Paul Merson makes Newcastle prediction after “big blow” for Arsenal

Paul Merson believes Newcastle United will “get destroyed” at Arsenal on Saturday night if they allow for another open game.

In his latest prediction piece, he’s backed the Gunners to come away 3-1 winners this weekend, despite a “big blow” last night as Porto scored in the 94th minute to win their Champions League first leg 1-0 in Portugal.

Mikel Arteta’s side failed to muster a single shot on target in Porto, but they’ve scored 11 goals in their last two Premier League games, beating Burnley 5-0 after a 6-0 victory at West Ham the previous week.

Merson thinks we are “conceding far too many goals” to contain Arsenal and thinks the game will “get messy” for Eddie Howe if we don’t tighten up, fearing Bukayo Saka could have a field day against Dan Burn.

Speaking to Sportskeeda, Merson had this to say:

“Arsenal suffered a big blow last night. They last won a European trophy 30 years ago. It just shows you how hard European competitions really are – you need the experience. They had a lot of the ball away from home, but they didn’t really know what to do with it. I’m not sure why they changed the away-goals rule – you’re now going to get games like this because teams will go into a shell in their away matches.
