Toon bid £8m for Luuk de Jong

Doing a deal for de Jong?
Newcastle have made a bid of £8m (just shy of €10m) for FC Twente striker Luuk de Jong if reports in the local and national press are to be believed.

The 21-year-old Netherlands international has long been linked with Newcastle United and it would now appear, after his country’s elimination from EURO 2012, that the club have decided to test the water with a bid.

FC Twente are said to be looking for closer to £12m although once again we get back to the whole cash is king argument. Will Steve McClaren be tempted by thought of having a slightly lower fee up front so he can reinvest it in his team? Or would he prefer to wait for some of the cash like most other deals are structured?

Of course the news that we are actively pursuing a striker will fan the flames of the Demba Ba rumours once more and may even point towards to the fact that something has happened behind the scenes and that Ba has perhaps given an indication that he may indeed be off after all.

That is pure speculation on my part of course, but to me it seems strange that our club would be willing to spend what is a relatively large amount on a striker, which to me would suggest de Jong is eyed as being a starter. Yes I know we have more games next season with Europe and everything, but I still didn’t expect us to be willing to spend that amount on a striker.

For his part de Jong is a cracking not-so-little player with an impressive record in the Eredivisie and has racked up 59 goals in 119 appearances. Although his real breakthrough only came two seasons ago, it’s worth pointing out that since then he has scored 52 goals in 99 appearances.

The 21-year-old is tall (he stands at 6ft 2in), physical and can find the back of the net. He can improve and has years ahead of him in his career. An unused substitute for The Netherlands in all three EURO 2012 group games, de Jong has already represented his country seven times. Maybe they should have given him a go rather than sit him on the bench?

All in all, good stuff. Time will tell whether our bid is successful or not, but you never know, it might be. Alan Pardew and Steve McClaren get on – the former Middlesbrough manager was a guest of Pardew’s at the training ground not so long back remember – so perhaps the wally with the brolly may fancy doing us a favour?

We wont be the only club interested in de Jong though, which could be a problem, but then again I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how it all pans out.

  1. SHARPY shes oot mate 😉 well that vert as you put it has said hes still going to spuds, must be good money, cannot really comment on rosales just havent seen enough of him, have you?caulker has got PL ex which is a good thing and shouldnt cost a arm and leg jabba will like that 😀

  2. Ice – Rosales a good player, he just hasn’t got the media attention Debuchy has, which really, when you think, if Sagna had been fit and starting for France I don’t think Debuchy would be as widely known.
Caulker played really well for Swansea last season and is only 19. Yeah he’d be behind Colo and Saylor but he’d get game time at Newcastle next season and would certainly be one to develop and if we got him for £3m ish his value is bound to increase which would please auld Mike.
I think we should focus on the De Jong deal with Holland being out the Euros. Think Lille are likely to hold on any deal for Debuchy to see what France do, can only imagine the further France go the more coin Lille will want.

Your lass left you a list then Ice or do you get match nights off for good behaviour? 😀

  6. this Debuchy bid was made before the Euro’s started, its just the Lille manager (garcia) trying to up his price, now that he’s played a couple of games,, like an earlier post said, if sagna was fit, debuchy would not of even made the first team.

anyway, whats the score, and first scorer tonight going to be?? av gone for 3 – 1 england, gerrard first to score!!!! hope they dont let us down 🙁 🙁

You know what the thing is… They’ve never had anything, so they know no better. You’ll be surprised how happy and content many of them are despite poverty.

You see that a lot of the time, money brings stress and expectation.

The smallest things can put a smile of their face. It sounds ridiculous, but in some way I envy them.

You right though, there .s so much to learn from those that have nothing….

  27. Just had a look at the guardians minute by minute account of the France game and they going on about how bad the French defence was 😯 Poor old Lille might just of seen the value of mr Debuchy drop a little as two good games does not a tournament make.

  28. Dave,

Last week I dropped of a bag of sports equipment and winter blankets at Child Welfare.
The woman was in tears saying she couldn’t get the kids to come to the shelter.
They preferred the street life because. There was easier access to drugs.
At the shelter they get a free bed and food. But they don’t care…
She was happy with the soccer ball as she said it was the only thing that got them to come back to the shelter and stay. They get to kick about and do something besides drugs…

People ***** about the World Cup and Vuvuzelas etc. But during that time this country was buzzing. Crime dropped. It was huge.
