Transfer Wrap – January 2015

Well here we go again, no new players in and a heap of fringe players out. These transfer windows are no longer a source of potential excitement as we wait for new players to be signed. Actually, they are less like a window and more like an exit door at the moment. Most of the younger players we have loaned out have been no where near the first team this season so if they get first team action at Rangers it can only be a good thing as far as I am concerned. The lack of incoming players has always been a source of frustration and anger and that is set to continue as the season enters it’s later stages. For the record here is what transpired for all clubs.

Well there it is.. One thing that stands out is that clubs seem to be shedding a lot of players to lower division English clubs and abroad. It’s interesting to see Spurs and Liverpool were also clubs not to open the cheque book this window. Maybe the financial fairplay rules are having an effect??

Anyway, it is as you were (minus a few players) for Newcastle and it will be interesting to see how the rest of the season plays out. We can only hope that we are not hit with too many injuries over the last stretch of games. We have Abied, Aarons and DeJong on the cusp of being fit enough to get a start in the first team again so there is a sliver of light at the the end of the tunnel.

  1. Troy@370, Terry@372, lads it’s an absolute tragedy that someone can be so apparently soleless. ffs we are talking about a club that belongs to the people at the end of the day. He is the owner, but the spirit of the club belongs to the people. Without the fans the club would be nothing. He could SO EASILY re-engage the connection to the fans. But he just doesn’t get it, he is made from different stuff… that’s why he is a gazillionaire, because he is different. Hats off to him for that too, I am in awe of someone who can build something the way he has at SD, and in such a short space of time, absolutely phenomenal. Johnny Craver, Steve Stone and Peter Beardsley would do their jobs for nowt, the fans will turn up in there thousands, thousands of people will travel away to watch the toon, spending a fortune to watch absolute *****.

    But something has to change.

      (Quote)

  2. Terry@373, that’s the frustrating thing, Ashley has the credentials to be a fantastic owner, but he just doesn’t get it. I genuinely think he enjoys owning the toon, going to the matches and seeing the toon win.
He is probably disappointed when we lose, but at a different intensity to the people living in the “goldfish bowl”…

  3. Kimtoon@355, the twitter posting by that bloke Joey Barton @355 is quite interesting, but also quite normal in Germany. In comparison to the UK German fans, or “ultras” are way out there totally militant, and support the fans like crazy, through thick and thin, but don’t like it one bit when they have the feeling the club and players aren’t pulling there weight.
You will see the same things happening in Frankfurt (totally wild), Berlin, Cologne, Schalke, Dortmund and Stuttgart. The fans really are RIGHT behind the team. When it starts to go wrong they also engage and want to voice an opinion..

Joey Barton should also know that from his time spent in Marseille, which is a club really close to the hearts of the people. The people in Marseille live for the club…

I remember a few years ago being in Marbella in January, at the same time as the Bundesliga winter break. There was a winter tournament going on and there were 500 Dortmund fans there !! All of them covered in black and yellow, and this was BEFORE Dortmund got heavily involved in the Champions League. They are mad.

  4. Cholo – isn’t Sammy suffering with Astma or something like that? – I’m sure there was some reason like that why Carver subbed him against Hull.

      (Quote)

  5. Sharples, Sammy is an asthmatic mate, or so I believe. Pity really, cos he’s a beautiful footballer with a cultured left foot with a great shot on him…
He has just zero consistency…you never know what you are going to get with him…

      (Quote)

  6. Munich – I really like the lad and I sincerely hope he gets a new contract with us. But I’m pleased Carver came out and told us about Sammys Astma coz he got a bit of stick for not putting it in for 90mins – at least that explains it.
The kid can still make a big contribution over a full season without doubt.

      (Quote)

  7. Sharples@382, ditto that mate. I also like Sammy, but he needs to up his consistency.
Maybe he just doesn’t have it in him, cos the EPL is a tough place to play ?
On current form probably good enough to be a squad player in a lower third EPL team. With the occasional start against the likes of Hull etc. Hopefully he can improve though ?..

I’ve said it since he took ownership. He has bought an institution and he has a responsibility to run the club to its full potential. He should sell up at the going rate, even if he makes a loss. It should be about morals when you buy a football club which means so much to its fans.

You’re right, he just doesn’t get it.

      (Quote)

  9. No doubt Begas will disagree but will only make a sarcastic remark and then scarper. These Australians seem to lack moral fibre. It must be the sun.

  10. It’s beyond me how anyone can be bothered by criticism from other bloggers when they don’t even know the individuals.

Some people need to get back bones. How they deal with life is worrying.

      (Quote)

  11. MM<379,Interesting stuff mate, got to say it made me a bit uncomfortable watching the way the fans were having a go like. Imagine if you screwed up at work and then had to face a baying mob lol, fair play to the players though for speaking to them, but what do you say when you've had a stinker.

      (Quote)

  12. Troy – I’m not sure it’s that people can’t deal with it, I just think some people can be bothered by it.
I mean this is an open forum where we can air views and offer opinions on our common love which is NUFC. In doing so (at times) they are hit with childish insults, naming calling and goading.

I reckon I can predict your response to this, but I’m putting it out there anyway.

      (Quote)

  13. Munich – I’ve said before that I think it’s important to have real quality widemen in the formation that we are playing at the moment. At the moment I can’t say that Sammy or Cabella are there, but both are heading the right way.
I know Aaron’s is getting rave reviews as well, but I can’t say we’ve seen enough of him yet either.

      (Quote)

  14. Former midfielder Joey Barton claimed this week that the hierarchy at St James’ Park had a say in picking the team, but Carver says that is untrue.

did he? never saw any of this…

Looking forward to the game/ Going for a 2-1 2-0 win.

  15. Troy: We obviously have more interesting lives and don’t hang around trolling football blogs all day and all night.

Your first question at 349 has 3 elements to it.

    1. Do I think Ashley is good for football?

Stupid question, so I’ll reformulate it for you. Do I think Ashley is good for Newcastle? I think he’s been average for Newcastle, no better and no worse than many other bosses we’ve had since Lord Westwood. I don’t think he’s been good for the club as far as the fans are concerned, but nor have newspapers and the internet and the plethora of keyboard warriors that have found a way to make a name for themselves – you should know about them.

    2. Is he only using NUFC as an advertising board for SD

No, he is doing other things as well. Certainly one of the things he is doing is promoting SD. He is also running a football club and trying to maintain a presence in the top half of an elite league. For what reason, I don’t know. I’m sure there’s some sense of challenge there for him. some sense of enjoyment at running a club, a bit of ego, perhaps. I don’t know. I have no idea how he thinks.

    3. Is he showing no interest in making NUFC the best it can be.

I think I could write an essay on this topic, but I’ll try and condense it. Certainly he isn’t doing what I would like him to do, but I can understand that he has a different perspective on all manner of things, and, unlike many others, who obviously have psychic powers well beyond us normal folk, I have no idea about how he thinks and what he thinks about. The term ‘best it can be’ is about opinion and perspective. Perhaps Ashley is, in his mind, doing the best he can possibly do given where he thinks the club is at in the greater scheme of things. Of course as a fan I think it can be the best in the world, any other thought surely is a mark of accepting mediocrity.

As far as the second question is concerned. Most football fans want the best for their club (inexplicably, some want their team relegated, but that’s another story) We use the term ‘football men’ as if that would solve all problems if one came along. Well, football men didn’t help Rangers first time round. And ask Leeds and Portsmouth and Coventry fans about football men. Many I’ve spoken to wish there’d been somebody with some business sense making decisions.

Sorry for not reading from your doomsday hymn book. I guess that means I’m not contributing to debate.

      (Quote)

  16. As far as a response to 387 is concerned here’s my view.

After being on this forum for many years and constantly giving opinions that do not toe the party line, giving frank and honest responses to comments that I think are based on half-baked facts, lies, hearsay, myth and mystical powers of mind-reading, I can say without a shadow of doubt that it’s easy to become exasperated with it all, especially when you are faced with trolls who prefer to make a caraicature of your views, probably because they can’t be arsed understanding anything that might hint at complexity.

Have a look at who has provided the new threads for the blog. In Oz’s case he is the one guy who has kept this blog ticking along. And he’s done this with good humour, and he has attempted to voice an opinion despite deliberate attempts to twist his words.

It’s not surprising that after all this time making sarcastic comments has become a strategy to voice an opposing stance. It often seems as if that is all that is left, because all rational argument has been buried under an avalanche of breast-beating and oneupmanship and blog-bombing and who-can-be-the-miserablest-fucka-under-Englands-dark-satanic-clouds, where the same comment is reformulated in umpteen different ways every day.

Think about that when you make comments about backbones. There’s certainly a right *** on this blog, but I think you should be looking at your ‘ally’ to find him. It certainly isn’t AMF.

      (Quote)

  17. Cant understand why we question if Sammy is PL material, he is doing a good season, and from what I remember, he is one of the players who stepped up for our first points of the season. And we missed him we he did not play. I this time he is a deserving starter

  18. BrisV: I think Pardew put many of us into a NUFC stupor. I genuinely didn’t like the guy even though I had never met the arrogant *****. I much happier now that he has been replaced by his ugly former lackey. I can’t really explain it, but I am more hopeful. I also hope AMF doesn’t ****** off. I thought his sarcasm was quite funny and certainly more entertaining than woo hoos and loads of Smiley’s. And yet the Troysta seems to have calmed down on that front in deference to congratulating Stuart on what a good job he is doing.

  20. Begas

Your loyalty to your fellow Aussie is admirable but misplaced.

Aussie constantly makes sarcastic remarks about Stuart ‘s opinions and views. He’s entitled to do so as is Stuart towards Aussie. It’s a forum where opinions differ and it’s part and parcel of participating on a blog.

We’ve all read the comment which made Aussie announce he was going to contribute less to the blog from now, but just a reminder, Stuart accused him of not contributing to any debate other than to make sarcastic comments, though acknowledged his contribution of the articles he published (sic).

I will stick to my comment which you take exception to and say it again. Aussie get a backbone and withdraw that incredibly huffy comment that you will not contribute to the blog because of Stuarts comment.

Begas, I said your loyalty was misplaced because just like you, Stuart, Aussie, me and everyone else, we all have the same thoughts, frustrations, dislikes and opinions about individuals on here. I reiterate, it’s a blog and that is expected. Get over it and show some gumption. I put up with the whining self pitying ninnies so others should or just clear off and go and sulk like Aussie.

I hope Aussie comes back. He is a good contributor. But comeback more resolute Aussie. 😉

  21. Good morning lads ..

I haven’t been on for quite some time now. What has happened to Toonsy, who used to run the blog?

There used to be a few others who pitched in with articles (myself included, but you probably don’t remember me, as it has been more than just a few months since then). I really enjoyed the articles Premandup wrote. Then there was the lass I believe was studying journalism (can’t remember her name, sorry). There was the guy with the indepth stats and a few more. Where are they these days?

I have always enjoyed this blog more than others, as the articles on here have not just been paraphrasing what we can all read in The Chronicle (no pun intended Ed Harrison), and the authors of the articles used to engage with the posters, which made for some interresting discussions ..

      (Quote)

  22. Sigh. You’ve missed the point again, Troy.

It’s not about getting huffy; it’s about the frustration of being constantly shouted down by boring, repetitive, unconstructive, blinkered opinions.

There comes a time when you just say aw, **** it!

  23. are we any closer to knowing who our next manager will be? have we identified him but we’re not disclosing?

I can’t believe we would hold interviews but decide against appointing now in view to starting in the Summer..

Or are we going to start this rigmarole all over again??

I honestly think something is going on in the background… not securing a manager / no players signed / players released, sold / 5 going to Rangers to help their promotion… Is Ashley ready to leave?

  24. Please come back Aussie 😀 Stu was wrong to say you don’t contribute and he should apologise, don’t let it bother you, youre made of stronger stuff.. 😉

  25. Funkness@400, great to see you back on. The lass you are on about is Zoe, not been on in ages now. Her last post was quite down if I remember. She was very down about the Toon and where it was heading and ready to give up on it all. A few of us tried to tell her that in time things will be different again as he won’t be here for ever but the club and fans will. Would love to know how her journo course is going, hope one day she comes back on with an update and maybe an article 😉
Ice and a few others were saying the other day that a lot have stopped posting which is a real shame. No idea what’s happened with Toonsy, busy with work and family probably,or maybe fed up with not much positive to write about these days. If you look at Eds blog which has lots of new articles, they are mostly comments on stuff printed in the local rag.

  26. Begas

Thank you for reformulating my stupid question for me. 😆

    YCMIU.

No Begas, that was my reasonable question that didn’t need reformulating. 🙄

Begas, just like you get bored and frustrated by me and others on here. I will say it again. I find you and many others just as tedious and frustrating. But I just get on with it. I honestly find Aussie’s reaction the worst kind of of behaviour. Self pity is an ugly trait.

I hope for the sake of his backbone he finds it. I’m sure he’ll appreciate your shoulder. He seems to like that.

I like Aussie in general. I just don’t like that side to him.

Good luck to Ice. He needs to find a forum which only has happy smiley people who don’t bicker. There’s no such forum but let him keep looking.

People come and go all the time for many different reasons. Let them go and wish them well. Stardust left because of people like Ice whining on all the time. That’s life.

It’s a great blog and just get on with it.

Can you really see further than Carver if he does a decent job til the end of the season. He will again have the lowest paid manager in the league and Carver will bite his hand off to be given that chance.

      (Quote)

  29. First of all I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more lilly livered, hairy fairy sit on the fence and middle of the road answer to a set of questions in my life! Bris, you might as well as not answered Troy’s questions about Ashley because nobody is any wiser as to what you really think. Truly staggered by them views…

Secondly I am already tired of hearing Carver consistently tow the party line. First he’s says he wants nothing to do with transfers as he thinks it will get him the job and now he says we didn’t need any players in January because our squad is good enough. What’s changed since the summer when we supposedly tried to sign a striker and a centre half? Well apart from losing 2 centre halves and finding out one of our strikers isn’t particularly been very good this season.

If we wanted to look seriously at making a push for Europe we would have added them two players we needed and give it a go, but mid table is enough for us and that’s what really frustrates me.

In my opinion Carver is weak as **** and that will filter down to the players and they won’t have the kind of respect that is needed to be the main man at a club.

It’s not about getting huffy; it’s about the frustration of being constantly shouted down by boring, repetitive, unconstructive comments. Do you not believe Stuart feels that about Aussie?

  31. Sorry Stuart. I know you don’t need me to defend your corner but you weren’t on and Begas was attacking you.

You’re right about his answer. It answers nothing. He won’t see that though. It’s the same old Begas.

  33. Thanks for the warm welcome Kimtoon.

Zoe, that’s right. I remember she put in quite some effort at one point. Sad that she got discouraged by the misery – I don’t blame her, though.

I visit Ed’s blog now and again, but I must say, that even though I do appreciate the effort he puts into it, giving fans a place to gather for a discussion, he has something really pretentious and annoying about him.
He wants to be regarded as one of us, the fans, but insists on referring to himself as Dr. Ed Harrison. I would suggest that on a fans forum it holds very little relevance whether you are a doctor, a bus driver or if you are unemployed. The second we step inside the ground, we put on our shirt or just meet for a chat about Newcastle, social status really has no place at all.
He also insists on writing ‘we’, even though he is really just expressing his personal views. It’s a pompous and pretentious way to give your views a bit of extra weight, but it’s so obvious, that it just looks quite pathetic to be honest.

What used to put this blog head and shoulders above the rest, was that every author on here, even if commenting on news gathered from the media, put some effort into making their own interpretations and afterwards engaging actively in the discussion with other posters. I used to get a real buzz, and was always looking forward to dropping by during a lunch break or after work.

How do we get back to that?

Should we try to assemble the old writers gang, and give it a go? I couldn’t find the time to write an article on a daily basis, but I will gladly contribute here and there, if a few of you guys would be up to pitching in as well.

Aussie – how do I get in touch with you in regards to sending you a draft for an article?

Premandup – where are you, mate?

Troy – judging by the length of some of your comments, you could easily put together article. Would you care to give it a go? I am sure they would start a discussion 😉

  38. Hey up. Only a quick one. I used to write a lot but the last few I submitted just sat in the queue ignored for days until they were irrelevent, so I started posting articles in places like the Mag. Got bored of that because I enjoyed the posts from the crew on site really – so don’t write at all anymore and very rarely look at any blog because the board have laid their cards on the table and we as a club will not be something to get excited about for a while. Hence, nothing particularly positive to discuss.

Plus I’m quite busy these days. See you from time to time no doubt. 🙂

  46. Eric, yeah saw that. In one breath he says, I told you he wasn’t going anywhere, then says he’s like a new signing, which you can only conclude means he expected to lose him 😕

  47. KIM Ime hoping our m/f players track back the way they should to cut out much of what you say which is a worry, its the high balls they will pump into us ax I have no faith in the defence,I hope Drummit is in the middle ax Colo is slowly losing it IMO,here’s hoping mate,by the way I think Carver will go with Riv up front with cissie coming on later he just seems to be pushing Riv lately

  48. Funkness and Shamrock, great to see you’s both back on the Blog. It would be brilliant if you could pop back more often, I for one would really appreciate reading your input.
The same goes for the old bloggers too, there are loads of them about, I’m sure they haven’t given up blogging as such, maybe they have moved on elsewhere, have been driven into despair by happenings at NUFC. Or have maybe given up on the at times inane childish *** for tat arguments which occur here now and then ?
Needless to say, having looked elsewhere, when the blog builds up a head of steam, and the crack gets going, I would say this is by far the best blog going. It would be great to get the old crack back going again… It’s a real pity that Toonsy doesn’t get on as much as he did…Richietoon, Solano, Geordie Deb, Dubai Toon, etc etc we know you are out there …come back and show yourselves !!…

Ditto that with writing articles too, it’s a real pity if articles are written then end up in a waiting list as such due to the fact that Toonsy or whoever is running the blog doesn’t have the time to react as such.

  49. Johnny Carver is a west end lad who loves the toon. He is in the unenviable position of managing NUFC, think about it all !! Amazing !
At the same time Ashley knows exactly what is up, JC you look after the team, you know you’re place in the big scheme of things, do as you’re told and I’ll look after the spondoolicks.

JC would do the job for nowt, of that I’m sure…
He knows his place, and has been given the same task as Pardew of addressing the media. He served for 4 years under Pardew so has learned from the best. It stands to reason that despite him claiming to be his own man, media wise at least he will roll out the same sound bites as Pardew. He is naturally absolutely ecstatic about having the job, he also needs to think a bit about self-preservation, it makes no sense to rock the boat, so will come out in support of the club.
I’m curious to see how robust he is and how he stands up to a relegation battle, should things head in that direction…?
One thing Ashley is is supportive, as shown by his support for AP over the years, whether he would show the same support for JC if his investment was being threatened …? . I could see JC being demoted, but removed from the club, as long as Ashley has a hand in the club ..never.. At the end of the day there aren’t that many football-minded Geordies to go round. Ashley had a try with Shearer and Keegan… who else is left out there ? 🙂
The back-room and coaching staff is filled with Geordies too 🙂

  50. Icedog, Stoke will be a tough nut to crack, that’s for sure. If we want to establish ourselves as a top 10 club we should be beating Stoke at home though… Big test on Sunday for JC and the whole club.

  51. STUART,what’s up lad? I used to enjoy your views and liked the way you stuck to them which normally won out,I didn’t always agree with some of them but its your view so that’s fine, but lately you seem a little aggressive and the odd insult, maybe its the things NOT going at the toon that’s getting your goat but that’s was never you,Ime not for one minute having a go at you just it would be nice to have the old stu back, its just my thoughts like

  52. MM this game will be real tough imo, Mark//H trys to manage the game the way he used to play it (rough). which won’t work against the better class teams over a season but should always keep them a mid table team but against teams like the toon at the moment and teams like us they are a bloody tough cookie to crack

  53. To be honest, Ice I’m totally pissed off with what’s happneing at NUFC. But also just as pissed off about people who try and defend it.

You changed my question. I asked whether Ashley was good for football. You decided that it was stupid and answered whether he was good for newcastle. We all know the answer to that. FTSOTB. 🙄

I asked you whether you understood the Rangers fans stance. Did you really answer that question? You said football men hadn’t done Rangers must good in the past. You’ve basically criticised Ashley for the way he’s running our club but don’t really explain why rangers fans are wrong for fighting Ashleys takeover.

I’m all up for debate but you really need to take a look at your responses before criticising others for not taking your points of view seriously.

  55. MM – agree with that. I’m expecting them to nearly park the bus and try to hit us on the break which they were doing very effectively last season and took the lead. They were the best team until the 2 sendings off.
I’m thinking it’ll be a bit like Southampton but hoping for the win. Hope Shawcross is out!

Lot of blogging about blogging going on. Aussie seems to have taken the huff big style. I’m hoping he’ll return, corks swinging and as sarcastic as ever. If he doesn’t the blog might just die.

  56. I dont think we should read to much into Aussie not being on,I’ve lived there a couple of time and know you can go walk-about for a few days or even just go see a mate or family its a days drive there have a day or two then another days drive back diff live stile than here so imo nowt to fret about

  57. Troy – To shorten Bris’ very long (non) answers he said Ashley wasn’t doing what he wanted him to do and was an average owner. How do you debate from there? So little meat in the bone that a vegetarian could have a naw on it!

  58. MM Ashley is impossible to fathom. He dumped Fat Sam and Hughton and then pretty much constructively dismissed the legends Keegan an Shearer. Then he sticks with Pardew in the Summer when just about any other owner would have dismissed him. Some of these megalomaniacs are not like us. Look at Chelsea sacking Mourinho and Ancelotti FFS.

I have no idea what Fatty’s plans are. Hopefully they have a plan 🙂 they didn’t seem to have one when Palace came in for the Gobshite.

  59. STUART I hate what’s going on at the toon and as I’ve said I gave up my season ticket a while back in disgust and will never go back until jabba gets out which Ime afraid will be many years unless he takes sick,I get upset at how many fans go to games and sit on his roundabout,to get him out stay away but Ime afraid it will not happen how easy some people will throw their money away with no return beats me,the worlds gone mad in the toon anyway

      (Quote)

  60. For me, without regular articles the blog will always suffer. Yes you’ll get ninnies who don’t like some bloggers and whine on or stay away. Those people are never happy though and their non appearances don’t go missed by me.

Until the articles get more regular then many will stay away, often cos they can’t access it on their mobiles because of too many posts.

Toonsy needs to sort his act out. 😛

      (Quote)

  61. I really don’t think jabba has a long term plan,I had a friend that used to work there not now Ime afraid, they told things change by the hour with jabba without anyone knowing at times what the hell is going on so we fans have no chance which there have been twice lately we fans know of,the first when big AL was told the job was his 100% on a Friday on the Monday before turningup was told CH had the job and lately that French guy on TV said he could be a PL manager this week next we know Carver has the job,so as I say what chance have the fans got when the owner works by the hour on what’s next

      (Quote)

  62. Much better, Troy. Much better. At least you are seeking clarification (not that I’m convinced you are serious about wanting an answer). I do note that you say I said something about Ashley – you should point that out to your mate.

Ok lets assume that it’s a valid question-Is he good for football? I think the answer is basically the same as the one I gave. He is no better and no worse than many other businessmen.

As for Rangers fans. I never actually said they were wrong for protesting I said “I don’t know why Rangers fans would be pissed off by Ashley in particular; they must have plenty of other people to blame for their situation.”

I think all that was adequately covered in my response.

Now maybe you can tell me why waiting for a football man to take over is a good thing if you haven’t got a penny to rub together to bring players in. It might be a long wait. I’d have thought they’d be in a hurry to get back to the top.

  63. Right. That’s me outta here as well. Don’t post often but have read most days since this blog split off Workyticket’s site. Negativity is fine but when miserable sods start forcing their opinion on others they are simply bullies. I just don’t enjoy being in the audience watching bullies at work.

May check in again in a while. Hope Stuart starts playing nice and stops hurling insults about (especially to those that post articles!) and the less said about Troy the better.

Good luck to those that remain and Howay the lads!

      (Quote)

  64. I really cannot stand the way jabba is running the club but when it come to footy tell me a owner or chairman that knows anything about football I don’t know of many they are in it for their own reasons and not for their knowledge of the game anyway
