Toon bid £8m for Luuk de Jong

Doing a deal for de Jong?
Newcastle have made a bid of £8m (just shy of €10m) for FC Twente striker Luuk de Jong if reports in the local and national press are to be believed.

The 21-year-old Netherlands international has long been linked with Newcastle United and it would now appear, after his country’s elimination from EURO 2012, that the club have decided to test the water with a bid.

FC Twente are said to be looking for closer to £12m although once again we get back to the whole cash is king argument. Will Steve McClaren be tempted by thought of having a slightly lower fee up front so he can reinvest it in his team? Or would he prefer to wait for some of the cash like most other deals are structured?

Of course the news that we are actively pursuing a striker will fan the flames of the Demba Ba rumours once more and may even point towards to the fact that something has happened behind the scenes and that Ba has perhaps given an indication that he may indeed be off after all.

That is pure speculation on my part of course, but to me it seems strange that our club would be willing to spend what is a relatively large amount on a striker, which to me would suggest de Jong is eyed as being a starter. Yes I know we have more games next season with Europe and everything, but I still didn’t expect us to be willing to spend that amount on a striker.

For his part de Jong is a cracking not-so-little player with an impressive record in the Eredivisie and has racked up 59 goals in 119 appearances. Although his real breakthrough only came two seasons ago, it’s worth pointing out that since then he has scored 52 goals in 99 appearances.

The 21-year-old is tall (he stands at 6ft 2in), physical and can find the back of the net. He can improve and has years ahead of him in his career. An unused substitute for The Netherlands in all three EURO 2012 group games, de Jong has already represented his country seven times. Maybe they should have given him a go rather than sit him on the bench?

All in all, good stuff. Time will tell whether our bid is successful or not, but you never know, it might be. Alan Pardew and Steve McClaren get on – the former Middlesbrough manager was a guest of Pardew’s at the training ground not so long back remember – so perhaps the wally with the brolly may fancy doing us a favour?

We wont be the only club interested in de Jong though, which could be a problem, but then again I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how it all pans out.

  1. Sky reporting Lille reject £4m bid for Debuchy from Newcastle. 🙁

Twente want nearer 15m euros not the 10m we’ve offered. 😯

  2. I believe we have made bids, start low and work you way up to what you want to spend… Doesn’t ease the nerves of fans but it is good business..

  3. Liam .agree mate ,this has **** up written all over it. Watch the cash happy clubs snatch them from us now 👿

  4. Chin up Liam 😆
Don’t stress about things you can’t control.. Good to see we are active in the market tho

  5. Aussie ,It’s not our bids I have the problem with it’s the fact it’s made public , I wish it could all be sorted behind closed doors.

      (Quote)

  6. How do these bids become public.

We never end up signing the players when the bids become public knowledge because the Spuds and Liverpool then decide that players must be good because we are interested.

Hopefully this year they have no extra pull because they are in the same European Comp as us.

I think we have the advantage when it comes to French players too.

Dutch players I’d fancy would be drawn towards Spuds and London.

  7. I agree Kim, but when you have agents/owners/players wanting the best possible deal, you need as many bidders as possible… So it inevitably gets leaked to the press 👿

      (Quote)

  8. We got £7m for Enrique with six months left on his contract.

I would imagine, going on that, Debuchy will be worth around £5.5m-6m…

I would say our offer for De Jong is about right, I wouldn’t want us paying more than £10m.

      (Quote)

  9. I see Wigan have rejected an undisclosed bid from Chelsea for Moses ,why can’t our bids be undisclosed 👿

      (Quote)

  10. Roman has connections that’s why Kim… people can suddenly go missing if you know what I mean 😆

  11. £8m a sensible enough first offer, The say we want £12m, We offer to meet in the middle £10m up front maybe more attractive than spuds offering £12m in 4 installments over a year and they cant replace him properly ahead of next season.

Also not necesarily a sign Bas away, Best, Ranger, Lover and please god Xisco will be off leaving us with next to **** all back up for the strikers, Forster and Simpson should bring in a few million and Smith fecking off has lowered the wage bill, So De Jong after that may only cost us a few million and his wage wouldnt come close to matching the outgoing players.

    I am an eternal optimist mind… 🙁

      (Quote)

  12. To be fair kim, Dave whelans probably planning a press conference to announce to the world the fine details of the bid as we speak… 😉

  13. Aussie ,he’s a bit brighter but you never know when his next cluster of fits might pop up 🙁 he’s been home 11 days now ,they all missing him at day centre . Hopefully new antibiotics will sort out what ever is making him unstable as he’s off his food aswell ,unlike him that. Had 68 fits last week 🙄 only shorties ,max 20 seconds long ,but hell of a strain on the system all the same.If things don’t rapidly improve soon he will have to go in hospital for load of test like. O.k today so far so fingers crossed. Thanks for asking though. 😀

Those bids are solid and it is two players of great quality.

I hope we Can strengthen our defence even more, as i Think we need 2 FB and 1 CB.

I still Think we should get a DM to cover Tiote and maybe a striker.

I really hope these deals go through.

  18. I would swap Ba for De Jong every day of the week.

-21 vs 27. Resale value for De Jong (MA thinking here) could be huge whereas Ba will only be worth his clasue (which I think may be for foreign clubs) so good business sense there.

    – Ba is at his peak and still has that bomb attached to his knee.

    – De Jong isn’t goint to ACON

    – I’ve had a ‘Wise’ 😯 look at Luuk on Youtube and he can finish with both feet and his head and seems to be able to score very ‘crafted’ goals – a bit like Cisse. He also seems very mobile which is good for a wider role and I think he’d compliment Cisse better than Ba. I trust Carr and Pardew know more than me so the bid speaks for itself.

Maybe he isn’t a replacement but an addition but I think it most likely is a replacement.

If we sign him and Debuchy in the next week or two I’ll be over the moon. It will show everyone we mean business and hopefully keep all our big names apart from Ba and be able to attract a class CB. It would also help with the youth recruitment. It would also reduce the ‘selling club’ ****. I think we’re a club in evolution without Citeh money so the way were going about it is great.

      (Quote)

  19. The 4 million has to be a ‘feeler’ bid as let’s be honest…it’s derisory for a player of his calibre.

Got to get the balance of quantity and quality correct as we are gonna have a hell of a lot of fixtures and the rewards for qualifying for the uefa is minimal, think you only get about 8 million prize money during the hole tournament if you win the bleeding thing!

Has to be a big name big money departure to fUnd all this an I ain’t looking at Ba (even though he is also probably away)

      (Quote)

  20. The shields Gazette are now saying we haven’t put a bid in for DeJong… who knows what to believe when you read anything printed by the press 🙂

      (Quote)

  21. We should have signed Debuchy before the tournament. I am sure he was scouted well enough and long enough without the world seeing him in the last 2 games 😕

      (Quote)

  22. Moreno, I reckon we put a bid on him a while back, Lille are playing games, he has played well in the Euros and they are trying to drive up his value.

      (Quote)

  23. Moreno – Think about it another way. If you were Debuchy and you knew you’d probably be leaving Lille over the summer, would you jump at the first club that showed an interest or would you wait and see how everything pans out?

      (Quote)

  24. well my thoughts on this is its a ploy they are leading someone up the garden path toon dont normally make bids so public they have told clubs in the past that they will pull out if made public before deal is done, imo they are after another player and this is a way of showing the club they are looking elsewhere to force there hand, think the french lad deal is real enough but that has got out through his pal cabaye, well thats my take on it anyway 😉

      (Quote)

  25. Ice – But what if it’s not the club who are making this public? 😉

It’ll be an agent or advisor somewhere trying to flush out a better deal I reckon 🙂

Don’t worry I will put you back in the pond shortly as you are the only one who bites. 😛

Have you ever thought of getting a job as a duck on a fairground stall.? 😆

Anyway back to De Jong. If they buy him I will refuse to watch him unless he publicly apologises to Barfa. 👿

  29. All a bit too public for me. Apparently FC Twente have leaked it to the press to try and get a few more quid – fair enough, but I don’t think NUFC work that way anymore.

Would also be worried now it is in the press that other clubs with more money will get involved, especially now they know we’re in for him as we have had a pretty good record in the transfer market recently.

Either way I see him as a direct replacement for Ba – although how good would it be if he was brought in as an extra striker?!!

  40. But Garcia has dismissed Newcastle’s bid, claiming they must have made an offer for the wrong player as the figure was so low – the club are believed to want at least £6m.

‘But I do believe that Newcastle have faxed an offer of £4million – but they must have the wrong player,’ he joked.

    😐 😐 I think 5.5m should settle it.

      (Quote)

  43. I reckon if we are going to get Debuchy it will be because of Cabaye pursuding him. If he is a player that will move for money, or champions league, or to be in London ect. ie. Giroud to Gunners, then we can forget it. We just arn’t in a position, even now, to get the first choice players in from abroad. I think we will bring in more ‘unheard of’ players after the Euros and hopefully during pre-season as we have a lot of games during the start of the season. I think we will bring in rough diamond type players like slightly more senior Amalfitano’s with the intention of squad rotation next season. We still need a CB as a top priority. I could be wrong but I don’t see us spending big money on big name players like Debuchy. His involvement in the Euros has blown, any deal there was there, out of the water imho.

      (Quote)

  44. Here is a thought.. maybe we have bid on another unknown left back and the player/team are stalling. So Dekka forces their hand by putting in a bid on Debuchy that he knows will be waved away. This tells the player/team we are in talks with that we are now looking else where.. just a theory I have dreamed up but I wouldn’t put it past Dekka to try this kind of move 🙂

      (Quote)

  45. AMF I wouldn’t be suprised if the Dubuchy and De Jong bids were ‘look who we were trying to go’ type bids from this regime. They have done it in the past.

In terms of spending money on a striker to replace Carroll, they have already done that with Cisse and it took 12 months. This window will not be about spending money IMO. Unless, for example, Ba leaves in July and we have the release clause money to spend on a replacement. Even then I think it will be someone we have never heard of and these players we are currently ‘linked with’ are a smokescreen. That it was has almost always happened in the past, with a few exceptions like the Benny saga which went on for months and then we actually got him.

So I think the regime will look at the current sqaud and think that it is starting to take shape nicely and all we need is more depth in defense ect for the extra games next season. We will sign players that Carr and Co. recommend highly but still have a low value. Amalfitano was out of contract so arrived quickly.

  46. Like when we were supposed to have bid for M’Bengue, and Gameiro. I think these two players are just the latest version of those tbh.

      (Quote)

  47. DJG – I think we are in a position this year where will not have to sell to buy.. We are losing some dead wood so we will buy I reckon.. I just can’t see it being these two players. They could be the red herrings. I reckon we could be forcing a couple of hands that we are already negotiating with..

      (Quote)

  48. I agree toonsy yet from the clubs usual philosophy of scouting players over a number of years and swooping when the time is right…this story kind of throws that out the window don’t you think?

On the other hand it might be a case of..****…this boy may have a great tournament and cost twice more, we best move fast

Spot on fella’… I wrote an article on it last year. I believe half these rumours given to the press are fueled by the club themselves.

Usually the players mentioned are not targets, and then we sign someone else out of the blue.

  55. Afternoon everybody

Firstly, I’m pleased to see NUFC have managed to find the fax machine. Wouldn’t you think clubs would use a more modern and secure form of communication?!

Secondly, I’m really pleased to see these two players are targets of ours. I don’t believe that getting De Jong means the back of Ba at all. Pardew has made it clear he wants to keep Ba and as posted earlier, we have lost Lovern and are likely to loose Best and Ranger.
That would give us Ba, Cisse, De Jong and Shola – and personally I’d like to see another younger striker come aswell (late teens early 20’s) maybe on a free.
Debuchy looks good going forward but haven’t really seen his tested defensively yet, but certainly looks more of an offensive threat than Simpson.

I think an increase of as little as £2m could well land both players, again maybe consider offer Twente and Lille players for loan. Vukic to Twente and Obertan to Lille or something like that.

These 2 and maybe another 2-3 – a CB, CF and DCM should set us up for next season.

      (Quote)

  56. Ice – I dont think so.

If we loose Simmo, Best, Ranger and Forster – should generate around £9m.

I’d like to see De Jong, Debuchy, Mulumbu and for me Caulker (CB) and Yaya Sanogo (young CF) that should be around £25m I’d guess.
I’m not sure whether a £16m investment is greedy considering what we achieved last season… is it?! 😕

      (Quote)

  57. SHARPY kna mate,i agree with you, only winding you up,theres nee richie today to wind up 😉

      (Quote)

  58. Ice – if we could only get one of the 2 I’d opt for De Jong. Debuchy is good but if he’s going to cost close to £6m I’d maybe look at doing a deal with Twente to take De Jong and Rosales for say £12-13m for both.
I think we could pick Caulker up for around £3m, especially if Spurs get Vert.
Yaya Sanogo is on a free transfer I believe and Mulumu for maybe £4m, so really it could be closer to a £20m spend with £9m in.

I’m sure Cashley could stretch to that.

Anyway, how come you have time to wind me up, hasn’t your lass got you cutting the grass or weeding or some other Titchmarsh type chores?
