Can we really pull off a transfer masterclass?

The unlikely transfer
As soon as news broke regarding our rather audacious bid to bring Andy Carroll back to Newcastle, I always knew that the headlines would be dominated by it for the next few days or so.

And so it is proving with numerous and plentiful headlines reporting many different bits and bobs and potential obstacles that could stand in the way of any deal ever coming off.

Sure it’s exciting, maybe even romantic, but I honestly can’t see it happening for us as there are an awful lot of potential obstacles that could scupper any deal. I’ll go into the issues in more detail below, but suffice to say that I think this transfer, whilst sensational, won’t happen for a combination of the reasons I’m about to mention.

Liverpool are unlikely to want to lose so much money on a player they paid £35m for 18 months ago, especially when you consider that the club interested in buying the player is the very same one that ripped the eyes out of the deal and bragged about it soon after. The public humiliation would be too much for Liverpool to handle in my opinion, especially if we bought him back for less than half of what was paid for him.

Then there are the dynamics of any deal and the fine print involved which would cover wages. Carroll is reportedly on somewhere in the region of £75k a week. I’ve read a lot of people saying how he’d take a pay cut and all he’s ever wanted to do is play for Newcastle, but he was doing just that and was happy enough to sign for more money at Liverpool and move away from Newcastle in the first place wasn’t he? He’s a footballer, end of.

Apparently he is interested in a move back to Newcastle and the reason this story has been made public is to put some pressure on him to force things along himself. My question is how much of a pay cut would he really be willing to take? Or how much close would the club be willing to go to his current wage? Only Andy Carroll, his agent, and the club will know that one…

I very much doubt it is going to happen, for these and more reasons. However, to borrow a cliche, football is a funny old game and anything can happen so in this mad world that is Newcastle United I’m not going to rule it out totally.

Just 95% instead…

  1. Toonsy ,you raise good points why it won’t happen there and for the most part I would agree .The only things I would say that may make it happen is that number one where else is he gonna go? .I can’t see him going to west Ham as there is no Euro footie a good chance of relegation again and if he refuses to go because he’d prefer us ,they can’t force him to .Same applies to other teams like Fulham ,Villa ,stoke for instance. If an Arsenal, Manure or Spurs or Chelski come maybe it would happen ,but don’t see them bidding ,possibly Spurs might. His other option is to stay and wait his chance and carry on picking up his big wad while stagnating ,something I’m sure the club won’t want and nither will Andy. I still think there is miles left in this saga and would not be at all surprised if he does end up at SJP as the closer it gets to the window closing the more desperate the Dippers will get and most likely buckle ,especially if the player himself wants home.

  2. There are many reasons why this might not happen but Liverpool aren’t one of them. They are in a really poor position here. From the moment Rogers had his first press conference and made it clear Carroll didn’t fit in his plans Liverpool had a problem. The fact is that they know nobody will pay more than say £13m for him and ideally they would need to loan him out first. If Liverpool can get that they will sell i’m sure, why would they want a player on big bucks sat on the bench never getting a game when they can get something for him?

Rogers wants him out, Nufc want him and by all accounts Carroll wants the move. Personally I think it’s all down to the Carrol. If he wants to move, will take a pay cut and Rogers really wants rid, he’ll be gone.

  3. the thing for me is he wont want to play second fiddle to demba , and i cant see it myself , we wouldnt put demba o the bench for carrol surely , so its a thing to sell his career to rivals , like above the pay drop would have to be considerable and i cannot see the likes of him allowed to be on more money than the likes of cisse and ba and the rest it would unbalance the squad and the karma of the group i would think so its nice to dream but i can never see it happening 🙂

  4. Liverpool fan here. I think we’re embarrassed enough already having spent 35m on him, so ‘enbarrassment’ doesn’t really come into it. Especially since it was Kenny who saw fit to pay that money for him, and Kenny’s rightly been moved in now thank God.

But didn’t Derek Llambias totally belittle Carroll just after we signed him?

“I have to admit that £30m for Andy Carroll is a lot of money,” Lambias reportedly said, before responding when one supporter asked him “Is he worth £30m?”: “No – he’s worth f*** all.”

He also went on to say: “It is about control. We had the control…”

What a shame. Famous last words.

  5. What we have to bare in mind with LFC no matter what we hope, is that they are not doing to be stiched up twice by us. So dont think that AC will come to us for next to nothing. LFC and its fans will not be happy to be reminded of how we sold AC then got him back again at a ‘cut price’ I personally dont think it will happen.

  6. To sum up my sentiments from the last post:

Don’t want him back. For the price we’d pay (12mil +) we could get a far better player who with fit it far better with our current squad.

He really just isn’t as good as people believe he is. Let Liverpool be stuck with him.

  7. How many goals did Carroll get last season?? 4 or 5 ?? Please tell me how that is worh 10 – 15 million.. The problem I see is that some think that as soon as he slips on the black and white shirt, he will magically start scoring goals again. Look I know king kenny is nearly at fault for all of Andy’s missed chances while he was in charge of liverpool 🙂 🙂 but there comes a point where you have to ask questions of the big fella. KK didn’t play to his strengths…please, talk about making excuses for him.. He is an average striker and in no way should he be starting ahead of BA or Cisse.

  8. another issue, we’re league rivals. Would you sell/loan a player who would better the squad of one of your rivals?

  9. We are all saying it won’t happen ,so any idea where he’s gonna end up and why ❓ 😕

  10. Kimtoon

QPR would be a decent bet. Or West Ham. He will want to come back here.

Ashley and Lambias rightly won’t want him back. And he’ll end up taking any offer that comes his way in a sulk.

      (Quote)

  11. JJ , Still think he’d sit on the bench in a sulk if he can’t come back to Toon.Don’t see West Ham or QPR as serious options ,it would show a lack of ambition . 😉 Pool have a major problem on their hands with this situation and they need him off the wage bill like us with Xisco .

  12. Liverpool fan here, Am so sorry but i dont see why its bad a thing that we’ll be stuck with carroll? Ok he hasn’t set the premiership alight as of yet but i generally think in my own opinion andy carroll is a very good player you could see that he was coming into his own at the end of last season so all in all i really want him to stay! but if he doesn’t fit into BR plans then there’s no other option really. But first i think it would be better to loan him out and let him bang a few goals in and up his price abit.

  13. Old paper article;
Carroll told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle on Tuesday: “[Managing director] Derek [Llambias] asked me to hand in a transfer request, so I was pushed into a corner and had no choice. I wasn’t wanted by them and they made it clear they wanted the money.
“Then I flew down in [owner Mike Ashley’s] helicopter. I didn’t want to leave. I’m gutted that I wasn’t wanted at my home team after everything I have done and the progress I have made. I didn’t want to leave at all. Make sure they know I didn’t want to leave. The players, staff and fans were fantastic.”
At 2.37pm GMT on Monday, Carroll told Wraith he was “not going anywhere”, but by 5pm Carroll had said: “They have kind of said we don’t want u but want me to say I wanna go. And I said I don’t want to go.”
Newcastle claimed that they accepted Liverpool’s £35 million offer after the striker handed in a transfer request, but Carroll said: “No I didn’t that’s what I mean that’s what they wanted me to do and I said no. They said they wanted to accept it.”
Asked if he had no choice but to move to Anfield, he replied: “Looks like it.”
Wraith then asked Carroll if he had “any message you want put across to the fans?” Carroll replied: “They said they wanted the money. Gutted to be leaving Newcastle but I was kind of pushed out the door. Gutted to be leaving my home club but I was practically told to go. Didn’t want to leave that’s why i signed a five-year deal.”

Posted to show Carrolls version of events.

    And just to show the genius of Derek Owlheed Lambias as quoted above by Felderkirk;

How’s about keeping your drunken thoughts to yourself Owlheed.! Did you never realise that footballers do sometimes return to football clubs?

    @aussie & JJ

The above Carroll quote was posted to show Carrolls viewpoint on the transfer at the time and not to question the great business deal done. 😉

      (Quote)

  14. ILM – Would Liverpool see it as strengthening a rival? After all they clearly don’t rate him and the £35m is a real millstone round their neck. Plus I reckon they could do with the £13m or so.

  15. Smells like a massive media smoke screen thrown up by the Club, whilst they quietly go about tying up a couple of their true targets aware from the public eye.

  16. Again Stuart,

Do you really think we couldn’t get better than Carroll for 13Million pounds! 😯

Especially considering we will probably be playing with just one striker a lot next season. For me, Carroll would be behind Cisse and Ba.

    He’s worth 8mil tops IMO.

      (Quote)

  17. Good…I don’t want him!

Lets get ourselves another leftwinger/forward instead and sort out the bloody defence!

  19. I hope we dont get sidetracked from buying Debuchy and the centre half we are screaming out for to get Carroll back, As it stands another striker is a luxury not a neccesity…

      (Quote)

  20. JJ – I’m not arguing the point about the money, we probably could get someone better but would they be too similar to Ba and Cisse? The point about Carroll is that he’s different and all good teams have flexibility in their squads.

We would have so many options for the different teams we play, we could change it depending on the who we’re playing or change a game with a substitution with a little bit of something different.

  21. I think he’s a Judas piece of **** that forced a transfer through and left us up **** creek. then proceeded along the route that barton and enrique followed, ie take advantage of fans hate of the board and use it to justify their greedy transfers.

HOWEVER, i don’t begrudge him a move to one of the biggest (unfairly these days) in the world and would love him to come home. Can’t help but grin when i watch back footage of him banging them in for us.

Loan is the dream but if ba went would people be happy if Carroll was his replacement at 12 mill or whatever. we’d get the fire back in his belly and make him unplayable again.

      (Quote)

  22. CC@25-Exactly

Why can’t we just use that money to actually seal up these defensive deals, or indeed buy a better centre half than douglas…

      (Quote)

  23. Troy you’ve already posted that a few times, grow up and stop trolling.
I thought nolan advised him to go? why would he be asking nolan for advice if he had no choice? just a few months earlier we sacked unanimous favourite hughton, our board clearly don’t give a jot about saving face, they wouldn’t have forced Carroll to put in a request they would have just told him.
Finally, lambias “reportedly” said. i don’t like the guy but fecking hell that’s proof of naff all.

  24. How many of those who want Carroll just want to justify the 40 quid or whatever they spent on getting a Carroll shirt back in the day?

    Troy? 😉

  25. I’d rather offer the same amount for Stephane Sessegnon, Jakub Blaszczykowski, Fabrizio Miccoli, Loïc Remy etc…

Carroll might be slightly different to Ba, but they’d all be fighting for that central striking role.
What we need more is a forward who can offer pace and width and creativity while chipping in with goals.

I’d rather offer the same amount for Stephane Sessegnon, Jakub Blaszczykowski, Fabrizio Miccoli, Loïc Remy, Andre Ayew etc…

      (Quote)

  26. Troy
“His friendship with Toon managing director Derek Llambias, Pardew and his former team-mates – not to mention John Carver, the man who prevented the club from losing him for free in 2004 during his stint as Academy chief – has remained untarnished.” 😆

      (Quote)

  27. AC is more than a one trick pony. I think he’d be a good signing, and keep Ba as well. Carroll’s a fairly unique player and would give us options like few others, and that could be crucial against European opposition.

Just look what Wyn Davies did 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  28. Just can’t see this coming off. As much as I’d take back Carroll in a heartbeat it makes absolutely zero sense to me from Liverpool’s perspective.

As Toonsy points out, it’d be quite a humiliating acceptance of ineptitude on Liverpools’ part. Plus, why the hell would they let him move to one of their closest league rivals? As far as Liverpool and Newcastle are concerned the 4th spot next season will be a priority, why loan out a 35m goalscorer to your rival?

To be honest, I’m gobsmacked NUFC even had the audacity to attempt this move. I would tell us to fark right off.

I heard we offered to pay half his monthly wages which would make sense, for NUFC. Just can’t see this happening, at all.

Move along now, nothing to see here.
    Next….!

  29. As i said i would only chase him when we get Debuchy and a centre half signed up but one thing that might be telling is Alan Pardews friendship with Brendan Rogers, Id be amazed if pards hadnt put a sneaky feeler out to see if liverpool would let him leave and they must have got the green light to even try and get him on loan.

Lee ryders sauces (reggae regae and hp) are saying that he wants the move, They blatantly want rid and it looks like we want him back.

So everyones willing but money as ever will be the problem…

  30. I’d rather we got Theo Walnut from Arsenal instead of Judas. At least he’d fit into our system a lot better.

  31. We can not stare blind on the fact that the lad is from Newcastle. We have better team nowadays, and if he does not make the team in Liverpool why would he make the team in Newcastle. That finished above Liverpool by the way. Not meaning to rub it in the fans of Liverpool but we manage to scam him off why the beep would we need him back. Get other signings, Guidetti or Rhodes or whom ever.

  32. Just for Troy, a snippet from that Chronicle article….

“His friendship with Toon managing director Derek Llambias, Pardew and his former team-mates – not to mention John Carver, the man who prevented the club from losing him for free in 2004 during his stint as Academy chief – has remained untarnished.”

  33. Rodz – I really don;t think anything will come of this, but I can’t help admire Mike and Dekka for trying. I love it and think it’s funny as fook 😆

      (Quote)

  34. 😆 He’s thick as mince by his own admission. He made a huge mistake, led on by several scumbags, most of all his shyster agent. Now he sees an opportunity to come back – no surprise that he wants to make it happen.

What we didn’t know was whether the two clubs would want to let him.

Then Liverpool put in a new manager who promptly made it clear he wanted rid of Carroll.

Now NUFC have put in a bid, which makes it clear that both Pards and the club management are up for it.

This is going to happen, like it or not. Personally, with a Euro campaign coming up, I’m all for it. He’ll be on fire in a black and white shirt, just as before.

Having 3 top strikers competing for a position? Sounds like a CL level club to me.

      (Quote)

  35. Doubt he’ll come anyway, but doubt selling to a “rival” will have no bearing on where he goes….Chelsea were rivals but they sold Torres to them 😉

Troy don’t forget AC’s “alternative” view of things at the time….”When I knew it was real and that there was a chance for me to come here I knew it was a great opportunity and I had to take it.” 😉

      (Quote)

  36. Toonsy, yeah it is really fkn cheeky like, I thought. 😀
…well, I suppose it’s the squeaking wheel that gets the grease. Can’t knock ’em for trying I suppose. 😆

Bats, I’ve just rang up and subscribed to ESPN for the matches (our next 2 friendlies are on). Can’t hack the shitty streams on my 1.5mb internet connection. It’s only £9 a month if you’re already with Sky, and you can do an ‘auto-cancellation’ thing with them where it stops automatically at the end of the month. Obviously I’ll be ringing back up on August 1st cos they’re doing 2 August games as well.

I really think they have fun with it… Some some form of rich man entertainment making others look like right plonkers.

  46. “I suppose Liverpool have made themselves look like twats before. They bought Robbie Keane from Spurs for 20m then sold him back 6 months later for 12m. ”

Aye I couldnt believe it when they did that, Keane was a top notch proven premier league striker, Mandy was/is a young lad who they bought on a whim, It was obvious watching his debut for them when he came off the bench and they just humped straight long balls forward towards him and totally ignored the way we had used bartons diagonals into him that he would struggle…

  47. Rodz say earlier….. To be honest, I’m gobsmacked that NUFC even had the audacity to attempt this move, I would tell us to fark right off……

  48. I remember reading a piece about Carroll where he states that he was forced to leave and he didn’t have a say in it. I really wish I could find a copy of it! Hopefully some **** fecker will have a copy they can post it..

      (Quote)

  49. It’s not as great as it seems to me like, I think it’s fairly obvious that one of our other strikers are going or under a transfer bid from someone, there is no way on earth that we would spend that knd of money on a backup or someone who is not guaranteed to start.

Under Ashley most expensive player was colo/cisse at £10m.

I would like it to happen and not to fussed about Ba anymore as I feel his whole contract situation is a greedy pisstake and would leave us ****** if he went for £7m. We couldnt get a decent replacement for that much IMO.

  50. Hitman i agree liverpool look like mugs right now! 😆
Hopefully its another smoke and mirrors job to distract us all until debuchy, douglas come through the door…. 😀

  51. CC@25 Don’t think they will be sidetracked on Debuchy ,reckon that’s a done deal already ,maybe a medical weds or fri 😉

Ice @30 Saw that earlier too .That’s the point see ,if Pool want shot of him ,he’s not gonna go where they say, they can’t force him like. Longer the window goes on with the prospect of his *** on the bench and £80K a week draining away the more desperate they will get .Basicly Toon and a few other clubs hold all the cards YET AGAIN , unless Andy is happy with a club like West Ham or Villa maybe.

    Brisvegas @35 Agree on that.

Whumpie@43 Think you may be right. 😉

Hitman@47 I think even Dezza and co are a bit too grown up for that 😆 😕

  52. BigP who’s to say what clauses Newcastle have put into Ba’s contract to make sure we don’t get burnt.. I can’t imagine dekka and Co not having some form of protection against his dodgey knees.. so I wouldn’t say it was all one way traffic with the BA contract..

  53. If I’m really honest with myself, I suppose I just like the idea of a local lad back in the team. While I really like our foreign imports, if you have too many having to translate in their heads and adapt to the style and local living, things start to unravel.

I remember not long ago we had seven Brits on the pitch at once most matches, including several Geordies – Harps, Shola, Tayls, Carroll. I liked that.

  54. Toonsy, how come sometimes you have a avatar and sometimes you don’t? Or is my laptop on the blink?

And I’ve heard from reliable sources within the club that we have a new signing being announced in the morning. Unfortunately for you guys, the we here is Brisbane Roar 😉

      (Quote)

  55. The thing that worries me is Ba has not signed a contract extention and removed that effin clause and I’m not too sure he’s been even offered a renewal .That said there is a distinct possibility he could go for the £7m on July 31st and I for one am not comfortable with that prospect one bit, as it’s a bit late on for a replacement. Why has this not been rectified is the question we should be asking imo.

  56. L’pool fan here. I can’t believe the rubbish that I am reading here about AC. L’pool wouldn’t let him leave for less than £18m fact!! AC was coming into his own at the back end of the season (Newcastle days), unfortunately for AC. we have a new man in charge of “our club” & see’s that AC is not suited to his style of football (no long humps up field). AC would be a good addition to “your club”. May I just like to wish your club all the best for next season & I personaly hope L’pool can take all 6 pts from you!!
