Sky Germany: Newcastle join race to sign €12m South American after Bundesliga move stalls

According to Sky Germany, Newcastle United are showing interest in Uruguayan striker Maxi Gomez.

Florian Plettenberg – a senior reporter at Sky Sport DE – claims that the 26-year-old ‘wants to leave’ Valencia and has been in talks to join Borussia Monchengladbach.

However, the Bundesliga side still haven’t stumped up the cash to pay his €12m asking price, leaving the door open for other interested club.

With this in mind, Sky Germany add that Newcastle, Everton and Fenerbahce are also keen on the powerful South American, handing us another new name to be linked with a late move to St James’ Park.

The 6ft 1′ Uruguay international has racked up 27 caps for his country, bagging 52 goals and 21 assists in 165 La Liga appearances.

Gomez had a few injury issues last season, scored just five goals as a result, and is also entering the penultimate year of his contract at the Mestalla – which may explain why he’s available for just over £10m.

  1. Aye – we’ll pay the money.
    Oh, hang on we wont.
We’ll do 4 million up front and the rest over 3 years.
If we did that with Pope, why on earth would we expect the club to pay 12 million all in one go?
