your boss is a liar and one that you find to be abhorent to you as an employee then you have rights to express that disgust (especially if you are good at the job you do and can get employment elsewhere 😆 ) .

And lets be fair, what has he really said that constitutes gross misconduct? Nothing. Hence he will win his appeal over his fine and MA has no ground to sack him.

  21. I love how people take credit for “predicting” Barton would sold as if that wasn’t clear at the beginning of the window when he didn’t get a new contract.

I think most expected Barton and Enrique to go, I think we also expected a few youhng, inexpensive talen to come in (which has happened).

I think the only real surprises of the window are selling Nolan and not spending big on a top-notch striker. They have another month to do it, though I’m losing patience.

  22. if i told you last august we would have in a years time sacked hughton, sold carroll, nolan, barton and enrique would you have believed me?

  23. For me this isnt even about JB. This was before JB, before Carroll, before Hughton, before Relegation, before Alan Shearer, before Kinnear, before the court case, before keegan, before wise, before jiminez,- when Chris Mort left we lost as a club a sane voice to the owner. DL on the other hand – well, you know what im gonna say on him.. 😥

MA as a person I actually deep down dont think is a complete tool (my heart says he is) my head doesnt. I think he needs a Mort like figure there again to help him – to connect to the fans. Deep down I think he wants us to like him – but as long as DL is there…ne fookin chance.

ps – Bobby and the train fairplay to you all. Ive decided that there is no such thing as a ‘pro ashley; newcastle fan. It makes no sense. Stardust and the rest must be either jokers, or 10 year old ‘newcastle fans’ that live in somerset or somit like that.

When I was at St.James last year we as toon fans sang “get out of our club”.

I never heard, “if it wasnt for Ash, we wouldnt exist” 😀

      (Quote)

  24. We all know the financial climate – Everton (kenwright) has been trying to sell for ever – and cant.
We may be stuck with Ash for longer than we all want – we need to think of a way as fans to get him to listen to us. Boycott? Protests? Set up a serious group? Kidnapp DL?

I dunno, however MA is not going anywhere in long term – and as long as he is acting the way he is now its going to pain me supporting them.

I wish Sir Bobby was here – dunno what he could do – but we need a character like him to unite the toon, we really do. 🙁

  25. doitforsirbobby – congratulations on the semi pro thing … but forgive me for asking … what’s that got to do with anything ?? Do you feel it raises the quality of your comment ??

I am fully aware that a player gets paid the going rate … nothing remarkable about that … so what??

As Bobby said earlier how do you know that Ashely is in the wrong here ?? As his employer he has never as far as I am aware slagged him off … or retained his weekly pay cheque … unless you know different .

I was simply saying that we are all different. I would be happy to play the game I love for a fair and honest wage … maybe as a semi pro you wouldn’t 😕

      (Quote)

  26. semi pro thing is more to say money has absoulutely nothing to do with it so dont use it an argument. its silly. of course we would all pay to play for the toon but thats not the point is it? these are proffesionals who get PROFFESIONAL wages. Anyway – we get it, you dont like JB. Happy for you sunshine. Though you really need to look at the bigger picture..

  33. I think we need to take a step back and look at just one year ago. Back then most of the same people were doom-mongering about how we were going straight back down, etc.

90 minutes into the new year, we’d thrashed Villa 6-0 and everything was rosy.

My gut feel is that we’re stronger both in terms of playing ability and political stability now, as (hopefully) the last few hissy-fit merchants are given their marching orders and talent like Gosling comes through to show how it’s done.

I still worry about the striker and LB posts, but I do believe the club are still on that and if they fail it won’t be for a lack of trying… or even willingness to spend money.

I also worry about having lost the core of the team and whether the new boys will run around like headless chickens when more stable and organised teams come at them… like Arsenal.

But are we stronger than last year?

Out: Nolan, who wouldn’t have got a start anyway. Barton, who’s not as good as his hype and can be replaced, and probably Jose, who I think can be excused for his wish to leave, if not his daft twattering.

Additions: Benny, Gosling, Cabaye, Marveaux, Albeid, Ba.

So – yes, we are very weak at LB and could do with another striker, but we’re hardly thin there so much as lacking quality.

Overall, I think we are stronger, but it’s impossible to tell. It all comes down to whether AP can get them playing as a team.

      (Quote)

  34. MDS, its a little disingenuous to say ‘most’ predicted Barton would go.
Many of the self proclaimed ‘positive’, ‘real fans’ were telling us that they had a sneaking suspicion that Barton would see out his contact and then accept an extension later. They also said they felt Enrique would change his mind once he saw the new players in action and once we got a new, classy striker in.
It’s like the way ‘most’ fans knew Gervinho and Gameiro were never really coming – after the event! They were actually all telling us to ‘just be patient’ and they were including them in their ‘fantasy’ ups along with Barnetta MBengue and several others.

They are the ones who initially said we would definitely buy some players with the £35m, then as it became less and less likely, said we had already spent it on agents fees and wages. Then suggested anyone who said that we clearly had spent next to nothing was mad and just wanted to waste £35m on has-beens like Owen.
Talk about the Emperors New Clothes!

I’m all for people changing their mind. I’m all for people facing up to what must be quite a disappointing reality, and i appreciate how uncomfortable that must be. I think perhaps a little humility might fare better than pretending that deep down everyone knew what was going on at the time.

      (Quote)

  35. Only God knows until it starts.

We bloody needed a stronger team WITH jb, Nolan, Carroll and Jose. Theyve all gone so mathematically we need at LEAST another 5 players to add to SM, YC, and DB (albeid i think will play reserves this year. decent performance against darlo doesnt mean he can cut it against likes of de jong and wilshere) but again – only God knows.

We need a couple LB;s (if Jose has now gone), RB, RW, STRIKER.

    Anyone disagree?

      (Quote)

  36. I’m guessing that erdinc is not coming then. More worried if we are going to get any more forwards in as our list must be pretty much exhusted now 😐

      (Quote)

  37. @46- I’m glad you have such insight into my thinking but in reality there is a big difference from saying Barton will definately be here to “I hope both sides can work it out” just as there is a difference in saying “we are going to sign gervinho” and “I really hope we sign Gervinho, he looks class” etc. Same goes for Enrique, I certainly held out hope in my gut, but never would have wagered coin on it.

Again, not sure who said we would “definitley” spend the 35M. I think a lot, including myself expected that we would spend a good chunk of it. Toonsy ran a poll on how much we thought would get spent and I beleive I voted for the 15-20M line. I think the debate over the 35M was properly framed by those who perhaps worried about amounts spent rathe than squad improvement.

  39. You might be right about improved political stability.
After all, the new players are less likely to appreciate what a bunch of coniving liars we have running the club.

Maybe when Cabaye realises we won’t get into Europe in his lifetime while Ashley is in charge.

(corluka also) all of the IMO are better than simpson.

then again who am i kidding – they would cost money

    so fcukin depressing 🙁

      (Quote)

  42. I agree with that too, although you could argue we need two RBs and another CB we have to be realistic and think about whether we’d be better with one really good (therefore expensive in fees and salary) striker and sticking with one specialist RB. That’s the kind of decision they have to work out.

I will be pretty nervous if we get no more players in the next month, but I’d be surprised if that’s the case. Activity always goes a bit mental in August you can’t say the recruitment team didn’t get off to a great start and do good business before all the holidays and pre-season tours killed the market.

I just hope people are realistic and don’t get on the club’s back again if they don’t sign Eto’o. We’re just not there yet, and there’s a reason Liverpool paid through the nose for Judas – good number nines are like hens’ teeth.

Talking of Avatar, anyone else ever wonder if he’s no good without Nolan and vice versa? He only scored in 2 out of 7 games since the move, and Nolan went off the boil too.

  44. If the club had a decent and honest approach with both the supporters and its own players I would not be too concerned with the loss of both Barton and Nolan. Every time I read something coming from players however it indicates quite the opposite. Clearly one of the biggest problems at the club is Derek Llambias. He takes his cues from Ashley only. Until we see Llambias leave and an experienced football man put in his place I don’t see any possible improvement. The only way Llambias would be removed from his position would be if we were relegated again. God forbid that happens but with our current leadership (or lack thereof) the risk will always be there.

  46. Stuart – yep, I’m ok..ish.. with CBs. It could be improved upon, but with Kadar available I think we’re ok. Other bits look like better use of limited resources. Besides – they did ok last year. People say we shipped too many goals, but I think we were about mid-table in that respect, and there’s an inevitable compromise between goals scored and conceded. We scored loads, which means we have to accept we’re more open at the back.

      (Quote)

  47. Geordie 2 – totally agree. I wish people would focus on that problem rather than expenditure, which is a red herring. So is kicking out the poison that is Barton – it’s what any business has to do.

I hate what Joey did, as it’s damaged our recruitment chances and made us a laughing stock again, but there is some truth in what he, Jose and Nolan have said – the high court said as much over the KK fiasco. That is what people can get annoyed about if they like, but why now? And why do they think other owners are any better? Chelski was built on blood money, for chrissakes!

If we get more decent players by Sept 1st I’ll be happy; if not I’ll be concerned but not panicking. But I do believe one thing: if the right players are available and want to come here without us being ripped off in the process, they’ll be brought in. I’m just not sure they’re out there.

Yet so far we have been largely correct.

Apart from Spencer and a few others, who have said ‘enough is enough. Being positive is one thing but ignoring the evidence of your own eyes is another’ most of those who decried and ridiculed our opinions have just shifted the goalposts again.
Like I said I can respect someone who can admit to changing their mind or admit they were wrong.

Mostly what we get are a bunch of ‘good Germans’.

  52. Another example of the club’s unwillingness to communicate is the BBC survey of the cost of going to a football match in England. Every single club gave their ticket prices to be published except one, yes you guessed it Newcastle United. The club is now mired in a poisonous secrecy instigated by Ashley and carried out by Llambias. Only thieves and scoundrels conduct business this way. They have made several attempts to clear the air over the last few years but these have always been abject failures. They clearly will always resort to what they know best, when in doubt say nothing and let the supporters desperately look to the press for rumours, misinformation, and even outright lies instead of giving us an honest source of real information about the club. This clearly will never change given the current ownership. I will continue to support the team and ignore its management.

Somedays being told you are a doom-monger or a whinger or not a real fan is extremely irritating when all your are doing is giving an opinion on the state this club is being dragged down to by this shambolic cabal of liars.

I’m human and have human failings. Somedays I do get the urge to say ‘I told you so’, and mock, particularly when people who criticised our motives and have defended Ashley n the indefensible change the goalposts again. Most days I just feel sorry about what is happening to NUFC and wish there were ways we could get Ashley to either change his behaviours or sell up.

The problem he has (and yes, I know I keep posting this, but nobody’s challenged it yet) is that I don’t think his recruitment policy is compatible with his need to stop Joey, Jonas, Collo and Jose from leaving. Ashley’s strategy gets young, obscure, talent late in the window. Our top players, spooked by the AC debarcle, need to see known, quality signings in the first few weeks or they’re gone.
    Anyone else see that??

Whumpie i feel like giving you a hug pal 😛
