What is a fair price for Andy Carroll?

What price for Andy Carroll?
So another day, and another twist in the protracted saga that is Andy Carroll’s future.

Will he stay at Anfield? Will he leave for pastures new, or indeed not so new? I’m personally not sure, although it seems as though Carroll is only keen on leaving, either temporarily or permanently, is a club can offer European football.

Alan Pardew attracted a lot of criticism from Liverpool fans during the week as he said pretty much what everyone know and stated that Liverpool are going to have to take a hit if they want to offload their misfiring forward. The rights and wrongs of that have been discussed already, but with Liverpool wanting somewhere in the region of £20m I’m just wondering what a realistic price would be for the most expensive Englishman of all time?

Currently Carroll is rated at £13.5m by Transfermarkt.co.uk which values players on current form. Whether it’s right or wrong is up for debate but I’d personally question it.

Of course it’s all a matter of opinion but I happen to think that Carroll, based on his last 18 months, is worth no more than £10m. You can call potential as much as you like, but he had that at Newcastle and has so far failed to fulfil it at Liverpool so why should it be a consideration now?

I just think there is a premium being put on the price of Andy Carroll’s head by Newcastle fans based on nothing other than the fact he is a Geordie who did well for us for two half seasons – one in the Championship and one in the Premier League. I keep saying this but would people be happy to spend £20m on Kevin Davies who has outscored Carroll in a weaker team? Though not…

End of the day it’s a pointless argument I guess. No fans have any real say as to what goes on during transfer negotiations and we aren’t privvy to information that is flying around boardrooms currently, plus it’s not actually our money which I guess makes it easier to spend.

So, purely theoretical as I don’t believe Carroll will be leaving Liverpool anyway, what value would you put on his head if you were making the decision to sign him or not?

P.S: For any Liverpool fans wondering why this has been written, ask your manager who started all of this!

  1. Actually, Colin’s got a point. For a club that’s on the wrong end of so much media bollocks, we’re being a bit quick to believe it here.

Can someone dig out the Rogers quote? I seem to remember it was one of those where he didn’t really say anything contentious… but it was hard to see any other meaning but “I’d love to offload Avatar…”

  2. Based on how he has played for the last season and a half, Carroll is worth maybe 12 million. But like others have said, for that price we should get players that can fit into our squad better rather than a 4th center forward

  3. @aussie.. I won’t resort to name calling… it is just wrong… like you are lol!

Back to Carroll I guess Newcastle were just getting us back for the two great former Liverpool managers you ended up with and for allowing you to beat us to the signings of Michael Owen, Carl Court and Sylvain Marveaux.

  4. ICE PUP??? and you continue to be offensive to others… Nice. The bottom line is, if it transpires that NUFC sign AC for £20m you would be more than happy with rhe £15 profit and you get your darling boy back. i would feel the same about Torres. some players just fit in better at certain clubs… feel free to enlighten me on what debate I have lost… BTW my bin-dippers response was not directed at you Aussie magpie fan, more a general comment on the generic latched upon viewpoints from certain others…

  5. Andy mag… you must be so proud… Didn’t see it covered by sky Sports… i guess tractor pulling must have received priority…

  6. Colin – Pardew was asked “what do you make of the Carroll situation?” and he answered honestly, he doesnt believe that a club will meet Lpools valuation of Carroll and if they want to draw an end to the circus that surrounds the Carroll situation, they would need to sell him for less. Personally, I’d sooner he just said, nowt to do with me, ask them!. But to suggest his response could be seen as tapping up is ridiculous mate.
However, Redknap was NOT asked, “do you know if Demba Ba has a clause in his contract?”. He spoke completely out of turn about Ba. From memory, Redknap was asked “do you regret not going for Ba?”.
Pardew was being honest, something Redknap can’t rarely be accused of being.

  7. @mat.. As a fellow Liverpool fan… it might be clichéd but please “calm down” don’t turn some harmless name calling in to a John Terry incident.

  8. mat i seriously mean nothing more than banter if u take it to heart your on the wrong blog if i wanted to offended u i would need to know u which i dont

but to come on a newcastle blog is like me going on a liverpool one u are going to take some flak

The trophy is far more lucrative than the league cup 😉 , the press are very biased so rarely report on us for good news(ie wins and signings) but is happy to report when we lose a friendly game or sell a player.

  10. @sharpy, you are entitled to your opinion. I did not however suggest what he said was in anyway tantamount to tapping up… I’ll leave that sort of stuff to Harry (brown enveloped) Redknapp.

  11. Mat, I guess that was why the irony was lost on me.. If a fellow Toon supporter calls a Liverpool fan a disparaging name, it does not nessesarily reflect my thoughts. Just like some of my views are not accepted by others on here. Which is fine by me. I just find it hard debating with people like Colin because they have so much trouble admiting they are wrong 🙂

  12. Colin @ 83 – I wouldn’t include Marveaux in that list just yet. He’s looked pretty handy in pre-season! Could come back and bite you in the ****. 😆

  13. or a Suarez one… I;m sorry if my comments have been interpreted as rash and retaliatory..they are not… if you look back at my comments, I have shown a genuine interest in NUFC fans views and opinions… Cleary, i am going to respond to comments made… its a blog… Rafa’s so called ‘rant’ condemnation comes to mind… No worries though…

  14. @Aussie Okay.. okay… I admit I am wrong…. mat SHOULD stay upset with the nasty name calling and I am going to take my ball home now as well. Andy Carroll was massively overpriced and could only hope to repay that sort of fee if he could help us win a trophy that is shaped like a bridge! 🙂

Every word of this is utter bollocks
“Pardew and Ben Arfa don’t see eye to eye” where the f-ck did they get that from, Alan is one of the few managers that Hatem hasn’t had a ‘bust up’ with, HBA is loved on tyneside and he’s said that he’s enjoying his football at Newcastle. Not to mention that the Arshavin link makes no sense, too old, wages are too high and not any better than we already have, would rather give Marv and Sammy a chance.
    Pup
    Cheers mate 😉

  18. zulu… On that basis, lets hope Ashley pays £100m ha ha thinking, oh! goody, I’ll get the £25m sell-on fee to buy more Sports Direct stores… Cleary, there would be a stipulation in the contract to prevent this.. pls FSG!

  26. to Colin and Mat ,Out of interest if liverpool wanted Torres back what do you feel would be a fair price ?

      (Quote)

  27. Colin – you seem to have a blind loyalty, whereby you fail to acknowledge anything that shows LFC in a bad light in anyway shape or form. I think you are taking what’s being said alittle out of context. Nobody is saying Lpool are actively looking to sell Carroll, but every club have a value for a player and while Lpool may not have released a price list – you would be deluded if you think Lpool have not told interested parties what they expect for Carroll. Rodgers, may not have said I want to sell Carroll but he also hasn’t said I see Carroll as a major part of the squad. He has always said ‘Andy is happy here at Lpool’ he’s never fully backed him.
As for the Swansea agreement, Swansea confirmed it and Rodgers acknowledged it and justified it with the amount they are offering for the player. But if you haven’t seen that – then it obviously didn’t happen 🙄 😆

      (Quote)

  28. @kimtoon, I personally would be happy to fork out the £35m we paid for Andy.. even now even after the season he just had. Torres was a fantastic player who broke a number of long standing goal scoring records for Liverpool. Off the pitch he was a poster boy and great advert for the club. I’m not one of these fans who hates him because he left… He said he wanted to win stuff and to be fair he did… he didn’t slag off the club he just told the truth. unfortunately he, like Carroll, went to a club that consistently has senior managerial changes and he suffered like Andy as a result. He was the most exciting player we have had for years and I was gutted when he left. I really like Andy Carroll too and would be gutted if he left… there is something about him that makes me think it is going to come good. Michael Owen on the other hand….. I’ll just not even go there.

      (Quote)

  29. Andy Carroll is worth 8 million max, but West Ham porn barons might pay more
we can forget that Liverpool paid 35 million as they rinsed Chelsea with the Torres fee anyway, if I were a liverpool fan I’d be gutted at the fact Daglish was responsible for some of the worst buys in thier history – Carroll, Adams, Downing, Henderson and to top it all bought a racist diving buck toothed cheat in Suarez (tho at least he can actually play football and was prob worth his fee :))

Wouldnt have Carroll back personally, he’s gash and should play for Stoke

      (Quote)

  30. Great question kimtoon. AC’s value is only going to go up, wheras Torres’ at 27/8 won’t have a sell on value above £50m ever again… i think a better question would be, would i return to a point before the sales and ‘yes’ I certainly would.

      (Quote)

  31. Mat-Do you honestly think Carroll’s value will go up? 😯

Fair play, its possible he might hit 35 mil again if he has an amazing season and you lot build your squad around him, but nobody would ever rate him over 35 mil…..agree on torres though.

      (Quote)

  32. Newkie@120-

Pienaar was only ever going to go back to Everton. He was stellar there, then sat on the bench at Spurs, then played well again on loan at Everton last year. I think he’s comfortable there, and it was easy for Everton to welcome him back.

      (Quote)

  33. Colin@6 I would refer you to the article Highlighted blue 4th down at the start of this article titled ‘ Does pardew have a right to tell Liverpool to cut their losses’ .You will see that most of us were not happy with his comments and maybe you should rethink your “but rather hypocritically none of you seem that bothered with Pardews comments” snipe.

Colin@19 “One good season and you think your world beaters” ,now you are starting to sound like a bitter Mackem . Truth is noone on here thinks that we leave that to the likes of you.By the way when was it you last won the PL exactly ? 😉

      (Quote)

  34. Charlie-Wouldn’t have hurt to try though. We should have tried to loan him and even now we could have at least competed. Definitely worth 5mil, even if he has no sell on value.

    Plus he’s a toon fan…we’d have some pull! 😉

      (Quote)

  35. @Mat, I’d completely disagree with you there m8, Andy’s value is at least as likely to go down as it is to go back up. He doesn’t find his form soon, by this time next year there’d be no question of him being worth anything more than £5 million.

Right now you lot value him at £20 million, in my book a £20 million striker should be getting 15-20 goals a season just to hold onto that price tag. right now what’s keeping his price artificially high is memories of past form (with Newcastle 😉 ) but he can’t trade on that forever.

      (Quote)

  36. COLIN… i know where you’re at with MO, you but can’t ignore what he did for us. true, he’s a mercenary and you’d nver see him alongside robbie and ian on the north american tour ha ha! i think winning the CL the season after he left kinda makes the two parties quits… as for joining MUFC, well… perhaps we should chat about this on an LFC blog ha ha!

i really rate AC, his touch is brilliant, he is commanding and can destroy any central partnership… he has to be kept cos he gives us something no other club has. A very costly sub, but one that could turn games we fail to capitalise on dominance.

Torres should be back at liverpool where he was loved, but with the ‘new’ owners, we could perhaps live up to his own ambitions… it won’t happen until we’re back in the CL and then he’ll be over 30!!! Borinni, Suarez, Ramirez… Gerrard, Allen, Lucas… Could be worse.

      (Quote)

  37. Very funny thread lads…thanks for the laugh:).

I rate Carroll at 10m. I’d maybe go to 12m but have real concerns about how he’d fit into the club both on and off the pitch

      (Quote)

  38. the bindippers are talking as though Pards is as stupid as Dogleash, 35 mill was the joke of last season just behind henderson and downing, we dont need andy carrol and we dont need to be paying more than the 8-10 mill he’s worth.
i almost forgot about charlie (the crab) adam pmsl, lfc is deluded and living off 80’s success, when you win the league, The Premier league as were now in 2012 you can start demanding silly money for average players who helpen you win it.

      (Quote)

  39. Actually I reckon downing was a worse signing than Carroll…Carroll is actually a decent player and looked to have plenty of potential…Downing is and always has been gash.

Henderson was just ridiculous…American stat buy I think.

      (Quote)

  40. @Kimtoon I think you need to read the blog items above and below and get some context….both on what I was on about and whether or not i am a delusional scouser. We have won the premier league as many times as you guys… none… and are as close to winning it this year as you guys…. so basically not a chance. If Andy and Jose left your club as they thought they had more chance of winning things at Liverpool then that is their opinion… the fact they both won a none bridge shaped trophy is by the by. I read somewhere Andy left as he wanted to live somewhere that he could park his car and it would not get tampered with outside his mates house… but Liverpool outbid Spurs so he was screwed.

      (Quote)

  41. On topic , I would say his value is around £12m as he’s English which always increases the price right or wrongly. Would I have him back ,yes as he offers something different . Would I pay 18 or 20m for him ,no, but it’s not my money and mike can do what ever he wishes with his money and that includes walking away from the deal. 😉

      (Quote)

  42. Totally agree Newkie… Pound for pound Downing is by far worse and decreasing his value more and more… Charlie Adam too with recent events. Downing is techincally good, but appears to lack any confience and application…

  46. Look can we just accept that last season Dalglish went too far trying to disprove the tight fisted Scotsman tag? He could have just pointed to Berbatov and Veron and the rest at OT but no… he went and spanked the lot to prove a point. Adam’s stats show he had more successful passes to Reina than any other Liverpool player… we could only wish he was crab quality.

  47. Hendo will come good. Techincally brilliant, just needs confience and maturity… Definte parallels with Lucas…

  48. 5mn + add on. However, since he is English by born & therefore “Home Grown”, EPL clubs ‘ll need him to fill the 25 player quota. Technically, he is as ordinary & skill-less as Emil Heskey, but Heskey had far better work ethics & lifestyle.

I put another 7mn for his biggest asset – his passport. 12mn & add on. I think NUFC had a fair offer of 12mn for that donkey & Rogers would have definitely off loaded him, but it’s just that BR can’t take a 23mn loss for his predecessor’s stupendous stupidity.

      (Quote)

  49. Mat-Exactly…C Adam was overpriced as well but in comparison with Downing he still looks a decent buy. He just seemed a strange one as he was never going to be a first teamer.

Gadgfield-Not saying he’s a 35 mil player…just that in the circumstances when he was bought it wasn’t that ridiculous a bid as Downing IMO given that he promised so much yet Downing is still very much the same player… 😉

      (Quote)

  50. Colin@138 I don’t think I have taken any thing out of context tbh . You did say none of you seemed that bothered didn’t you?.

I just get fed up with Liverpool fans accusing us of double standards and thinking we are world beaters because of one good season . I happen to think we are one of the more realistic set of fans as regards where we are and where we are headed.

I love the way it always starts with the ‘my dads bigger than your dad’ crack them ultimately ends ‘ok, they are about the same size’ – ie you have as much chance of success this season as us.
Think the bulk of my dislike comes from the old LFC like Hansen, Lawro and Thompson.

It’s gonna be another interesting season I think
