Does Pardew have a right to tell Liverpool to cut their losses?

Pardew tells Liverpool to cut their losses
I’ve read Alan Pardew’s latest comments regarding Andy Carroll, and I’ve also read some of the reaction from Liverpool fans on the matter.

I’ll quote it all below, but essentially what Alan Pardew is saying is that Liverpool won’t recoup what they paid for Andy Carroll, and I don’t think anyone in a sane frame of mind would be able to deny that.

The reaction from a fair amount of Liverpool fans is that Alan Pardew should not be saying such things, with some even likening his comments to something Harry Redknapp would do, or, if we cast our minds back a little bit further and take off any red tinted glasses that may still be being worn, what Liverpool might have done with Andy Carroll (who knew what terms he was going to be offered prior to asking for a payrise at Newcastle and used an agent hired by Liverpool to conclude the deal, allegedly) or Jose Enrique, who if you recall was a “done deal” months before the transfer was finalised leaving Enrique to play **** for the remainder of his Toon career.

Anyway, this is what Pardew had to say, and what has caused some of the reaction amongst Liverpool fans:

“John Madejski used to say to me about certain players, ‘Just wipe your nose and move on’, and I think Liverpool are going to have to do that with Andy. I think it was obvious as soon as Brendan went into Liverpool that Andy’s time was going to have to be somewhere else. I think it’s quite right we’re involved in that.”

“Whether he comes here is something that I will take or I will leave. It’s a lot of money for Mike, although we’ll obviously be getting a big upside in terms of what we sold him for, and we’ve got three great strikers here already. But of course as the manager, I want the best players I can get.”

I’ll ask again, what is actually wrong with that?

I mean this wouldn’t have come about but for the comments of Andy Carroll’s own manager who pretty much put him in the shop window. The problem is the shop window is full of damaged goods that only might come good again.

At the end of the day we’ve bid, and we’re still in for him according to Pardew himself, which is why he is being asked questions by journalists and why he is answering them, in my opinion, truthfully.

Anyone see a problem with that?

  1. Southern red….Nolan advised Carroll to join you all despite being our captain at the time. Needless to say many of us do not wish him well

  2. I seeeeee, cheers Richie Toon! 🙂

The whole West Ham thing is pie in the sky in all honesty, would expect nothing less from Allardyce lets face it, but they wouldn’t have the collateral to take AC off us.

  3. Andy…Campbell’s a local lad I think. Don’t see him wanting to leave. He has a better chance of playing for is

  4. I wasn’t aware of that MDS…very much a conflict of interests in that case. I guess it happens a lot but id be as p*ssed off as anyone if it happened so openly to one of ours. I believe McManaman was key to persuading Owen to do one to Madrid, which is a little different possibly but not good all the same.

  5. Having just watched Morocco I was pretty impressed with Barrada like, he looked to play that left channel aswell and it has been suggested we could get him for as little as €4m. He could be really good buy for us I think.

I can think of a few players that the ‘local’ factor meant f-ck all to. Saying that I think Adam might be different, seems like a good kid, and by kid I mean 9 months older than me 🙄

Pardew has done nothing wrong. Liverpool have put him in the shop window.

Totally different the sloppy chops craic. Ba wasnt for sale.

Just seen Buck on SSN saying AC very much a Liverpool player and he’s concentrating on getting fit and ready to play a part there.Lots of mixed messages going on .Still wonder what he meant when he said in much earlier interview that he had spoken to Andy and he knows exactly where he stands 😕 .Maybe what he should of said was Andy is very much a liverpool player in the first place ,then the press and fans wouldn’t be having a field day with it.

  18. Probably mentioned before, but definitely not in proportion to those of us worrying about transfer movement.

I’m very certain now that the reason we haven’t had any real outlay yet is because we don’t know how much we are going to be needing to spend.
We have 5 days left with Ba’s clause. I think the board are waiting for that.

If a club swooped and signed him it would drastically alter (CB aside) the positions we need filling the most. And the 7 mill for a proven prem striker wouldn’t go to far so it may dent the budget for things like fullback that aren’t crucial.

Tbh it makes sense, as annoying as it is. If we lost Ba then striker would by far be the most important signing. However if we don’t then we only need a back up and can focus on bolstering the rest of the squad with the funds we are maybe setting aside as a contingency.

  21. hahah exiled to the sunny south but i only really have any beef with those usual suspects *cough* Chelski, Mancs etc *cough*

Ive never had any problem with others to be fair and i guess no matter how much i love my club and have red tinted glasses, if you can’t see how your own beloved club can mess up at times then you need to get a better grip on reality. No club is perfect, lets be honest but its good to hear some level heads on a forum too. Its often just a case of slating in whatever docker-like language they can grasp as opposed to sound reasoning.
You guys are a breath of fresh air…i should’ve naffed off a long time ago hahaha sorry! blame yourselves 😉

      (Quote)

  22. That only makes any sense if the board had already decided to have a low outlay (say, around £10m) on filling the areas we have obvious deficits.
If they were planning on spending nearer £20m its not reallly necessary to wait for the Ba situation.
£20m would have been enough to get a couple of defenders
and whatever was left over plus the money from selling Best etc, and money from the sales of Ba and Simpson would easily gives us the money to buy a top class striker.

      (Quote)

  23. @Pootle
Don’t think we can always rely on Carr though. We would need a top striker AND a back up. Basically it would cost more to replace Ba than the fee we’d get for him (unless Carr had an ace up his sleeve). I think it’s actually astute management. Imagine if we had spent our budget on Debuchy/Douglas/Anita and Spurs had swooped in on 31st July and signed Ba.
7 Mill to sign a replacement striker (less if the rumours that Ba gets a chunk of the fee are true). Would be very, very nervous times. (and that would still just leave us with Shola as 3rd choice)

Would love to be watching the Spain game
BUT…2 year old has told me she”dont like football and im not watching football daddy” so Zingzillas won 🙁

I think the not liking football bit comes from her being half smoggie which in time she will grow out of and eventually embrace her more intelligent half of the gene pool

      (Quote)

  25. Solano

I think the reason why we havnt spent us because we still have a policy of “no capital outlay”…

We’ve spent the Carroll money, so now we only have money for transfers from what we have sold or released. Unless its a young youth player with resale value.

So far we have sold Best and Foster for around 4mil.

More or less what we supposedly bid for Debuchy.

We won’t spend big money on anyone over 25 because of their poor future resale value. If we do, I expect them to be sold after a couple seasons before their value drops.

      (Quote)

  26. SouthernRed

It’s refreshing to get opposition supporters coming on and having fair debate. We had some decent Spuds on her last season too.

      (Quote)

  27. It’s an astute explananion. It’s just not what’s happening.
If we got Debuchy, Douglas and Anita that might be a combined cost of say £18m. That leaves £2m + £5m from Best etc + money from the sale ofBa.
Even if that is as low as £3.5m that’s £10.5m in total – we got Cisse for less than that. Not forgetting we may also sell Simpson and other players yet.

And what’s to stop them just getting in Debuchy and Douglas and just holding off on the Anita transfer, in the above example?
That way two players get into the squad straight away and were only waiting on one. That would more than be enough to cover any eventualities of Ba being sold.

  28. It was the initial level headed responses to the article that caught my eye really and then it just seemed to be a good topic with sound comments. I thought it might be good to have a red view on it without the usual ‘fan’ style of posting a load of abuse and legging it. I know our club isn’t perfect, far from it of late, but i have fought AC’s corner for some time to fans of other clubs and id be really frustrated if we let him go now. Although i don’t agree with what Pardew said, we would be huge hypocrites if we got on our high horse and really kicked off. Managers do this kind of thing, part and parcel of modern football i think sadly.

      (Quote)

  29. Pootle,

Exactly. Everyone keeps mentioning a new striker because it excites fans and sells papers.
We’ll only buy a quality striker if one leaves. Otherwise we’ll be fortunate to sign two defenders.

  30. JJ aye but did we not give jonas and colo long contracts they are at the wrong end of twenty, maybe we might sell them now then if we are right into buy young to sell on later cannot see us getting a return on what they cost us now 😉
by the way mate how you ploughing on with the young!n getting any joy?

I think there will always be the odd exception. Maybe Ashley feels it would cost more to replace them with players of equal ability.

  32. Southern Red@189, I feel you are right on that ,it’s gotten so cut throat since the days befor the PL. Money rules everything now and teams like Chelsea and Citeh are ruining the game ,turning it on it’s head .It’s all out of control with regards wages ,transfer fees and it will all go tits up for a lot of clubs .We already seen the start of it with Rangers and Portsmouth and there is sure to be more to follow. From my point of view I’m happy for Toon not to break the bank for players as I want us to remain stable and keep existing ,though I do think some of our bids leave alot to be desired mind.
Out of interest how do you feel about the whole Suarez affair last year?. I know from reading red forums they are unhappy with him mouthing off about it again. From my point of view ,I feel he did Liverpool a lot of PR damage tbh.

      (Quote)

  33. RED clubs now are behind the eight-ball,what to do change managers to try and bring some glory which costs a arm and leg all the compo spent on clearing him out along with all his staff, then the new wants his players in and staff more cash spent, would it be better to give him half the cash to try and improve the team, its a funny old game mate 😉

      (Quote)

  34. Sorry JJ didn’t see your post, but, yeah I think your explanation is a far more likely to be a cause for the lack of movement than Machiavellian master plotting by Ashley or Llambias.

I’m not sure if we have a ‘no capital outlay’ policy but it looks like we may have an ‘as little as possible’ policy.

Trumpet, your explanation can’t give a reason why we haven’t bought at least one of the players that you mentioned?

      (Quote)

  39. hahah don’t worry, I’m well used to the endearing bin dipper reference,…to be honest, I’ve heard worse on other forums!

To touch upon a couple of things, i think you are right in the way the game is going. Sad to see Pompey and Rangers going the way they are and i think more will join them, as you say. I think Dave ‘mouthpiece’ Whelan said recently that he wants to see wage capping brought in, which is what I’ve been saying for ages but i can’t see Blatter/Platini doing it…mainly as it just makes sense and they appear to be dead against anything of that ilk.

The Suarez thing was awful, huge PR disaster as you say. On one hand i think it was an unfortunate clash of cultures as it seems the south american lads weren’t aware of the effect it would have over here but then the club should have done more to educate them too. The way it was handled with Kenny and the handshake was a joke too but every time i see something about it now (i think he said something last week) i cringe. Just let it go, Luis!! the sooner its left in the past the better but the more he goes on about it, the worse it looks. Awesome player like, but needs to be given more guidance from the club with regards to the media if you ask me.

Anyway, enjoyed the banter on here, you boys are a good bunch and its a shame more forums can’t integrate club fans like this….maybe one day eh 😉

  40. No pootle i agree as far as the cb is concerned. but i think if we didn’t have some other cisse esq bargain lined up than i can understand holding fire on debuchy and other positions. Even if we managed a decent 10 mill striker we would still be a striker short.
Tbh i think debuchy is a luxury signing and the majority of our transfer funds should be ready for the worst case scenario of ba leaving.
Don’t understand the cb as well as we need a player in there regardless.

Simpson has been ok for us and is consistently decent at defending but Debuchy is better. How much we need him largely depends on how tight the fat controllers pockets are, I guess.
