No need to sell and money to spend, says Pardew

Pardew has money to spend
Rumours have been a big part of the summer so far. In fact I’m struggling to recall a summer quite like it in terms of players linked with moves to us.

Naturally these rumours have been interspersed with players being linked with moves away from us, but for those fearing that particular scenario then Alan Pardew’s words in the Sunday Mirror should be of interest to you.

The silver-haired supremo has revealed that United have the cash to bring in as many as three more players this summer, and perhaps most tellingly, also revealed that the he can do so without the need to sell one of our bigger players to fund the recruitment process over the next six weeks or so.

“I know we can sign two or three players and keep all those we have. I know we can do that. I think we will be stronger,” Pardew told the Sunday Mirror.

“And if we do lose a marquee player to a really inflated price – an Andy Carroll price – then we have got to trust our judgement and go into the market place and bring in an equivalent, and I think Mike is quite comfortable with that.”

“The big job this summer is keeping players, as well as signing them. I think that is the key. We still have a window wide open and everyone is analysing and looking at what they did over the last year and at what other teams did. A lot of people will look at us, so I’m not out of the woods on that for sure.”

“I don’t fear a big offer coming in, I expect it. I expect a bid for one of our marquee players. Whether it’s enough money to take the player away, we will have to wait and see, but it would have to be a lot of money.”

“I would be very surprised if the spirit and camaraderie we built up last season was broken up, unless we lost four or five players – and I cannot see that in a million years.”

What about the aims for next season though? The other day he suggested that the fans would be happy with an eighth placed finish, but is the real aim for this season? Improvement it seems is the order of the day.

“We finished fifth, but that was last season. It is important that the message gets through to the players here that, while it is a good finish, it isn’t winning the league,” said Pardew.

“There are still four places to aim at above us and, if you want to be a winner, then you have to be better than you were last season.”

So nobody out, two or three in, plus an assault on the Premier League title? That wouldn’t be too shabby would it. I’d quite like us to conquer Europe whist we’re at it, and maybe win a domestic cup competition. Is that too much to ask?

In all seriousness though these are pretty positive words. Yes one of our big players could still go and no doubt people will say that Pardew is “whoring” our players out again, but look at the facts. It’s going to take big money to do so and the kind of clubs that can offer that will more than likely ***** the interest of the player in question as they will be clubs who are competing in the Champions League. It’s happened at bigger and more successful clubs than ours so we can’t be surprised can we?

Right, now back to waiting for something concrete to happen…

  1. The toon are moving along nicely, slowly improving the general quality of the squad, without spending wildly. It’s working at the moment, we’ll see how the new season commences.
Debuchy and the big dutch/brazilian centre half would be great additions to the squad…get them in…

  2. Aiming for the top four – at least he’s consistent. He said that earlier in the week as well.

  3. Comforting words if true though it does sound like his craic.
The only thing is, he suggests we have enough resources to get 3 players in.

I suggest we need 3 players without losing any quality. Huge amount of games this season.
So crack Mr Carr et al, bring them in.

  4. Pleased he didn’t mention about the fans being satisfied with eighth again! 😈

Only those from the southern hemisphere would be happy with that. 😉

  5. I think Pardz may have realised that a lot of **** fans may have taken his words to literaly the other day. Reports are, some were crying into their warm beers..

  6. I think Pardew is playing it nice and clever.
I like the way he is giving out the message that no player will leave unless it’s for way above valuation, unless it’s a fringe player.

I don’t think the players, the club or Pardew would be happy settling for 8th place and he knows that the fans wouldn’t be happy, unless we actually won a trophy and then finished 8th.

I think he’s just more or less telling the fans not to up their expectations based on one solid season as this club is still being sculptured, which can still mean the odd ups and downs along the way until it’s tweaked and tuned into a well oiled machine, which in my opinion is looking better as we go along.

The problem we have suffered in the past is, not pushing on from having a good squad and allowing players to be sold, yet I think this problem is being addressed in no uncertain terms and all clubs now know that we don;t have a bunch of knuckle heads at the helm…we now have a bunch of hard nose businessmen who don’t take **** and will not be bullied into soft transfer dealings.

We are on the map now and we are known as a club that’s not to be messed with no matter who comes calling.

  7. so arsed off with AP for constantly saying all our best players are up for grabs if a big money offer comes in.. why the fuk does he say this every single day? he is like a broken naffing record. No other manager comes out and says to the entire world that all his players are for sale at the right price on a daily basis. i also dont understand what he means when he says we cant compete with other clubs for keeping our players.. we already have them, they say they want to stay.. just dont agree to sell them..all are on long term gigs other than Ba and all are paid for, we turn a profit so where is the need to sell. This is probalby Ap’s only negative point for me. Stop trying to seel our best players AP you cok end.

  8. there is enough funds for 3 BIG signings…. if a 3m gem like tiote or dreamboat comes along i dont think dat counts as a big signing plus he want to sign a hand full of development players hes got two of those so far … might even grab a few free players … mind if AC came avail for 10m i would like to see him back wouldnt trust him with the no9 again tho for a long time

      (Quote)

  9. Craig, I don;t think Pardew is giving that message out.
What he is basically saying is, clubs CAN and WILL always come in for the better players and offer silly money which can turn a players head if the right club comes calling.
After all, we are Newcastle United and although to us, we are the dogs bollocks…we still can’t make players stay if a club of their dreams put in a big bid which makes them question their allegiance to our club.

Unfortunately that’s football but as I said in my earlier post…if that’s the case, then the money offered had better be mental Carroll type money or the players go no where because they are all tied down to long contracts and that’s our trump card.

The only exception is Demba Ba but we just have to take that as it comes and hope for the best.

      (Quote)

  10. I’m not too concerned when he talks about a top player going only for big money .Fact is outside of Citeh and Chelski most clubs would sell if faced with a massive offer. Arsenal just one top club who did recently and Manure have in the recent past also,so we certainly wouldn’t be the only ones who could be placed in such a position. Regarding where we finish I said the other day that I would accept 8th owing to extra games but would want a cup win so that we are still in Europe and because I’m desperate for a cup. 🙄 😉

      (Quote)

  11. Craig he doesnt say it everyday … the Jurno’s do,have you heard the context AP has actually said it in ??? none of his players are leaving he used those words… ‘we dont have to sell any of our player’ ‘we will only CONSIDER an offer if its silly money’ … ‘ive had a few phone calls asking if players are available to buy IVE TOLD CLUBS NO’

ive seen his interviews and that is what he said so before you complain about him get the quotes in context, jurnos and agent are just trying to engineer moves we dont have permission to mount a challenge so media hate to see us do well

      (Quote)

  12. Wolfie.. dont dispute any of what you say… wtf does he say it every single day though? i am not aware of any other club that constantly says this, day in and day out. We are not stupid and we got his message loud and clear the first time he said it.. let alone the three millionth. Some times less is more.. if he gets asked questions like’ have you had any bids for any of your players’.. why not just say’ no we have had none so far and we do not welcome any either’. Thats it, leave it alone.

      (Quote)

  13. John Grahem…please tell me in what other context the below can be taken other than.. if the right off comes we would sell??

“I don’t fear a big offer coming in, I expect it. I expect a bid for one of our marquee players. Whether it’s enough money to take the player away, we will have to wait and see, but it would have to be a lot of money.”

      (Quote)

  14. All I think Pardew is doing is simply putting the message out that there is always a possibility that some big club will come calling, due to the fact that we have some exceptional players on our books and the fact that we can’t compete on a level playing field , money wise or history wise of some teams and we all know who they are.

I just think Pardew is more or less saying to us all, be prepared for anything as anything can happen during a transfer window, as we are all aware , it certainly can and does happen when you least expect it.

He’s drumming it into our heads that’s all to expect the unexpected so that no one goes into a frenzy if something does happen…yet that can also be the opposite as well and we can actually bring in players that we all think were dead in the water signings, so it’s swings and roundabouts really, as he’s also gearing us up for that as well.

I’d rather him do it this way that stand there and say, “no, no , no…no player will leave this club, guaranteed.” Then all of a sudden 2 or 3 leave, which would have the fans up in arms, so I can see the method in his madness to be fair.

      (Quote)

  15. I wouldn’t worry guys ,I wouldn’t mind betting there have been a few big offers turned down already on a fair few of our STARS as it were. MA won’t let anyone go for peanuts ,so it’s safe to assume we need only fear Citeh and Chelski in the PL as don’t think anyone else has the cash we would ask for .

      (Quote)

  16. look who reported it ??? the sunday mirror ! hahaha seriously i saw his interview recorded no edits and he stated ‘ Ive been asked about my players ive told clubs no’ thats from the mans mouth not some spin doctor in the rags… and i would be confident in saying the sunday mirrors junk is from the same presser i seen from AP over in germany …. if ashley is goin to sell anyone it will be 35m cash upfront only clubs that will offer anything like that are City Chelsea and PSG… City have Yaya, nasri , barry , silva .. cabaye safe… they have aguero , ballotelli , dzeko and tevez … ba and cisse safe … kompany lescott toure .. colo safe ….

we have nothing to worry about Ashley will demand serious money the only players who will possibly leave Xisco , Ranger, Simpson, Raylor, Perch, Harper… your just completely over reacting for the sake of wanting to complain and any time im looking on here you complaining …. you were the same last summer as well

  18. If as we think we have a £20m budget. 3 players £7m each for Debuchy & Douglas. Then similar for a striker. Who? LdeJ was too much. Who we getting for £6m approx?

      (Quote)

  19. doug is only 5m so leaves 8 m for the striker plus 2m from best an 1m forster then the 2-3m we get for simpson which pumps it back up 10-12m for the striker… ranger might get us another 1m as well

      (Quote)

  20. Craig, in my opinion there is nothing wrong with Padrew bigging up our players and letting it be known that if an astronomical offer comes along for one of our “marquee” (hate this term 👿 ) players then we will evaluate it.

Firstly it is raising the profile of our players in general.
Secondly it is letting the buying clubs know where we stand.
Thirdly it is Pardew profiling himself too. Let’s be clear about it, outside of the usual suspects (SAF, Mancini, Wenger, perhaps De Matteo cos he won the Champs league), Pardew considers himself a top EPL manager, and feels he can talk the talk. Must say it’s difficult to argue against this cos he won all the managerial prizes last season.. 😉

    Pardew can never be accused of being a “shrinking violet”…. 😆 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  21. John.. we got 3 million for best and 2 million for forster, thats five million.

  22. Let’s be honest of we add three player to the current squad I think we should be looking at breaking into the top 4, especially of Arsenal sell RVP. They could be vunerable. Any team with Krul, Colo, Tiote, Cabaye, Cisse, Ba, HBA, Jonas and Marvuaex should be challenging for something.

However I feel we are very weak in midfield in terms of back up for Tipte and Cabaye so Wouk like to see a centre mid brought in.

Regarding selling players, we don’t need to sell so only if we get an outrageous offer should we even consider selling.

  23. Stu.. there is talk of Anita coming today..then again, everyone is coming and everyone is going so its probably another load of **** in the rags.

Anita deals is not even close yet , still only our initial bid in hopefully we open negotiation he looks a good player with bags of potential

      (Quote)

  26. i dont think we need many players, a CB and RB/LB, then use vukic alot and fergie also.

      (Quote)

  27. i agree craig we dont need many player, i want Anita based on the fact he can play def mid and at LB and Ron De Boer has also said he can slot in at CB, he showed this wen the Ajax CB done a Phillie Albert and he covered the gap and ill say it again the boys got talent… if AC comes available for 10m i thin AP show bring him home, along with Debuchy an wer looking good… then we have the youth Gosling, Vuckic, Meidi, Fergie, Sammy, Streete, Taver, Bigi and Amalfitano…. i think we have strong 1st team an with these youth players pushing behind them they will only play harder…. love some of these lads to make a hugh impact next season like when N’Zogbia and Milner push through and lit SJP a light

      (Quote)

  28. Regarding Anita, I reckon Cashley will try and get him as cheap as possible, and let it run to the wire last minute to test the blokes resolve.

If he goes to the makkems for more money then we have lost the gamble. We all know Cashley likes to gamble. If he recognises the better sporting perspective at NUFC, and still decides to come, then we have gained one hungry player eager to prove himself…

Risky business I know, but we have euro footy and being one of the “top 5” to our advantage…

  29. I think Pardew is covering his **** by saying one of our marquee players could be sold. Think he learned his lesson from the Carroll sale. I don’t think he’s ‘whoring’ our players I think it’s lazy journos asking the same questions every interview, which must get boring for Pardew. Everyone knows that’s the case, so there’s no problem.
The good news is that we don’t have to depend on the sale of a player to generate funds to improve the squad.
I agree with Premandup that we will have around £20m plus whatever we raise from player sales.
I think Debuchy and Douglas are as good as done deals – that would see off around £12m.
That should leave around £8m from the kitty and a further £5m from player sales.

Personally I’d like to see that £13m split. £6m (ish) on Guidetti and the rest on a LB – either Anita (who could cover DCM) or Cissokho.

We still have Simpson to sell and he looks like he’s heading to Reading – I’d hope for around £4-5m I’d hope.

Sakho would probably be available from PSG as well now and he would be a good option for a defensive target.
And for 500k, we should be bringing Good in to develop for the 1st team in a season or 2s time.

      (Quote)

  30. yea hes like 5’6 but apparently Ajax gaffer thinks he can play der …. 8m was the price on his head we could prob get him 6-7m tho just have to see what we do… we prob buy 2 players wer not linked with every hour like Marv wen we got him… id like to see u wrap 2 players this week just for piece of mind then pick up few more development players like Curtis Good for a start … nathan clyne is apparently in talks with southhampton

  31. Where is Axel today, he’s the blog oracle on all things to do with the cloggy league….?

      (Quote)

  32. I’d go for Debuchy, Douglas or Sakho, Anita and Guidetti with the money we have available.
That would give us enough first team cover for the season ahead, and Good will probs come in for 500k anyway.

      (Quote)

  33. that would be 4 nice additions to the current squad, i find it hard to disagree with them , ive not seen Guidetti nor have i heard much about him except hes good up an comin player…. who would u liken him to in terms of playing style just to get a rough idea … if he is bellamy like less the attitude id say yes …. id like a pacey forward with a direct style

      (Quote)

  34. People still want Cissokho? Personally, I hope he joins the Mackems as it will give HBS and Debuchy freedom of the right flank when we take ’em on. The guy is shocking positionally and has no defensive common sense. Poor player.

I don’t think we need a striker. I think Debuchy is as good as done, which was one of two key areas that needed addressing. The other position is CM. At the minute we have Jonas there, but he isn’t good enough for 1st team any more in my opinion. This is why I think Anita will be perfect as he is very composed on the ball and hardly ever loses possession(Based on Who Scored stats as I have never seen him). This is exactly the type of player we need to supplement Tiote and Cabaye. I think a player like this will literally be the difference between us dominating 75% teams next season or not.

As for a striker, I don’t think we need one if we plan to play a 4-3-3 and would rather all of the money go on CB cover, Debuchy and Anita.

      (Quote)

  35. I think back to Hughton, who we could barely get a sound bite from and I must admit I found the stone wall silence annoying.. Pardz does love the media but after declaring that Carroll would not be sold and then Carroll being sold a week or two later, you can hardly blame him for being a little open and honest about what may happen with players exiting for big money..

      (Quote)

  36. I’m getting a bit worried now. The teams around and below us have already strengthened their squads with some very promising players.
Our name seems to be being used as a bargaining chip for other clubs to maximize transfer fees and whilst we may have the money for 2 or 3 players, that may not be the case with the inflated prices being quoted.
I think we will be a better squad next year simply with some players having the experience of last year under their belt. I think cabaye, cisse, Ba, santon, and Benny will be even better this season and marveoux will be like a new signing. We also have a couple younguns like vuckic, abied, fergie, and Sammy that may be ready to make a bigger impact.
But as everyone is saying, with the added fixtures we need more depth or we risk falling behind the clubs around us who have already strengthened.
My main worry is that whilst we may have enough dosh for 2 or 3 players, that doesn’t include a striker. I have a bad feeling pardew needs to sell one of our bigger players in order to generate the funds to get the striker he wants.
There isn’t a player in the 1st team that I would say has cover ready to replace him so really losing any of our better players could be a major setback. But I have trust in the quality of the lads and the men leading them so hoping for the best.

      (Quote)

  37. Well if Douglas, Anita and Debuchy come and live up to their potential we can put out a team like this:

    ———————Krul———————
    Debuchy—–Taylor—–Coloccini—–Santon
    ———————————————-
    ————-Anita——–Tiote—————
    ———————————————-
    Ben Arfa———-Cabaye———-Marveaux
    ———————————————
    ——————-Cisse———————

And have a subs bench containing the likes of Ba, Jonas and Douglas.
On paper, at least, you would hope that team will at least qualify for Europe again, and at least get close to the top four.

      (Quote)

  38. Jonas no good anymore… The Kid, are you joking! totally disagree…. I am not sure how much you understand about team dynamics mate… No team can be full of flair players, Jonas grafts hard for the team..

      (Quote)

  39. I can’t see Jonas not starting a majority of games this season once again. I think he is a vital part of what makes us tick.

      (Quote)

  40. I like 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1.
If Anita comes and is as good as some say, then it would make sense to have him and Tiote shoring up and making the midfield solid to allow the likes of Ben Arfa to do what he’s best at – namely torturing defenders.

      (Quote)

  41. Good words from Pards and was nice to hear him say about doing better than last yr, which I thought was far better than saying that the fans would accept 8th place.

Craig I do get what your saying I know as most fans know that if a mega bid comes in for a player they accept it I just can’t understand why he keeps having to tell us 👿 we already know that.

Aussie I agree 100% about the wall of silence from Hooters were we were kept in the dark like mushrooms, IMO part of the managers job is to talk to the fans

  43. Doing this on my phone. Didn’t see your correction. It is encouraging to discover that you do at least realise 4-4-3 is an invalid formation. You’re making progress (slowly). I’ll give you a ‘C’ for trying.

      (Quote)

  44. It’s nice to hear Pardew saying that he’s looking to build on what we did last season and looking to improve. It will be difficult with the number of extra games and stresses of playing in Europe though (not that I’m complaining!). If Pardew manages to bring in the likes of Debuchy and Douglas plus a striker, then we’ll be looking pretty set for the new season. I’d really like us to give one of the cups or the Europa League a real shot next season, I think we’d probably be able to have a decent go at one of them without compromising our Premier League form too much.

Also agree with Pardew about big players leaving. If someone comes after one of our big players with stupid money then we’d be idiots to turn it down. Liverpool were willing to pay £35 mil for Andy Carroll, which was fair enough. What did we get out of the deal? Well, it basically financed the whole restructuring of our team, I suppose. Even Manchester Utd sold Cristiano Ronaldo when Madrid offered silly money for him. That’s not to say that I’d be happy to see someone like Cabaye or Tiote leave though.

Just wanted to say as well that I’ve got a blog post on Coloccini over at http://www.extratimeandpenalties.com which some of you might like. Hope you enjoy reading if you give it a look. Cheers!

      (Quote)

  45. XTRATIMEANDPENS yeah I agree with Pards about a big money offer but I just don’t know why he has to keep telling us.
As for Ronaldo I think the fact that Ronaldo was causing probs and wanting the move is more to do with it, than Manure not being able to turn down the money 😉

      (Quote)

  46. good afternoon MUNICH MAG and everyone else , the biggest rumour coming out of Holland today is Anita is seeking talks with Ajax’s new technical director Mark Overmaars about his future .Its looking like the lad is trying to get a move too the Premiership pushed through and from the reports with statements from the lads Agent we are the only ones with a serious offer on the table . The mackems and Villa are reported to have interest in him also but have as of yet not made a serious move and from quotes from player and Agent he favours us .

      (Quote)

  47. If it’s true that we’ve a got a £20m(+what we get in transfers) warchest then we should spend as such
£7m for Debuchy(would have preferred him for less but this is the fee reported)
£5m for Douglas(would prefer Sakho for the same price though)
    £7m for Anita
£500k for Good (Near to completed ❓ )
Then with the money generated from the sales of Forster(2m), Best(3m), and potentially Simpson(2-3m ❓ ) we could make a 5-6m move for Guidetti. Then with the remaining money plus the wages from Smith, Lovenkrance ect we can pay the players decent, reasonable wages.

      (Quote)

  48. ANDYMAG i reckon it will cost more like 5 million for a team to buy Simpson from us , remember he is English and English players usually cost more , even with only a year left on his contract .

      (Quote)

  49. I don’t understand all the Guidetti chat. Have Man City said they are willing to sell? Why would they?

He is 20, and had almost a goal per game ratio last season for Feynoord. Surely it would take more than 5/6 million for him Andy!

      (Quote)

  50. ST
City don’t need him and he doesn’t want to stay. So for an inexperienced young striker 5-6m is very reasonable especially when City dont need the money, they sold Adebeyor for around 5m so I think we should get him for that as well.

      (Quote)

  51. Really can’t see Anita signing to be honest.

But can see debuchy now seems like its all pointing in that direction and i would imagine likewise for Douglas although am still not convinced by that.

It leaves us a bit of Bob to spend on what I imagine is a winger striker rather than a out and out striker. De Jong doesn’t seem to be anything anymore which is sad but a pacey tricky winger who is attacking would be useful addition which is why is Chelsea buy hulk I can see us going for sturridge …

Anyway all transfer talk let’s get em in our new udinese kit and we can start talking! 😀

      (Quote)

  52. Well we have missed a good signing , Here in holland the news is PSV have agreed a fee of 4.1 million euros for Narsing from Heerenveen a bloody steal at that price . He was the leading player in the assist’s last season in the eeredivise pace to burn can cross ,dribble and score .

      (Quote)

  53. I’m pretty confident Toon have a little surprise lined up that noone has mentioned yet in the forward dept ,just a gut feeling nothing more. Pretty confident on Debuchy now but not sure we will end up with douglas tbh ,would prefer Sakho ,like Andy says.

  56. And so we should have enough dosh for three players…

I mean come on. I read an article in the Guardian a while back (again, poorly researched) where Derrick was getting all smarmy because last season they “spent” the Carroll money on bringing in players like Cisse, Cabaye, Ba, Marveux and Santon.

Right, that’s all well and good, but that still left a surplus of 10mil alongside the Nolan and Enrique money…We’ve already cleared out some deadwood this season and actually sold people…so we should have three players in-without selling anyone ELSE!

      (Quote)

  57. @Andy fair comment, but City know what Adebayor’s level is, and that he is not going to get any better. For a club that don’t need to sell, I just don’t understand why they would take a pittance for a player with such an incredible scoring rate last year. Huge risk that he could develop into a quality player and they’ll have missed out.

I do rate Sturridge, unfortunately his huge wages are a stumbling block will be his curse. Can seriously see his career facing a SWP-esq spiral unless he decides to lower his pay and move.

  59. Newkie @ 70 I agree with you mate.

ST I think the other money we generate should be paying the relegation debt, come to think of it Jabba should be paying that as it was him that got us relegated.
IMO player sales should be re invested in players nowt else

  60. Solano-I’m not saying I expect every penny to be spent in equal measure, obviously there’s no chance of that. But I do expect a respectable attempt to be made at keeping things relatively even-especially if we are indeed trying to “kick on.”

Its not made any better when Llambias comes out and tells us all the Carroll money has been spent. The majority of fans aren’t completely thick, if we’ve spent all the Carroll money (which we haven’t anyway) then you can quite easily point at the other players we have sold and claim that money hasn’t been reinvested or used for some purpose…

  61. Just read that Ajax have signed 19 year old Defensive midfielder Boccara on a 4 year contract from PSG . They must be preparing for the sale of Anita. Here’s hoping anyhow 😉
