Fee agreed for Remy

Closing in on Remy
Closing in on Remy
Newcastle United have agreed a fee for Marseille attacker Loic Remy, according to club president Vincent Labrune.

The fee agreed is believed to be in the region of €10m-€10.5m (or £8.2m-£8.7m in good old pounds sterling) which by my reckoning would make Remy the third most expensive signing Mike Ashley has made at Newcastle following the purchase of Fabricio Coloccini and Papiss Cisse.

It is understood that Remy, who supposedly said goodbye to his soon-to-be former colleagues prior to Marseille’s game against Sochaux, will now travel to Newcastle to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical ahead of sealing a move potentially as early as the start of this week.

“We have reached an agreement in principle with Newcastle and we have given Loic permission to hold talks with them. We are now waiting on developments,” Labrune told AFP.

Meanwhile former Magpie midfielder Joey Barton, who now plies his trade at Stade Velodrome, took to Twitter to have his say on the matter. He basically said that a move to St James’ Park would be good for the player and wished him the best although if you want to read the actual words they are quoted below.

“Good luck to Loic in Newcastle. Don’t worry I’ve told him what to expect. Great guy. Perfect club for him. #toonarmy”

The “I’ve told him what to expect” part could be interesting given Barton’s well publicised falling out with the United hierachy… Of course I may be being a little sceptical there and Barton could just as easily be talking about our fanatical fanbase.

The 26-year-old would add some much required attacking versatility to the squad. Remy can play as a striker, winger or one of the wide attackers in a front three, which is how I see him being utilised with Hatem Ben Arfa on the other side firing in the chances for central striker Papiss Cisse to knock home. In an ideal world anyway. It was clear at Norwich on Saturday that we need some creativity…

It’s not a done deal yet, not by any stretch and a potential medical issue with the players heart may yet come into play, as could a failure to agree personal terms, but I don’t feel the latter will be too much of a problem. It’s not often agents don’t know what kind of deal is on the table before a player travels to complete the formalities. I doubt the heart problem will be a problem either but you never know…

hopefully we’ll have confirmation soon enough…

  1. Wellington – I don’t get your point? If they stay up is it worth it and if we go down would it have been worth not paying it? I’m not saying we should pay him that – we shouldn’t but if Reading, Villa, Wigan and Sunderland (who are buying) all decide to approach the window in similar vain as QPR what do we do?

I just think at the minute with Colo wanting to leave, Ba leaving, HBA saying without ambition he’ll leave and now one of our biggest relegation rivals taking players from under our noses, there is a momentum building and unfortunately its going in the wrong direction!

  2. Kim – they have already started crawling out from under their stinking stones, The grief was disgusting this morning.
4 points and 2 places above us and they think they are top dogs again.
Its all a bit gauling tbh.
    Bunch of knuts. 👿

  3. Stuart – you wrote, “Other clubs know we are really desperate now – what happens to the prices of other players?”

They don’t, and the prices are not radically changed.

This is a constant problem for you: transfering your own panic over to everyone else. If you read the views other posters were expressing, they’re more of the “Well, that’s annoying” camp. (I happen to think they’re over-reacting as well, but I do acknowledge that I am in a decided minority by remaining calm.)

      (Quote)

  4. BB – you mean “galling”. “Gauling” is what we’re doing to the team by signing all these Frenchmen. 😉

  5. I have read on one or two sites now (mainly Ed’s blog) that we are in talks with Burnley for Charlie Austin for £8.5m.

I’d take Austin but I am not sure about the fee – for that, I’d go for Gary Hooper who is scoring goals in Champions League against the top teams.

  6. Wellington – Sorry I think you’re looking at it wrong. I’m looking at it from a selling clubs point of view. We desperately needed at least one striker this January – we’re even more desperate now which sellings clubs know. Are you really telling me you don’t expect selling clubs to increase their asking price or drag the sale out to make us even more desperate? If you think they’ll be all “ah don’t worry Derek, I know you’ve lost your leading scorer, missed out on your no 1 target and only have two weeks to sort it out but here you go, I’ll sell you this player for a bargain” you don’t know how business works.

Also who said I’m panicking? I actually said I wouldn’t have matched it – but I’m also looking at the consequences of this.

Some people need a reality check I’m afraid.

  7. Cc I could not agree more.

Qpr have swung in offered ridiculous wages and bang the lads scarpered. Disgrace if he really had the contract and then turned his back on them.

However if qpr have a clause for relegation it makes perfect sense for the lad to go. How big an impact could this have on Ben arfa cabaye

Worrying times we seem to have been chasing remy a long time so we need to move quick if he’s off to qpr

  9. So if QPR are relegated and he is allowed to leave, who’s going to match those wages? I guess he better hope for the best. Been reading all day…gotta say that I really wish things could just flow normally at NUFC…get’s frustrating watching this stuff.

  12. my feelings exactly Kim.
**** him.I’d rather the club break the bank for better, than chase this lad.
Could all be horlicks tho. Wont know ’til he signs on the line somewhere.
What will be will be. 😕

      (Quote)

  13. Stuart – you have been proclaiming that we’re desperate and about to be taken to the cleaners for the whole transfer window. That is the basis on which I say you’re panicking. (Just so your question is answered explicitly.)

While it’s correct that someone here needs a reality check, it’s you. The extent to which you’ve taken leave from reality is striking even in this latest bunch of nonsense. Taken from the top, you seem to have learned your style of argument from Goebbels: just keep repeating your lies until people agree with you. Even so, I think the fascist would have been a bit more subtle – hasn’t anyone ever taught you a synonym for desperate? *

Nor is your command of the facts any better. The club’s #1 target was Debuchy, who was signed. You remember that, don’t you? Even after he’s signed, a striker is not the club’s most pressing need: we actually a need a pacey attacker (and arguably, a central defender is even more important). Finally, while there is a glimmer of truth about the attitude of selling clubs, you’re so overwhelmed by your anxiety that you fail to take into account not just the basic business teaching of having a plan B, but also the club’s contact with its alternative options that has been leaked to the press. (And for everything the press talks about, there’s another three meetings they missed.)

*: If nobody ever did, then that is quite sad and I want to help. While the use of “desperately” was fine, you could have substituted the first use of desperate with, ” hard up” and basically didn’t need the second.

      (Quote)

  14. Wellington – Thanks for the psychology lesson – but I’ll stick to the real world thanks. I’m staggered that you think a pacey attacker is more important than a striker considering we lost someone who scored 50% of our goals… After that statement I feel the need to end this debate with you as its clear we’re on different intellectual plains – unfortunately for you you’re a few rungs down the intellectual ladder.

      (Quote)

  15. Stuart – actually, the pacy attacker is what Pardew said he wants:

“I would like, if possible, to have a player with real power and pace. Sometimes, we lack a little bit of pace,” he said this week. “Gabriel Obertan brings that to the team, but when Gabby is not in the team, that’s something I would like to see in the player that comes in because that will help Papiss Cisse” – http://soccernet.espn.go.com/blog/_/name/newcastleunited/id/479?cc=5739

Once again, you’re substituting your own thoughts for the real world. Please don’t let this overwhelm you at meal times! 🙁

  16. I’d suggest following PeteGravesSky on twitter. He is one of the SSN presenters and seems to be a Newcastle considering 90% of his tweets are about them. He’s likely as close to an “ITK” as we’ll get outside the paper writers.

  17. So QPR got Remy…right. But it’s their midfield and defence that are gash IMO. Anton Ferdinand ffs? And they’re losing their best CB in Nelson….Mackie, Cisse and Tarabt are good players, Mackie is very much like Best in that he’ll work his socks off and he’s got a bit of pace and power about him, and he’s unselfish. Cisse is their main goal threat with Tarabt as their creator, altho I guess Remy on the wing would have to be better than sean wright phillips….

Anyway move on, still can’t decide what kind of player we need….I’d say a pacey wingforward but Marveux is showing his talent and we have benny to come back….if Cisse gets injured we’ve got nobody to put the ball in the net…but can we afford to rely on Obertan and Jonas in the front of a 4-3-3 if the other two get injured….

      (Quote)

  18. Apparently Marseille’s director is saying 3 clubs (Newcastle, QPR and an unnamed team) are all talking and Remy has made no choice yet.

      (Quote)

  19. This is terrible news but what does it say about Remy’s character? If all it takes is more money we aren’t going to be able to compete. If they want to pay him 75K a week we’re not in the competition. Now what for us? Why don’t we bring in that CB we need straight away and think about whoever is number 2 on Carr’s striker list?

      (Quote)

  20. BBC are reporting Remy didn’t show up in Newcastle last night as expected. The club is supposedly extremely shocked by this. If the wage offer from QPR is anywhere near correct we can forget about him. Some reports saying he is having a medical with QPR tomorrow morning.

      (Quote)

  21. If he did not turn up to see us then he’s a **** and we should not waste our time with him.

I just hope they have a plan b & c lined up as well as a CB. If they dont, they are incompetent 😕

      (Quote)

  22. Yes Llambias pull out plans b and c. And do it quickly. How can we continue to offer far less wages than other clubs, even QPR, and expect to make good signings? With Llambias in there we continue to be in deep trouble. This one should be a slap to Ashley’s face. Wake up man.

  24. Tbh not too gutted about Remy, it’s not the board’s fault that QPR pay ridiculous wages, he’s not exactly been a goal machine and his attitude doesn’t seem brilliant. Plenty of alternatives

  25. The one thing I will say is that I f**king hate Redknapp. He is an annoying self important tw*t. All he’s ever won is the FA cup having spunked so much money that he destroyed Portsmouth forever.

He has mates in the media who will talk him up. Very few of them mention that he hardly set the world alight at West Ham, got Southampton relegated after a wretched run then dumped them to run Portsmouth’s wage bill up and leave them in a perilous situation.

    Ok rant over.

Overpriced? no thanks, lets see how much u ask for in the next window
Overpaid? go join Junior (and Loic) at QPR

Will we hold our nerve and stick to our principles as the window shuts… as the very real proposition of relegation (and a catastrophic loss of potential revenue) lurks ominously around the corner?

      (Quote)

  28. Statesidetoon,

After everything, it’d make me very nervous if Remy signed for the Toon still. His attitude could turn sour very quickly.
No doubt he will be asking for a “clause” in his contract.
Each time he gets paid, he will probably think, what he “could” have been getting at QPR.

Obviously I’m being pesimistic, but I think ‘Arry has ruined this for us even if Remy still joins. Probably best to move on to other targets.

I would have no problem moving on, IF I had any faith in the board actually recruiting someone hassle free – unfortunately I have NO FAITH in them…

It would be crazy to offer Remy more or even the same wages what Ba asked for.

Ba was a proven scorer in the premier league who said he would stay at the toon if they offered him £90k per week.

    And Remy wants £100k.

    No chance.

  38. Aussie,
I think with Remy’s lack of football, and the change in pace in the Premiership as it is, it could well take Remy 5 or six games to settle in and get up to speed.

For QPR, I hope that is five or six games too late. They have Wet Spam away and then Money Bags City at home their next two games.

They will be shitting bricks about relegation with players like:

Remy, Cisse, Hoilett, Barton, MVila, Park Ji-Sung, Nedum Onuoha, Shaun Wright-Phillips, José Bosingwa, all earning upward of 40k/week

There has never in my eyes been a more derserving team for relegation.

      (Quote)

  39. JJ, I agree, all that is know about Remy is that he is desperately out of form and he wants a move away from his current team. It is a huge gamble to pay such big wages on someone that has yet to prove himself. If he does leave if QPR are relegated, who is going to pay his high wages if he wants out?? He could quite easily stay with QPR and live off the fat.. Look at Xisco has done this well with us over the past 4 or 5 seasons…

    – Remy can go **** a pile of flaming cheese graters if he goes to that shed in the shithole of London just for even more piles of cash. Fucking waste of carbon emissions, that bloke. Let him **** off there to go down with the other money-grabbing fungi just as soon as ‘arry gets a better offer or has to flee the country for more stuff related to taxes and dogs.

    – Benny can stick his head up a flatulent rhino and breathe deep if he thinks it’s ok to scam millions off our club for years, put in just one decent season, get injured yet again, watch the club get into trouble and immediately ***** himself out to any other club that’s higher in the league and will take him. **** you, Benny; we’re better off without. You look great when you play, but you can count those occasions on your testicles.
