Gareth Southgate responds to Elliot Anderson rumours as TWO Mags consider switch

Last week, The Telegraph revealed that England are hoping to see Elliot Anderson switch allegiances after he was forced to pull out of the Scotland squad with a knock.

Following the Three Lions’ underwhelming 1-1 draw with Ukraine, Gareth Southgate has been asked about the Toon talent, confirming that he’s been keeping tabs on the 20-year-old who is “definitely a player we like.” Asked about the links, he said:

“We liked him and we do like him, we think he’s a player that’s doing really well,. He was called into their (Scotland’s) squad earlier in the week and I don’t know what the position is at the moment.

“I saw he’s pulled out. Let’s see, that’s something that John (McDermott, FA technical director) and others at our organisation will be picking up. He’s definitely a player we like.

Anderson’s hopes of regular minutes may be greater with Scotland, as things stand, but the Whitley Bay-born midfielder has a big decision to make.

Another Mag considering an international switch is Harvey Barnes. The Times claim he could move in the opposite direction to Anderson, as he qualifies for Scotland through both of his grandparents.

The 25-year-old hasn’t been capped by England in almost three years, with his one and only appearance being a 14-minute cameo against Wales in October 2020.
