Hugo Ekitike’s move to PSG goes from bad to worse after Newcastle United snub

After agreeing a fee with Hugo Ekitike over the summer, one of the most tedious transfer saga then played out as the Frenchman stalled on a move to St James’ Park before signing for PSG instead.

In some respects, you can see why a move to France’s biggest club appealed, but many wondered where the game time would come with Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar all streets ahead of him in the PSG pecking order.

So far, he’s been forced to warm the bench, failing to start in any of their 11 games this season in all competitions until he was handed a rare opportunity to impress from the off in Saturday’s clash with Nice.

Sadly for Ekitike, his first start since signing for the club in July did not go to plan. He was not only criticised by the French press, with one outlet (GGFN) giving him a 4/10 in their player ratings piece, but was hooked before the hour mark after failing to muster a single shot or touch in the opposition penalty box.

He’s clearly a big talent, as Newcastle believed they had beaten a host of European giants to his signature at one point over the summer, however you have to question the player’s representatives, who were clearly looking for the ‘bigger’ move and greater payday, not the most suitable step in his career after just one year of senior football at Reims.

In the end, it may have been for the best from our perspective, with Ekitike’s second snub in the space of six months leading us to Alexander Isak; one of Europe’s most exciting young strikers.

I wish Ekitike all the best, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s looking for a loan move before long in search of some much needed game time…

  1. How can he be looking for a loan from PSG when he’s only on loan at PSG for a season with a view to buy.. Move on from him or at least check your facts before publishing an article..
