  1. Stu:
    Fair point.
Did we not have a full quota squad though? I keep reading conflicting reports on that matter.
Still feel quality is not there regardless.
    CB’s obviously severely under-staffed.

  2. We made room when we got rid of HBA, Mbiwa and Santon.

Quality is obviously important but if we replaced a cisse with Austin, Sissoko with Wijmaldum and let’s say Williamson for Matip we would have a much better first team but if they got injured which is likely through the season we’d be in the same position.

  3. At least most of the players we are supposedly after are of a decent quality. Of course that needs be turned into actual signings.
Read somewhere that allegedly the press have been tipped of to be at training ground tomorrow? Hopefully Wijnaldum if true.

  4. LS I think Rogers made some bad buys last season and lucky to keep his job he spent a fortune, some good players but not for PL,Spurs did the same spent all that Bale money on players not good enough,L/Pool will get a fair bit back when they sell Sterling another over rated player imo

  5. PSV have a friendly today and Wijnaldum isn’t playing. Make of that what you will…

  6. Stu, that’s kind of my point. Regardless of who comes in as replacements for our first team players, those waiting in the wings need to be better in my opinion. If we have places to fill then obviously they need filling, but we need to be better equipped as well as more heavily.

  7. Otherwise our prophesied charge to the CL and Cup glory might just not come true. 😉

  8. STUART@445 maybe puts a bit more weight to booked medicals next week, strange VAN/G isn’t looking at him he knows him well,as there’s talk he might move for Cabaye

  9. If Sissoko wants to leave then let him. However, his inconsistencies might have had something to do with coaching, him not having a settled position, and us not having a centre forward for most of the year as an outlet for his final ball? At his best, he turned defense into attack very quickly and could run at speed with the ball without being tackled.

Why can’t we turn over a new leaf and have some competition for places and buy without having to sell?

I would be surprised if Liverpool are after him as I am pretty sure they must have promised Milner a shot at central midfield to get him.

  10. Ice:
Austin also failed at Hull not too long back.
As long as he passes now, I’d not lose too much sleep over it

      (Quote)

  11. Having said that…..

Bruce:”It is a blow for him and it’s a blow for us. These medicals are so stringent, things have progressed with scans and all the rest of it and he has got a problem.”

Hopefully a past problem, not an ongoing one.

  12. Wonder what Ash might decide if he thinks he can get Mitrovic for 5m less than Austin.
Would love to see some genuine ambition and go for them both.
He definitely looks an exciting prospect at only 20.

  13. Eric@461.
Bad coaching and lack of definitive position could easily account for his inconsistency in form.
Not, however, for his questionable attitude.

  14. Daily mail reporter for NUFC saying Austin deal still on but we’re reluctant to go above £12m and worries over a shoulder injury?

  15. YOU YEW
<<<<<<<<<<<<< thinks we will go for both meself, that dost fee is just way above what hes worth at 30 million (laughable ) so dont think dost will be on the hitlist any more

      (Quote)

  16. Well, with Bournemouth allegedly bidding 14m that would be a proverbial spanner.
Did 12m not already get rejected from the Foxes anyway?

  17. Earlier this summer Wijnaldum admitted he had spoken with Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul on life in England.

He told Sky Sports, “I speak with Leroy Fer and Tim Krul about England a lot. Tim has been in England since he was 17. He only says good things about England and living in Newcastle.

“The stadium is big with 50,000 people, the fans are great and life is great there.

“You have better players and teams in England, and for myself it is better to play in a better league against better players.”

Wijnaldum has a contract at PSV until 2018, and the club are holding out for a €15 million fee, with Russian side Zenit st Petersburg having a €10 million bid rejected earlier this summer.

  18. dost is just to much of a gamble for 30 million if he flops ya wont get anywere near what ya paid for him

      (Quote)

  19. Will be nice to get a striker or two in,but would like some movement getting a couple of good defenders in we were **** at defending last season

      (Quote)

  20. TAE: I am not sure Wolfsburg said they rated Dost as 30 mil. I think they said if Fermino costs 29 mil then Dost is being undervalued at 10 or whatever. However, he really has only had a great half season and I think they just picked up another striker. It has all gone quiet though. I don’t know why they would sell to Dortmund, one of their main rivals for a CL spot so we may still have a chance. I also don’t know why they would sell at all unless Dost is unhappy with his potential playing time as 3rd or 4th choice.

I am of the opinion the more good players we get in and keep the better. We have the money.

  21. KIM the way I look at it is it didn’t matter how many we scored last season(not a lot) we knew the defence would ship goals like water so lets try and fix it first just imo like

  22. <<<<< might go to 12 million for him but anything more than thats a huge gamble

  23. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< is not saying he will flop mind but it has to be added to the scales were a big fees concerned

  24. ERIC SYKES
if the fee is anywere near 30 million im sure ya smart enough to see thats way to much

  25. Yeah. @ Ice 454 agree, do think there is going to be a bit of negativity swirling around others this season. Trouble is for Spurs and Liverpool they have come to see CL as their targets and going to be tricky to get it, which could lead to some negative fan reactions. Plus, could be time for Southampton and Swansea to fall away a little, Southampton surely can’t keep selling players and progressing, and Monk’s second season may well not go so well. West Ham, maybe could do better, but if we can get our heads down early and do the right things, could at least put us in the mix with others whose expectations may start to be dashed, making things look better here.

I have been happily patient so far, think we are now reaching action territory, want to see over the coming week that my optimism was not misplaced and we start to get down to business.

  26. latest on Mitrovic

The 20-year-old Anderlecht striker, who plays his international football for Serbia, told Gazzetta dello Sport: “I received an offer from Roma. I’ve also been shown strong interest by Benfica.

“Soon I’ll let my decision be known. Roma are a strong, excellent team. I know Rudi Garcia and he’s a great coach.”

  29. TAE, True, but I think it’s obvious Benfica his first choice, well according to his dad it is.

  30. Ps. I am not saying we will be challenging Liverpool and spurs, by the way, just that the negativity may not be swirling around us so much this season.

      (Quote)

  31. TAE: transfer values always seem to be cat and mouse. You don’t suddenly jump from being a 10mil pound player to 30mil, unless you are Raheem Sterling and it is just silly. You are right though, I am reading between the lines of what Wolfsburg said – my guess is 15 mil Euros would get him, only my guess though.

  32. KImtoon: can Benfica pay Mitrovic what we could pay him? I know it is CL but he is only 20 and has time.

  35. The strong Austin and Wijnaldum links are really good timing with the fans forum tomorrow mind 😉

      (Quote)

  36. Honestly Kim, I got half way through writing a post earlier about the FF timing, and decided against posting it for some reason. Trying to be positive and surpressing cynicism perhaps. Seemed there was a little more positivity about the place since late last night.
Still, who’s to say that one sky sports report is true against all the others?
No actual quotes from a psv official I noticed

They’re both attacking mids so perhaps a similar role?
Not sure, although I know he’s also been utilised on the wing in the past.
2 for the price of 1?
Sounds like something I’ve seen in a certain high st sports retailer.

  38. In fact, makes sense as a Sissoko replacement. A CM to be used largely out on the wing 🙄

  39. You yew, all very odd but generally if sky say it, it’s likely true. Ryder reckons we’re in advanced talks 😕 😕 someone’s been sold a dud line though.

      (Quote)

  40. Toon don’t like talks etc to be made public, maybe PSV are just trying a bit of damage limitation if the leak came from there side?…or it that just a bit of hopeful theory creating 😛
TBF sky “sources” are often as bad as the rest of the media

  41. KIM @506 please tell me when we ever get the truth from the toon or the rags all bloody smoke and mirrors you get fed up with it

      (Quote)

  42. I’d have thought it was in PSV’s interest for people to know a deal is imminent as it will make any other potentially interested party pull their finger out and submit a counter bid before it was too late

      (Quote)

  43. What time is the FF tomorrow?
Enough time to pull something out the bag?
Any more info on the supposed tip off for press to be at the training ground tomorrow?

  47. RICHIE that’s friends for you,it was me that payed off your slate at your old club, was sick of seeing your name behind the bar in four foot letters, mind I payed with a iou 😆

      (Quote)

  48. Aye richie, but then plenty of local journos, not to mention nationals, seem to have it on decent authority that it’s a done deal. In which case the club are doing a shocking job of what they are demanding of others.
Why the tip off if it’s such a secret?
Cuckoo land is about right. You just can’t second guess this lot, or make much sense of what no longer needs guessing.
Proper turnip twisters the lot of them.

      (Quote)

  49. You yew , who knows mate, I think Austin has had about 3 done deals so far, like I say all **** until it isn’t.

    Ice… 😆 I’ve got a suitcase full of your IOU’s 😡

      (Quote)

  50. On a brighter note, if the deal happens then it’ll be a most welcome occasion when the club will deserve a tipped hat for pulling off a good deal for a good player at the going rate. Especially if he turned down that lot down the road for the privilege.
Hopefully will be the impetus to kick on.
Maybe Austin wants to see a bit of ambition before committing?

      (Quote)

  51. Ice.
I wonder if maybe the Dost deal was pretty close until that other lad moved for 30m and then Wolfsburg tried to move the goal posts?
I know I’ve walked away from things when that has happened to me.
    As usual, who knows?
    Richie.
Yep, Austin has been odds on for 3 different clubs, not including the supposed interest from Chelsea and the supposed 14m from Bournemouth.’
We’ve gone from ‘favourites’ to ‘done deal’ to ‘won’t leave london’ and now back to ‘favourites’.

  52. Basically a Dutch reporter claiming that no contact had been made at all between NUFC and PSV regarding Wijnaldum.
Only been up a couple hrs at most, now removed.
    Something fishy going on here……

  53. Wijnaldum can play anywhere in midfield And is just as good out wide as Central . Truly the lad is class their no flauws in his game hè is strong athletic has pace And technical ability . really hope this one happens would go a long wat too improving our creative problems
