Sissoko signs on for six-and-a-half-years

Newcastle have made it four signings in four days and five in total this January with their latest addition, Moussa Sissoko, who signs from Toulouse on an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old has signed a six-and-a-half-year contract at St James’ Park after speculation earlier on in the week linked the player with a move in the summer when his contract expires and not now when a nominal fee would be payable.

That fee is believed to be in the region of £1.8 million taking our total spending to roughly just under £20 million although that figure is plucked from speculative figures mentioned in the local press. However, in the region of £1.8 million for a player who was being touted around for over £15 million just last season is not bad business at all.

I’ve not been worried about this transfer at all. The lad has made all the right noises from the start and it was always going to end our way when Toulouse effectively suspended the player earlier on in the week. However I’m mindful that no deal is done until the player is on the official website holding up the shirt, and as you can see from the picture above we are at that stage now.

Sissoko has been speaking to the official website about his move and how delighted he is to be joining what is becoming a French revolution at United.

“I am delighted to be a Newcastle United player,” said Sissoko. “This is a massive Club playing in the best league in the world, and I believe my style of play is suited to the Premier League.”

“I have heard lots about how fantastic the Newcastle supporters are and cannot wait to get started. I am rising to a new challenge by coming here and want to firstly help the team improve this season and then progress after that,” he added.

Alan Pardew also welcomed Sissoko to United and praised the players “drive and energy” which will help the squad.

“This transfer window has proved very productive for us and Moussa arriving today is a massive plus for the Club,” said Pardew.

“He will bring drive and energy to the squad, he is a winner and that’s why I’m especially pleased to have him with us.”

“What all our signings this window bring is essential competition for places and that is great for the remainder of the season,” Pardew concluded.

Sissoko signed for Toulouse aged just 14 and spent his formative years progressing through their youth ranks before making his debut in 2007. In total he made 218 appearances for Toulouse scoring 23 goals. Equally impressive is the fact that he is a full France international having earned six caps for Les Blues along with representing his country of birth at U16, U17, U18, U19 and U21 level.

The number 7 shirt is now owned by Sissoko who has been described as the closest thing to Patrick Viera since Patrick Viera and the long-term deal shows a lot of faith in the player from our side as well, no doubt, as a protection should other clubs come calling.

Good work all round!

  1. not putting any of the other players down, but this is the player I wanted the most we have not played for him we have stolen him for that money

  2. Toonsy – seriously excited about this one. I think he and Mapou will be the voices in the team weve been so badly missing – albeit they’ll be French speaking voices 😆
I think he’s going to be a huge player for us, and 6.5yrs with no sign on fee just shows the lads commitment and desire to be a toon player.

I said on the last post, my only worry is are these long term contracts with a ‘Ba like’ buy out clause? – hope not.

  3. The noises coming out of the new players is excellent, all seem winners with a real desire to play for Newcastle. Unless I am completely mistaken and our first signing of the week on Monday was Max Clifford

  6. Toonsy you can give the fingers a break now and get back to the palms again 😆 😆 Yeah im over the moon with him and Mbiwa, but I said the other day and I still feel the same in that I think Gouftran will be a surprise package, I just hope they bed in quickly but I think that even the lift our own players will get from seeing top players come in will stand us in good stead.

  8. Anyone know how Ed is getting on? Is he getting giddy with all these new players at the famous Newcastle club?

      (Quote)

  9. Moreno – that most recent lineup looks more likely. Just switch Tayls for Mbiwa and, sadly, Marveaux for Jonas… that’s what Pardew will go for.

      (Quote)

  10. Debuchy and Santon will both play like wing backs anyway no matter what so may as well go with three at the back when they are all fit..

      (Quote)

  11. True Moreno, but Taylor gets injured that often I don’t think we can plan on consistently starting with 3 CB’s.

Is Ben Arfa back for the next match?
I thought he was out til Feb?

      (Quote)

  12. Pootle – I reckon he’ll be back fot the Southampton game. Woukd he be brought back in against Chelsea or Spuds?

      (Quote)

  13. Well when Ben Arfa is fit I would play him and one of Gouffran or Marveaux on either side of Cisse. Jonas, Obertan and Shola can keep the bench warm until we can sell them.

  14. The Regime buy players like running buses.

You stand and wait and there’s not a player in sight. All of sudden 5 come at once! 😯

I’m pleased they’ve got their act together and also pleased they’ve gave Pardew every opportunity to see this through.

      (Quote)

  15. Pootle I think we should keep Jonas as I think the competition would do him good and he could be handy to have on the bench, Obertan I don’t think we’ll sell at a loss as I can’t see many giving us anywhere near what we paid as for Strolla I can’t see anyone taking him even for free 🙄

      (Quote)

  16. Collo is the captain at the moment, but I reckon ultimately Sissoko or Mapou will get the armband once they get settled in. Cabaye will come in a good fourth choice.

Ya beauty, you cannot have enough leaders in the team. Now we have a bunch of them with mad dog Debuchy also in there doing his bit. Great news for young Santon too who has shown great resilience for a 20 year old newcomer trying almost single handidly to get the lard-arses at the toon back on the right track.

    Howay the lads !!!

    p.s. Collo staying is like “having a new signing” .. 😆 😳 😳

      (Quote)

  17. So happy we got Sissoko. You should read some of the Scum comments ,on about us panic buying and signing a load of French nomarks 😆 Last week they all thought they had a chance of getting Sissoko 🙄 😳 😆

  18. The big plus for me this transfer window is that Troy has dropped that daft public warning from all of his posts 😆 😆

  19. Big D was complaining about lack of competition for places. Well it seems that has been taken care of in one fell swoop 🙂

  20. Could Alex Ferguson’s snide comment “Wee Club in the North East” and then later saying we should be a Giant Club, awoken Ashley to actually realise the potential and invest? or is this another false dawn?

      (Quote)

  21. Pootle,

I was just going on my ideal starting XI if all were fit. Ask me tomorrow and it would be different maybe…nice position to be in though!

I could swap Jonas in, Tiote for Anita, loads of options really. Form etc comes in to it too but yeah, always hard to be an armchair supporter.

I would actually start Shola over Papiss at the minute. Blind love of Shola aside I honestly truly would. One thing we know about Shola is that he can grab a goal. I think the hoofball to him where he has to run ten yards to win a header (and he usually does!) doesn’t give the lad a chance. As people have been saying about Cisse all season.

I reckon that sumptious ball by Debuchy straight into Cisse at Reading, Shola would have smashed it straight in. Blind love of Shola aside, you all know I am speaking the gospel.

  22. MM @ 25 yeah im glad the Regime eventually agreed with the ones that said we needed top Players in 😉 I wonder if we’ll see any that were saying we didn’t need players except maybe a CB complain that the Regime is wasting money on these players since we don’t need them 😉 😕 ❓ nah I can’t see it happening 😀

      (Quote)

  23. Lyle @ 26 no I think it was the thought of losing out on the bumper tv money next season and knowing that a lot of support would have fell away if we were relegated

      (Quote)

  24. Good window for sure. These players could have been purchased in the summer for larger fees so we will need to see which division we are playing in next season before we can say it has been good business. MA has roled the dice so let’s hope the gamble pays off 😉

      (Quote)

  25. MM I think you might be onto something there, as after his talk in the comments he made about Ba and the problems it caused in the dressing room sound very like some of the comments that I and a couple of others made on here 😉 😉

I thought we might have seen Richie on 😥 RICHIE where are ye you baldy big *****

French league side Bastia have now rejected a £2.5m offer from Newcastle for midfielder Florian Thauvin, who ccelebrates his 20th birthday on Saturday.

The player will remain at the Corsican club until at least the end of the current season, although he’s declined the opportunity to sign an extended deal – Thauvin is under contract with Bastia until 2014.”…

“With the black and white shirt, I think it will match me perfectly. And you’ll see a really handsome Sissoko on the pitch!”

😆 😆 😆 😆 I take it he never took any sports direct vouchers of Jabba then 😀

  29. This should be a lesson to those that attack Ashley for not spending. He did not break the bank but got quality players.

    Pardew has no excuses now.

  30. MM I think he was on after Ba ? maybe but I haven’t seen him about for over a week , maybe he had a big meal and is sleeping it off 😆

      (Quote)

  31. Big D, Sissoko has a bit of a look like Clarence Seedorf about him. If he’s only half as good as him then we’ve signed a brilliant midfield motor.

      (Quote)

  32. MM – I’m pleased in a way mate. £2.5m is way too much to pay for a player – stupid money really 😆 😆
Be interesting to see if we go back for him or turn our attentions elsewhere.

      (Quote)

  33. My thoughts are that we will be playing 4-3-3 this season and possibly switching to 3-4-3 next year.

    So
    Krul
    Debuchy – MYM – Colo – Santon
    Cabaye – Tiote – Sissoko
    HBA – Gouffran
    Cisse

    That looks good to me.

      (Quote)

  34. Ice I don’t think subway would have enough for him 😆 😆

MM funny I thought he looked a bit like Seedorf, I can remember yrs back we were in for him and it was a player I would love us to have got

      (Quote)

  35. Michael 12 I haven’t really doubted that Ashley would splash the cash. I just wasn’t convinced he trusted Pardew to pick out the players. We’ve been proven wrong in the nicest of possible ways 🙂

Should we all be getting squidgy about Carr ? Did he do the biz here after all ?

      (Quote)

  36. Prem,

I saw my brothers line-up and asked him the same as I will ask you..

Why Gouffran? What is it you know about him that elevates him into that position over others?

  37. @MM

I was politely asked by Toonsy to get rid of the disclaimer. 😉

Or I would be banned! 😯

Got to admit I need it more than ever with B&B having the biggest hissy fit in history with me. 😛

    I may have to put a new one up;

THIS IS A WARNING ISSUED BY THE WORLD GOVERNING BODIES OF BLOGS.
HISSY FITS CAN SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOUR REPUTATION. 😛 😛

  38. Big D, Seedorf is one of the greatest midfielders of all time. The bloke is still going strong at almost 40. Not sure where it is, but it is in one of the top leagues somewhere. The bloke was and is immense.

      (Quote)

  39. Troy@48 😆 😆 Saw you had your lad on the ropes a few weeks ago… that looks like you off the Christmas Card list .. 😥

      (Quote)

  40. Moreno – valid question, and I think if we do throw Gouffran straight in there and almost discard Marv then he’ll want away – and probs rightly so.
    I’d probs go:

    ————– Krul ————-
    Deb – MYM – Colo – Santon
    ——- Cabs —– Anita ——
    Gouffran – Sissoko – Marv
    ———— Cisse ————

That’s what I’d go for against Villa, then when Benny is fit and Tiote is back it would be down to fitness and form as to who gets in for me.

      (Quote)

  41. This should be a lesson to those that attack Ashley for not spending. He did not break the bank but got quality players.
    Pardew has no excuses now.”

Er, I think most people attacked Ashley for not buying at least some of these players in the summer.
When we clearly (to the sensible folk) needed them.

He’s only doing it now cos we are close to a precipice.

That said, I agree that Pardew has run out of excuses.

      (Quote)

  42. We have so many good footballers in the side now that we won’t need Pardew’s tactical nous… 😳

      (Quote)

  43. Cannot see Marv hacking it for another season on the bench to be honest. Don’t think he has the power to oust the full strength midfield..

      (Quote)

  44. I just don’t get the hype on Gouffran for him to walk in front of Marv who, despite my recent criticism of labeling him a ‘flop’ – come to that in a minute – has been fantastic the past few games and is really STARTING to show why we signed him.

I labelled him a flop as we have had him a while and it’s only recently he has strung a few games together where he hasn’t just been ‘solid’ he has been inventive and has a real eye for a pass. So I stand by that statement although I am being turned. Yes he was free, but signing on fees and over a years worth of decent wages don’t equate to ‘free’ for me. Hope he keeps it up. Always delighted to be proven wrong when I criticise.

      (Quote)

  45. Troy you’ll not need it for B+B now sure he wouldn’t lower himsel to talk to the likes of you, and I think I might be joining that list with you soon enough 😉

      (Quote)

  46. Pootle,

It all comes down to him wanting to save a couple of million by biding his time. Great strategy and that worked.

Yet on the negative side he will lose a couple of million in league places…possibly more with what a couple of signings could have done earlier.

    Any better off?

      (Quote)

  47. Coz he’s new, adds pace to the attack, and can score goals. I agree that he is competeing with marv & Obertoon for that slot thogh.

Isn’t it nice to be able to argue about who we want in rather than who we want out of the team.

      (Quote)

  48. Yeah Sharpy. I would go for a set up like that bit with Cabaye and Sissoko as the two midfielders further back. I would expect them to add more steel and Anita to get forward more in attack. To be honest as long as those three are in midfield though, i’ll be happy.

      (Quote)

  49. Marveaux and Obertan made a very effective duo in the past month or so. Now place them in with this lot and our current French mob and we should see the best of them.

The best of these signings are they are first teamers that also flesh out the squad at the same time. Some of our squad players can become first teamers as we now have players who can bring the best out of them.

Our Europa League teams should be a hell of a lot stronger now.

      (Quote)

  50. Villa fan post.

Newcastle are on the verge of signing Sissoko so he may play against us in next league game. Don’t worry though, we can put Bannan on him while Delph takes care of Tiote. I really don’t know why we all seem so worried. Mondax.

    poor old Villa eh

      (Quote)

  51. mm @ 58 I was thinking about that today, if we do well it will be the players that get all the credit but when we don’t do too well it will be Pards that takes the blame.

Moreno TBH I think Marv has a lot of potential but I seen him having to make way for Jonas all season even though Jonas was offering the team nowt really, so I still see Jonas getting in ahead of Marv even if Marv offers more, which is something I don’t like to see happen

      (Quote)

  52. Want a great rumour?

Just read that we are putting in a bid for David Villa as he has apparently handed in a transfer request. He is being watched by Arsenal, who have a French manager, so we are apparently taking that as a close enough link.

Imagine how ludicrous it would be if we got Villa on loan or something to play with Cisse, lol

  53. “It all comes down to him wanting to save a couple of million by biding his time. Great strategy and that worked.
Yet on the negative side he will lose a couple of million in league places…possibly more with what a couple of signings could have done earlier.”

True, but you are severely understating the potential negative side. We could still easily be relegated. Newcastle will implode if that happens.

A lot now depends on Pardews coaching.
He’s a man who takes around three months to spot when his favourite formation isn’t working when most fans can see it after six games or so.
He thinks Jonas deserves to start in front of Marveaux and Shola can play right wing even though a car with a wheel clamp has more movement.

      (Quote)

  54. Millwall are about to knock Villa out the FA Cup.

After Bradford beating them in the League Cup, they are going to be rock bottom to play us.

    We HAVE to win this.
